We cruised the Allure on the 2/15 sailing.

It's been a few years since we sailed with RC and we thought the quality of the food was not nearly as good as it has been in the past. We heard this comment from others as well. We didn't starve, mind you! Breakfast in the MDR was our favorite every day. And lunch in the Park Cafe was always good.

The activities and shows were very good as usual.

My biggest complaint on this sailing was a VERY large group of Brazilians that were onboard. I know this is not a complaint against RC. These people were the rudest people I have ever met in my life. We heard this from MANY other passengers as well. I played in a poker tournament one day and they wouldn't stop speaking portuguese to each other. The pit boss and dealer warned them well over 10 times and they wouldn't follow the rules. I suppose he could have tossed them but there were like 20 of them around the table and who knows what they would have done. There were several instances where they were scary rude. If you said excuse me if they were in your way, they would completely ignore you. They cut in lines. They completely took over On Air for every karaoke night singing spanish songs, there was no room for anyone else. I know everyone has a right to vacation when and where and there is nothing RC could have done about this. I am in no way saying that all Brazilians are like this either but this group for the most part was not well behaved and their rudeness was unbelievable.

There were loads of kids on this cruise. It was to be expected with it being school vacation week. One of the crew told us there were over 1000 kids onboard and he had never seen such bratty kids on a cruise. They were running up and down hallways, being rude in the pools and hottubs, playing in the stairwells and elevators, etc. *sigh*... the usual complaints. I will never understand parents who let their kids loose on cruiseships. I personally witnessed 2 young boys, about 10 and 8 I'd say, around 10pm one night call their parents over the walkie talkies. The kid called his dad and when his dad answered he asked if his dad was still up and could they go in the pool in their clothes instead of going back to the room to change. So basically, these parents had gone to bed and their little darlings were out roaming the ship. BTW, the dad said yes so these 2 went off to get in the pool in their clothes. Unreal.

The employees on the ship were wonderful as usual. Always friendly and helpful.

There is possibly still a small issue with noro onboard. We received a survey the last day saying there were some sick passengers and had anyone in our stateroom been sick. We didnt witness anyone sick all week.

I would still sail her again. I love the Allure. We had a great time and it was so good to get away from the cold here in New England.

I think RCCL should let customers/travel agents know when big groups are on your sailing, and give you an option to change ships/dates.

Our Liberty of the Seas sailing had a large "Zen" group on board. They had priority seating in the main dining room,by the bottom of the stairs. They interfered with the waiters/Chefs presentation that they gave up mid performance. So disgusted!

I even requested in advance, to be seated at the bottom of the stairs so we could enjoy the performance, I got a reply back from RC dining, the large group had priority, but we would be able to be seated on the balcony over-looking the stairs. We were stuck in a corner table no where near the stairs.

Also, the Zen group took over lounges and other venues that were closed to us.

Of course we didn't let the Zens ruin our vacation.

We didn't give out our WOW card, because we were not WOWed at all.

Come on now RCCL- just let us know when Large groups are on board. it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the review. We will be sailing Allure for the first time in a couple of weeks. Glad to here less presence of noro. I am very thorough with washing hands and not touching public handles etc and try very hard for my family to do the same. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same. I was quite nervous to hear about the noro issues from recent past passengers.

When you mentioned about the large group, I immediately thought about the tour groups that people complain about at Disney. We've vacationed at Disney frequently for the past 15 yrs and have seen all types of groups. But these groups received the most complaints on forums. All were quite loud, rude and had no respect for the rules but they were all teenagers with a few tour guides. Most of the guides did not handle them properly and some were even worse than the kids. These groups always during certain times of the year so we tried to avoid those times. However, I can only imagine how much worse they would be when they're all in the same ship. It's much easier to avoid them in a large area like WDW. I would hate to see them in one ship.

I've often wondered if these groups would be better behaved if their parents were around...I guess I got my answer from your experience.

I agree that everyone has a right to vacation, but they should know how to behave because everyone else has a right to enjoy their vacation without having to deal with their rude behaviour. I wish that the crew had done something so they know this is not acceptable behaviour. Some cultures are very different.

Despite all that, I hope you enjoyed your cruise. :)

I'm sorry to hear you had such a frustrating cruise in terms of passengers. It's annoying when people are so rude and inconsiderate of others. Hope you could still enjoy the tournament.

AS for kids...what holiday is in February? (Maybe I'm confused since I'm from Canada. Universities do have reading week, but these would be older kids who should be closer to adults). I'm shocked too at kids that young running around. Our son will be 10.5 when we cruise and there's no way we'd let him roam on his own. We'll take him to the kids club if he'd like but we'll get him when done. And swimming in clothes (never mind that the parents aren't around). Yikes.

Sounds like outside of these, you enjoyed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

There are many cultures in which some of their behavior would be considered very rude to Americans (ex. cutting in line, bumping into people, being late, no consideration for being on time, etc.). The Brazilians and many other South American/Latin American cultures fall in this category. It is funny to me that when Brazilian's come to America they clearly either make no attempt to understand and abide by our culture or they just simply don't care (you see this at Disney big time for Brazilians). This is funny because Americans are often criticized for being ethnocentric and not learning other cultures.

I'm in sympathy with your entire post, but I've only seen behavior like that at Disneyworld. Not being a gambler, I assuming there are rules about players speaking with each other and the dealer (or others not knowing Portuguese) couldn't tell if they were blatantly cheating. Do I have that right?

If may not seem fair to them, but I'm guessing from what I have seen, a little casual conversation between players isn't too frowned on if its clear its not cheating, but here there was no way to tell. I've seen many times a royal crew member will advise people of rules and not push too far if lives weren't in danger, but the casino's seem to much harder enforcers of rules.

I think it is important for RC to be made aware of large groups and their unacceptable behavior. RC can then go back to the tour group leaders and let them know that there were many complaints about the group. I am not just referring to this Brazilian group but to all large groups that seem to take over the ship.

Maybe there should be an official code of conduct that each cruiser must sign.

I know I am dreaming. RC and other cruiselines will never do anything to offend paying customers.

You are correct, every casino in America and "American" cruise ships have a very strict "English only at the table" rule. In Vegas you will typically get one warning and then be thrown out of the Poker room (without refund if it is a tournament). I would be livid as a poker player in that situation, as there is No excuse for not enforcing the rules. Those on-ship tournaments are not cheap to enter, and with a free cruise on the line I would a not stand for possible collusion and/or blatant violations of the rules.

We too have experienced the Brazil cruise crush in January/February before. There are nationalities on the Oasis class ships from all over the world. It is the Brazil group that sticks out for all the reasons stated in this thread. I think they are not going out of the way to be rude, it is just the same way that they would be at home. I do have friends in the cattle business that come to Canada ever year and we spend time together. They are appreciate the friendship as well as the time we spend together. They come as a group of 4-8 and spend a month here. Perhaps since they are not in a pack mantality they act differently than what I have experienced on the ship. We have chatted about many topics before, so I will have to ask them this fall if my theory is correct.

This is not a large organized tour group from Brazil. These are just families on their summer school break. RC has salsa dancing the the Royal Prominade and it really is fun to watch the adaults and kids dancing away. When we sail on Allure in 2 weeks the Brazilian summer holidays will have ended and it will be over run with north american kids, like mine. The salsa dancing everynight will be wrapped up, and it will be back to the steel drum band.

The ship is so large it brings folks from around the world. With that we get to experience a cultural tour, of good and bad traits and behaviour.

LuCruise, in the northeast our schools have a week off in February and another in April. Most states just have one week in March.

Thanks for the info. Had no idea as I'm just used to our holidays at Christmas, March break and then summer....plus any statutory holidays like Easter Friday and Monday.

I was on this same cruise and have to agree 100%. It was Carnival in Brazil which is a big holiday for them and why so many people were on vacation. And the number of children on this cruise was insane! I do think Royal Caribbean has some responsibility on this issue. We experienced children in bars even in Vintages which is supposed to be a quiet oasis for wine drinkers. Only once did I see a crew member politely tell children who were running through the dining room to stop running. They have policies on rowdy passengers they just don't seem to want to address them. They definitely need to make bar areas child free. Maybe they could post elevator etiquette in the daily news letter and on the TV and skip some of the redundent shopping news!!!!!!

HI,

We sailed on this cruise as well. I'm kind of mixed about this. On the one hand, the Brazilians gave the ship a totally different vibe. I heard there were over 2000 onboard. It was festive and loud and clearly a party atmosphere. I heard more Portuguese than English. Also, Romero Britto was onboard. With that being said, yes, there were rude people. I was leaving the windjammer with a plate of food and a group of 3 women bumped into me, and I almost spilled my food. They just laughed. No sorry or excuse me..not even in Portuguese. I am sure this can happen anywhere with anyone. Yes, at times I was annoyed, but I think we just decided we were on vacation and to just go with the flow;)

Also, the Diamond Lounge was empty every night!

We sailed the Oasis in January and encountered the same issues -- kids eating and melting ice cream on the steps of the hot tub, kids using the hot tubs as swimming pool and diving into it, and the general habit of ignoring excuse me altogether. The captain actually had to turn back to FLL because of a child near-drowning in a wave pool. I don't know whether that was due to negligence of the parents, but we noticed that the Brazilian passengers were much more lenient with their kids than I ever was with my kids. The attendants tried to keep the solarium kid-free. We had a great time as always but also noted that we had never encountered ruder passenger on any ship before.

Ah, Carnivale! Now I know what week NEVER to book a cruise! Found online:

The actual annual dates of Carnival differ and depend on when it is Easter in that particular year. Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon in Spring. Usually the entire event lasts from Thursday before until Tuesday after, local customs reserved.

According to this, in the years to come Carnaval Sunday will be on the following dates:

2015 : 15th of February

2016 : 7th of February

2017 : 26th of February

2018 : 11th of February

2019 : 3rd of March

2020 : 23rd of February

You're welcome! ;)

I wasn't on this cruise, and I do sympathise if the behaviour was so dreadful, but I really do think that RCI have to take responsibility for dealing with unruly behaviour. I have seen unruly and unacceptable behaviour on one or two cruises (thankfully not many), and I think the cruise line need to do a lot more to police this kind of thing.

Regarding different languages and cultures, as frequent cruisers in Europe, we are accustomed to cruising with people who don't speak our language and have different customs and levels of courtesy and manners. It's just life I suppose, but I wasn't aware of the "English only" rule at poker tables (I'm not a player :) )

Again, i wonder why they didn't provide separate poker tournaments for people for whom English is not the first language, and strictly enforce the rules relating to table etiquette. Just my opinion.

There was a large group of Brazilians on our Allure cruise in December, about 800. We did not experience any of the difficulties that anyone else has. The only small issue was in the Solarium 2 young boys were in the pool. The pool attendant tried to get them out but since they didn't understand English they did not respond to him. I spoke to them in my high school Spanish and they immediately left without any trouble.

Hey guys!

Even tough I'm Taiwanese I'm still pretty embarrassed by the subject of this post. :(

Despite being grown up in Brazil, more than 4 decades after and I am still not used to the local manners. It's not that all Brazilian behave like that but more than half of them will. That's enough to bump every now and then with such a rude behavior. Just like a gang the most of them the more comfortable they will be at breaking the rules and ignoring the rest... and there is another factor... money. Living in a country where we work almost 5 months to pay taxes it's not everyone that could afford buying "cruise tickets" so they often reinforce the motto "I bought it so I can !".

As others members already said that february's holiday was Carnaval, Carnival in english. Down here the kid's vacation starts at the beginning of December and goes to the Carnaval season varying each year. Do remember that down south it's summer time.

I wonder if in a cruise is it better to keep the mouth shut or discuss with the other party and keep bumping each other until disembarkation day.

All that said I wish I could apologize for all the rudeness and lack of civilization of the Brazilian but I can't. They are the majority and I'm not the parents that educated them... although the "Like Father, Like Son" was never so true!

Peace!

Thanks for posting your experience. I do think it has a lot to do with group mentality as well. And I, absolutely, agree about parents educating their kids.

A situation we encounter comes to mind...we were at Disney and there were many Brazilian tour groups who were loud/rude/pushed people/walked several people across so that others had to stand to the side etc. But one day, we were waiting in line, a little boy had a jersey/shirt that had the Brazilian flag and there was something written on it, I was trying to see what it said (plus he was eating an ice cream that dripped all over his shirt...lol) and the father said, very politely, that they were not part of the "gang" (as he called them) and somewhat apologized. I think he thought that since I was looking at his child's shirt, that I think they were like that. But I apologized and said that I was just trying to read what it said and the man laughed and said that since his son had ice cream all over it, he would let me know what it said (I don't even remember what he said), but we spoke to them for a while since the line was quite long. They were quite pleasant and very well behaved. So, I just thought that perhaps if these groups had their parents with them, they would be better behaved. But I may be wrong.

I do agree with others that RCCL should be more diligent in making sure that behaviour like this from any group should be handled appropriately so that it doesn't get out of hand.

I'm really touched by the fact that you guys instead of bashing here and there, are really trying to understand behaviors and disgressing about the reasons behind that.

Not everyone is equal, there are individual differences and each human being is unique but when in group some manners and behaviors stand out. I'm not trying to do a philosophical discussion or start a debate about human behavior but a while ago I was watching a TV documentary about a controlled experiment on how each nationality group behaves under some circumstances. In a countryside hotel, each week they hosted a group of tourists from a different nation, then a couple of actors passing as tourists (inside the group) start to act in a inappropriate way or do something not acceptable. Cameras in strategic sites recorded how the group reacted. Culture and tradition where apparent. Latin groups were the most forgiving when confronted to odd events and some weird manners are accepted as natural.

I still think that for some people money matters. In fact money really matters but some individuals think that when spending a significant amount of money they are at the top of the world. That's not the case because rules are rules everywhere and each one must obey the rules or better go somewhere else.

I was also on this cruise and the original poster has it spot on. I have never encountered so many rude obnoxious people! You couldn't go to the windnammer without someone bumping, cutting you. By the end of the cruise I was ready to throw elbows! I still had fun though:)
