Cinderellie Posted March 8, 2015 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2015 Sailing in a few weeks on the Grandeur of the Seas and wanted to know which dishes or desserts knocked your socks off? Which must we try? Thanks.
toluca46 Posted March 8, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) Just got off March 3rd from 28 days on the Grandure. We have had better food overall. The lobster was good. Steak was ok. Shrimp cocktail was very good. Wind Jammer food was just fair and the assortment was lacking. Hope you like bread pudding a lot in the wind jammer. The Hors d oeuvres were quite good in the Diamond lounge and the Concierge lounge available from 4:30 pm to 8 pm, Refreshments are free during these times if you qualify in the lounges. A new feature is 3 free drinks per person if you qualify during 4:30 pm to 8 pm. the 3 free drinks are automaticily put on your Sea Pass card, if you qualify. The 3 free drinks can not be used in the Casino, Theater, or Dining room, or Wind Jammer. all other lounges are ok. The breakfast in the wind jammer starts at 6:30 am for early risers. coffee was available of the pool deck all night on both sides up close to the wind jammer. Park Cafe is a very good breakfast spot at 8 am, also lunches there, are good with Soup,Salads and Sandwiches. Park Cafe is located in the Solarium area on Deck 9. Hope you have a great time. Yes we had 2 ft snow drifts in Baltimore on Deck 10 and snow covered the upper decks., I forgot breakfast in the dining room was ok except for the potato's. they always over grilled the spuds, pass on the dining room breakfast spuds. Magicat Posted March 8, 2015 #3 Share Posted March 8, 2015 We will also be going in a couple of weeks but want to know the big question. Did they have escargot? Also did you eat at any of the specialty dinning restaurants? How were they?
toluca46 Posted March 8, 2015 #4 Share Posted March 8, 2015 Escargot is available every night and I had it twice which was fine with me, but I prefer Shrimp Cocktail which was not available every night, but often. We did not try the specialty Restaurants. I heard they were very good. check for special pricing on the first night, possible discount. We were on for 28 days, beats the cold weather here. Never Baltimore again in Feb for us though. Enjoy. Bill
Cinderellie Posted March 9, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted March 9, 2015 We don't see the need to pay extra for the specialty restaurants. We are perfectly happy dining in the main dining room with fun tablemates.
Cinderellie Posted March 9, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted March 9, 2015 Thanks toluca46. Great synopsis. I do love bread pudding. Any other must try desserts?
Philly Steve Posted March 9, 2015 #7 Share Posted March 9, 2015 I know it's a simple thing, but breakfast in the Windjammer is always a highlight. They make a perfect fried egg at the omelette station. Breakfast is always better on the balcony too! ;)
Battlecat Posted March 9, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 9, 2015 We were on Grandeur at the end of January (the infamous norovirus cruise) - we really enjoyed the Park Cafe for egg sandwiches at breakfast and warm paninis at lunch. We also did dinner in each of the specialty dining restaurants - Chops was exceptional (the shrimp cocktail at Chops was amazing) and we really enjoyed Izumi and Giovanni's as well. The MDR was overall really good, we found that we most enjoyed the entrees when we followed our server's recommendations and/or went for the "featured" menu that night. spookwife Posted March 9, 2015 #9 Share Posted March 9, 2015 Park Cafe: Beef on Weck Parma ham and Brie panini soup of the day is usually the same as Buffet's egg sandwiches for breakfast. mini version of the tutti salad (you still choose what you want and they will mx it for you, but it is s smaller selection than MDR) they also have pre-made/sealed things like a shrimp or tuna salad on the first day minimum fruit/yoghurt/granola parfaits honestly it was our go to place for most meals outside of dinner. toluca46 Posted March 9, 2015 #10 Share Posted March 9, 2015 We boarded the day after the ship came in early for the Norovirus, cleaning was continuous for the better part of the week we boarded. We couldn't touch anything ourselves in the Wind Jammer. We were handed everything by someone at all stations, even silverware in a napkin. They finally discontinued the handing everything after 4 days. The rails and walls on all floors were continuosly wiped with disenfectant, even our door key slots on the rooms. Very little illness for the 28 days we were on our 3 cruises. Sea sickness was in the area for the first 2 cruises since we had 24 ft waves and serious rough seas. But that happens in our uncertain weather these days. Over all we enjoyed our 28 days. Never again Feb out of the east coast. We'll drive to Fort Lauderdale. Keep on cruising folks. We enjoy it with a little Jamesom please, vbg. My favorite drink with a splash of Ginger ale at Happy Hour.

toluca46 Posted March 9, 2015 #12 Share Posted March 9, 2015 We prefer Double chocolate cookies from The Lounges and small lava cakes from the Latitude bar.
Cinderellie Posted March 14, 2015 Author #13 Share Posted March 14, 2015 JKrise, what are Ranger Cookies?
toluca46 Posted March 14, 2015 #14 Share Posted March 14, 2015 someone else posted about ranger cookies, but they are just a soft cookie. I don't know all the ingredients, but they are ok, nothing wonderful. Double chocolate cookies are much tastier.
Langley Cruisers Posted March 14, 2015 #15 Share Posted March 14, 2015 JKrise, what are Ranger Cookies? Coconut Ranger cookies, very nice if they are baked soft and chewy. Some I've had were a little over-baked, in my opinion. :)
cruzinlady1947 Posted March 14, 2015 #16 Share Posted March 14, 2015 You can get your 3 drinks, loaded on your seapass card, in the theater and casino. I have done that on several cruises, unless they changed it since February. You just can't get them in the MDR, Windjammer or specialty restaurants. toluca46 Posted March 14, 2015 #17 Share Posted March 14, 2015 most time they have the coconut cookies too done. and in Feb, I never tried to get the 3 drinks anywhere except out side the concierge lounge at the regular bars, all I know is what I read about 3 drinks that said they weren't accepted in the theater, casino, Dining room and specialty Restaurants. I was there for 28 days and plenty to drink in the lounges at 4:30 to 8 pm and at the regular bars if I wanted. I like coconut cookies sometimes, but rarely are they soft and chewy. That's odd, because we have used the drink vouchers in the theater on several different ships. More inconsistency.

Cinderellie Posted March 18, 2015 Author #22 Share Posted March 18, 2015 I am looking forward to bagels and lox with capers and baked tomatoes, if they serve them here. Mmmmmm.
toluca46 Posted March 18, 2015 #23 Share Posted March 18, 2015 Park cafe has bagels every mourning at 8 am and fresh muffins, lots of cream cheeses also, They do have cream cheese with smoked salmon which I liked. The breakfast sandwiches were also pretty good. If you eat breakfast in the main dining room, skip the hash brown potato's , they sucked big time. They were scorched both times I had them. Enjoy your cruise.
