Best way to carry ship card

Mine goes into my neck pouch.

My husband uses his wallet - I use my handbag - but I bet no one has lost theirs within minutes of getting on the ship - my husband dropped his as we were getting in the lift and oops a daisy it went down the gap - I wonder how many cards the maintenance men find down at the bottom of the shaft

Well, when we're in a hotel, I usually put it in my back pocket if I leave the room. I think I'm going to get these for my hubby and I. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0098XJUO2/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1XFYGAMJI0MPP&coliid=IXLZUW7GJTHZZ&psc=1

Us a lanyard and have the staff punch a hole in the card at the Customer Service desk and just clip it on. Don't have to worry about it slipping out of the holder or anything. Plus, once you leave the slip, since there's no bulky holder, you can easily just slip the card in a shirt pocket so it's not dangling around in front of you all the time, identifying you everybody as a tourist. <g> It also means that you don't have to worry about forgetting to put it back in the holder every time you use it! <g>

We travelled with P&O Australia - they had two different punches available at reception - a slot one and a round hole one, and punched according to what you were hanging it off.

I picked up a couple of retractable card holders similar to what my daughter had issued for her security pass at work. The clip can go on a belt loop, on your handbag zipper etc. or tucked away when not in use. Ours were from our local dollar shop, very similar to these:

Honestly, I wear a lanyard as well. I think it's just the easiest thing I have found. Especially ladies, you know how sometimes you may have a sundress on or some type of slacks without pockets etc. I just like having somewhere to always have it. On our first cruise the first few days my husband offered to put it in his pocket for me, but if we would separate, sometimes he would forget and I would be without my card.

I obviously don't carry a purse anywhere on the ship, so yeah a lanyard just works so well.[/quot

We use the lanyard too. After 18 cruises, I'm not worried about "allowing anyone to see it." My vacation, my convenience. All of my clothes aren't the same: pockets on some, shallow pockets on some, no pockets on some. Just makes sense and I just drop it down under my shirt, simply to make sure it doesn't get into anything (buffet line) or get snagged by something. Works PERFECTLY. People used to think it was a sign it was your first cruise. No. Losing your card (multiple times), demagnetizing your card (multiple times), having people wait in line while you rummage through several pockets to locate it (multiple times) is something we see on every cruise....so we use a lanyard.

My only suggestion with a lanyard is I have seen those clear plastic holders fail. They can tear as one poor passenger found out when she returned to the ship in Juneau pulled her lanyard out of her jacket to board and the plastic part with card were gone. Mine broke on the last day of the cruise, so yes a hole punched in card is more secure. I sometimes tucked it in my camera case if I didn't want it around my neck. Also saw people with a coiled stretchy wrist thing

We buy the spiral key ring from any discount store. We bring a small single hole punch or go to the casino to get a hole punched. Everyone has their card around their wrist during the whole cruise. We do have to remember two things, take the key off when taking formal photos and don't punch a hole on the magnetic strip. Oh another thing is to put the ring so that the card can be swiped in the machine every time you exit or enter the ship. The key rings are perfect and are quickly removed from your wrist when needed. We can also swim or shop or do any activity without worrying about where to put the card. We find the spiral rings anywhere they sell keys.

My DH wears a medical alert necklace. Last cruise he wore a lanyard & they kept rubbing together which caused it to demagnetize 3 different times. The nice people at the Customer Service Desk ended up giving him a plastic holder to keep them separated. It worked great the rest of the trip.

There is one thing that I would urge everyone who uses a lanyard to consider and that is to make sure that your lanyard has a quick-release connection on the lanyard so that if it becomes caught on something that it will break away and not end up choking you or breaking your neck! Yes, the odds are against anything serious happening, but you only have to have something happen once to make it a dangerous situation. I hadn't thought about that until my wife mentioned it to me. I've got too many cruises and other things left to do before I check out so I wear only a lanyard that has a break-away feature now.

It seems the majority on this thread agrees on needing something special to carry a plastic card but I didn't find a specific reason for that. In daily life I manage to carry around a multitude of cards without a problem, and those are cards that actually have a value when stolen. On my (only) cruise I had no problem carrying it around, and the one time I didn't have it in one of my 5 pockets (specifically designed to carry around small things, and I must admit males have some advantage here), stating my cabin number was enough to get our drinks.

I put mines in my passport wallet. For the NCL ships that use the energy saving feature, I use a old gift card / sail card, so I not leaving the current one in the light slot and getting locked out. [emoji21]

Many people find it to be troublesome to have to reach into a pocket, wallet or something else to find their cruise card every time they want to purchase something on the ship and prefer it to be closer at hand while on board. Some also prefer, when going ashore, to be able to retrieve their cruise card quickly and easily without having to put down packages and go through pockets, etc. to find the card, have it scanned, then put it away again before picking up their packages. This is especially true when there is a long line of people behind you waiting to come on board. :)

As you say, guys have it a bit easier there. In the end, whatever makes you happy is the way to go!

You are totally right there.

But then again, on land I haven't seen many people carrying around their credit card with a lanyard. A credit card has real value to a thieve, a ship card would get the thieve maybe one drink before being put in jail. If you lose your ship card, the front office will get you a new one. I really don't understand why a ship card is that sacred.

I get the store to punch a hole as soon as we are on board. The card goes on a lanyard.

During the day, I always carry around a beach bag. YEAH..pain in the butt but I do it for a few reasons. I like to always have with me:

-Lactaid (if I'm hungry for a sandwich that has cheese, I don't want to run back to the room)

-Sunglasses (I wear prescription glasses and sunglasses. I'm always in and out so I need to exchange them out)

-Suntan Lotion - being fair, I'm always replenishing

-Lip Conditioning for the same reason

-Camera - TONS of picture opportunities

-Funtimes to know what fun things are coming up

-Book

So...around my bag handle, I wrap the lanyard so it hangs just inside the bag secure. I always have my bag and I always have my landyard without it hanging around my neck and I don't have to go digging in the bag for it! :)

Nightime, I trade for a cute messanger type bag with almost the same stuff. Landyard is tucked inside but attached to the handle for easy accessibility.

I also use a lanyard/holder set. It find it so much easier than just slipping it in your pocket (especially since clothing designers seem to think ladies don't need pockets ). I got mine off Etsy and have purchased others as gifts for friends and family.

On cruise ships we see plenty of "lanyard people" and "robe people" which always make DW and I smile. DW was a classroom teacher for over 32 years and there is no way she will ever again put a lanyard around her neck. But that is certainly an option. We have actually seen "lanyard people" walking around in European ports and once had a lady (wearing a lanyard with her cruise card) tell us (in Honfleur, France) how she carefully dressed not to look like an American or cruiser. Too funny.

As to how to carry the card I simply put it in my pocket :). DW often carries her in her Kindle cover (she does not go anywhere on a ship without her Kindle) or in a pocket. It is weird that we do not notice folks walking around our home town with lanyards. Wonder what they do with their house keys?
