What is the nicest thing a RCI crew member has ever done for you?

Recommended Posts

It wasn't any one specific thing...but when we took our kids on Serenade of the Seas to Alaska, they treated them like mini royalty, day in and day out. After our first dinner in the MDR, the waiter would immediately bring my then 8 year old son a pepperoni pizza within moments of us sitting down, and my then 3 year old daughter her favorite chicken strips and fries...that way they weren't "forced" to wait through the ordering process before eating. And the waiter always graciously and quietly asked me if it was OK to offer them ice cream BEFORE he asked the kids if they wanted any. As you know...sugar before bedtime is not always a good thing!

On any given day, a random staff member would often stop if we were just sitting at a table on deck and make my daughter a little origami animal out of a towel, or a piece of paper. We have pictures of my daughter with a sweet man from the Philippines who one day made her a complete Statue of Liberty crown and torch!

The naturalist on board spent almost thirty minutes patiently answering my son every single question under the sun about bears. He happened to be standing next to him and overheard him ask me a question I didn't know the answer to.

We used the in room babysitting three times and used the same lovely girl from Jamaica who would bring a giant duffle bag filled with puzzles, games, and a travel DVD player with movies, etc. If I could have smuggled her home with me, I would have.

Honestly, the constant kindness and goings out of their way for our kids is too extensive to describe.

My kids were literally heart broken to leave the ship. And to this day...six years later...they still ask to go back on "our" ship.

What a terrific memory your kids have.

My very first cruise was solo, and also my first time outside Europe. I'd had an awful trip just to get to the ship (missed flight, abominable Delta staff, damaged suitcase so some of my clothes were lost - anything that could go wrong, did). I eventually made the ship in OK time, but considerably later than I'd planned (and with an unexpected overnight stay in Atlanta). I got on board, found a seat in a practically empty bar, and just sat there for a few minutes to collect myself and try figure out what happened next - I had absolutely no idea what to expect (it was before I knew about cruise critic), or how things worked or anything.

The three barstaff for that bar ending up adopting me for the trip, constantly checking if I was OK, giving me a "taste" of drinks to see if I liked them. They really made the holiday for me! The barman used magically source fresh fruit for cocktails for me (instead of using the syrups). He asked what did I normally drink at home, and I'd mentioned vodka and lucozade (which wasn't something I'd seen outside of Ireland/UK). Next day he called me over to go inside the bar, where he opened a fridge to show me 4 bottles of lucozade he'd got hold of!

They'd give me tips about things to do and see in each port. One day I was sitting around reading a book and noticed a large bunch of people being lead around the place. Turns out they were in the middle of a behind the scenes tour. I mentioned that it sounded interesting, next thing there were a few quiet words, and I was suddenly joining in for the end of the tour (the galleys).

I still keep an eye out each cruise to see if I spot any the three :)

On our FOS cruise in 2011 on the night of my birthday I ordered a beer at one

of the outside bars by the pool. The bartender said "Hey it's your birthday?,

I'll buy you a shot" I told him I did not drink shots and he said "Then I will buy you a beer!"

Was really touched by that ...

Two years ago on Adventure, we were in the Caribbean and I wanted to take a ring back to the jewellers I had purchased it from for some minor repairs . We decided to go on an excursion instead and the port shopping guide took my ring and had the work done. He returned it to our cabin and there was no charge for any of it. I'm sure that's part of his job however we were very impressed.

July 2009 my wife and our two sons left on GOS for a 10 day Caribbean Trip. Though not our first cruise, it was to be our last together. Two months later, my wife and best friend of over 30 years lost her year long battle with cancer. We took the cruise knowing this might be our last, and determined to make it great. And thanks to the crew and RCI, it was! One of my most wonderful memories was a crew attendant in the Windjammer that would ride my wife's rented scooter to and from the table to a out of the way parking place by the main entrance. We rented the scooter because Sharon was gradually having problems walking due to her treatments. Anyway, Sharon and I always got a laugh when the same staff member would rush to help her with the scooter. I don't think the guy was ever on one, and he had this enormous smile while he would drive the scooter, weaving around the tables and the isles of the Windjammer. It was one of many lasting memories of the special cruise.

Now almost seven years later, I am leaving again on Grandeur the 21st of March. This trip will be another first cruise with a wonderful woman I have been together with for the past two years. I'm glad the GOS has been thru refit because it will have a different look, yet still have the charm I remember. And most of all, the exceptional crew that work so hard to make each cruise special for us guest.

I'm sure this trip will also be one of those great memories that remain with us forever.

Gad zooks! You made me cry and laugh in one post. :D

First let me admit that I stole this thread idea from Carnival. I thought it would be a change to hear some nice things.

My story - on our very first cruise (many years ago) we had cheese blintzes for dessert one night. The next night I looked at the menu and none of the desserts appealed to me and I told our server that I sure wished I could have the cheese blintzes again. To my surprise she was able to get them for me.

One more - we were cruising on our anniversary and when our server found out, he made me a rose out of a napkin and tin foil. It was lovely and I still have it.

This is a fun topic and is appreciated among all the negativity.

If a crew member remembers me, and they have....it makes it NICE.

Two years ago, I went on a weeklong cruise on Navigator with three of my girlfriends as a combination birthday/graduation present to myself (I went back to college in my 40s and became a Registered Nurse).

All three of my friends were "cruise virgins" and this was my fifth cruise but my first on RCCL.

Our waiter in the MDR (a 20-year veteran with RCCL) was from Jamaica, and when he found out that my friend's high-school-age daughter would be in Jamaica later that year for missionary work, he exchanged contact information and made arrangements to meet with the daughter when she was there. He showed her a part of Jamaican living that she never would have seen otherwise.

Our waiter on Vision Panama Canal cruise in 2000, anticipated what we would like. On night I ordered Sprite and every night after that a Sprite was waiting for me. This is when soda was included with dinner.

We were on the Monarch when it repo'd from LA to PC. My wife got sick from water (we know...we know...) in Acapulco. All she needed was a dose of immodium. We were directed to the Medical Office, where the Dr without real exam declared she had Norovirus and confined her to the cabin for 48 hours - and me for 24 to see if I got sick too. We would be unable to leave while the ship was in Costa Rica.

Our room steward, Hershell, saw how upset my wife was about not being able to see Costa Rica. Besides taking extra-special care of us (bringing DR food before that was offerred in suites, etc), as we were leaving Costa Rica, he and his girlfriend (she was a bartender) showed up at our room with a bag full of souvenirs they bought for us. We still keep in touch.

my bartender (can't remember his name, but he looked like Alexander oniell) sorted me out a nice little philippino girl ..

what a hero !!

Stitchman, I realize you're in London, so your terminology of "sorted me out a nice little phiippino girl" probably makes complete sense to another reader in England. However here in America? Not sure exactly what you are referring to - I hope it means he introduced you to a nice young woman....right? Because if money was involved, either between you and the bartender or you and the girl, I'm pretty sure we don't want to know.... Lol. :D

On the first night of our cruise on Liberty of the Seas in November 2012, our waiter overheard my wife mention how tired she was and wanted to stay up so we could have more fun. She brought over a double shot espresso free of charge to "perk" her up. This cruise was nowhere near capacity, and we ended up being the only 2 people in her section most nights. She had also just been promoted to waiter from assistant that week, so we were her test subjects ha! Many napkin shenanigans, and extra plates of food to try things out was had that week.

On our cruise last week I asked the bartender in the CL for a lemon drop martini and explained that I do not drink martinis--but, heard they were good.

So, she said let me make you some to try. Over the next few days she made me every martini you can imagine. [pomegranate, French, mango, peach, etc]

It was a fun to go to the CL to see what Melody would make me that night. :)

ps--I liked the lemon drop the best. :D

On a recent sailing with RC I had a cabin with a roll away bed for my older son (24) and the roll away sagged horribly and he would have had back issues for certain. The casters were missing and even with magazines stacked under them it was still horrible. Customer Relations gave my son his own cabin (no extra charge) and i happily accepted!

We took a cruise on the Explorer back in 2002 with our then 8 y/o daughter. We had a great waiter who took very good care of us. Two years later we were on the Rhapsody. DH and I were walking in the dining room w/o our daughter and we saw our same waiter from the Explorer. When he saw us - he came up and asked where our daughter was. I have no idea how he remembered us two years later and without our daughter. We're pretty low-key people - not people I would think would leave an impression. I was impressed.

I love this thread but I am just now learning about these WOW cards. Our first cruise was on the Liberty and was listening in on a conversation at the Cafe Promenade. I heard him mention these WOW cards and how much they seem to mean to crew members but didn't really think much of it beyond that, considering the WOW overload I was already experiencing as a newbie cruiser. We just sailed last month and we were never provided with these cards. I would know because I kept every piece of paper I got from the cruise (LOL). Next time, I'll have to check with guest services and pick up a few. There were some extraordinary folks during our IOS cruise and regret that I was not able to do this for them.

FYI, you can only get WOW cards if you're a Crown-and-Anchor member, and you can only be a C&A member if you've already cruised before (although there is a workaround if you have an M-Life casino membership).

So you weren't eligible to get WOW cards to give out on your first cruise.

  • 7 months later...

Has anyone every made a special request for a waiter? We had a waiter last year who we would love to have again in the MDR. He found out we liked Indian food, and he worked out with the Head waiter that we would get served the same food that the Indian staff received. It was some of the best food we ever had on a ship, as well as some of the best Indian food we had had.

Our waiter also asked for our son every night, even though we sent him to camp in the evenings, since the little guy was just not up to a long meal. One morning he found us and spent quite a bit of time with our son, who had the best time.
