While I am not a single passenger and hope to never be, I do have a question about the single supplement in this case and where the supplement is 100%.

Azamara is discounting the fare for a couple to 150% of the normal fare and that is a very reasonable promotion. You now state that a single will pay the same 150% for their cruise. I seems to me that the single person will use about 50% of the couple in terms of food, drink, and other items that have a cost such that it seems that the single fare might be fairer if it were somewhat less than the 150% and Azamara would cover the same fixed costs as well as make the same profit that they do when a couple is occupying the cabin.

While none of us could possibly come up with the exact cost for a single am sure Azamara could. Don't want to impact Azamara profitability in any case but, seems like single pricing could be a bit less than the 150% without impacting profitability at all. This also would apply to 200% premiums for a single and that could likely be reduced without impacting profitability.

Some food for thought for the head shed.

Thanks,

The subject of what constitutes a fair single supplement has been discussed across various threads for different cruise lines where there has been heated debate and never any consistent agreement.

It is not as simple as saying that a single traveller should pay less as they consume less in terms of food and drink than two people would. The cruise line also has to take into account that they will lose revenue on shore excursions, casino, shops and other areas for which there is a charge onboard. Some would say that this loss of revenue exceeds the savings on food and drink, which is why a 200% single fare is justifiable.

I applaud Azamara for offering certain sailings at 125% and 150% and hope that this is something they will continue to do in the future

I share your praise of Azamara for not sticking to the 200% supplement. Am sure we won't reach agreement in full but, need to point out it is not revenue that should be considered, it is profit.

For instance which would you prefer to run, a company with revenues of $1.0M and a profit $50K or a company with revenue of $.75M and a profit of $100K?? While high revenue is nice, it is the profit that drives up the value of a company and makes the stock holders/owners happy. I tried to explain that in my previous post as the unused food, drink, and other amenities are 100% profit while the losses for excursions, shops, casino and other items have profits that are only a small percentage of the revenue.

Yes I agree that it is the profit on the onboard spend that they lose. I guess my point is that only the cruise line knows the facts and figures here and I suspect that it is a rather complicated calculation.

Thank you for checking, Bonnie, and thank you Azamara for helping the single cruiser! I never thought I'd be a single cruiser, either, but we don't always get what we want.

The 12/12/2015 balcony cabin went up $500 so it's not really a sale. Just another marketing ploy.

All sales were not created equally. I tried a dummy rebooking of the cruise we booked under the December sale for a balcony cabin on the 7/3/16 7-day cruise and the new "sales price" for the same cabin class is $950 higher. Azamara pricing seems pretty random and fluctuations are probably very dependent on demand.

HI Bonnie. I just wanted to be clear on the single supplement prices. Some sailings offer the 125%, listed on Azamara website. But I am not clear what the listed price is reflecting... Is the price on the Azamara website, as shown, the discounted price for the current special( BOHO, the 50% off second person in the cabin), or is the full price? I am hoping that it is the full price so that the single person can then be clear on the 25% supplemental cost. If the price listed reflects the discounted price for the sailing, then it is difficult to know what price the single cruiser is dealing with. Can you help clear this up for me? Thanks

In all cases the fare shown on the website is the current retail per person price. Off of that fare you'd calculate either the BOGOHO or the single supplement. Hope this helps.

Bonnie

  • 2 weeks later...

My TA had forgotten the BOGOHO sale, so she simply requested the 150% supplement until I sent her the thread from here. I haven't gotten a confirmation number yet, but I am pretty sure she will send it soon. I jumped the gun when I posted here, I should have let her push through. Sorry.

But assuming everything works, I'll be changing from the Southampton to Montreal, to the Capitals of Europe trip. That is just a far more exciting itinerary, even though it is a little more expensive.

I am very happy that Azamara is giving a 150% single supplement for many cruises that I would have previously had paid 200%. It is fair that if two people sail for 150% for a cabin, so should one person. I just booked the Norwegian Fiords for 2017 (one that never has 125% supplement), for the 150% rate, plus I was given the full $200 OBC, (for on board booking) not the $125 rate for solo travelers! Thanks Azamara.

Thank YOU Leo178 for choosing Azamara Club Cruises and for booking a cruise two years out :)

Hi Bonnie,

Having read about the 'Azamara Best Price Guarantee' on this thread, I saw the new Azamara promotion of 50% off the second person's cruise fare. I have booked a cruise with the Quest for October 2016 for a price of £4700 but found using the same offer I could get it for £3900. I rang the call centre (on the number on the Azamara.co.uk website). The chap I spoke to had never heard of your Best Price Guarantee. He went away to talk to someone else and came back and told me it doesn't apply in the UK. Can you verify that for me. If it's true it seems very unfair!

Fares, and terms, are not the same throughout the world. This is a topic that came up a few months ago on this forum. The various markets control the pricing and what is included in the fare or not included. Also different agencies have different prices. It does get complex.

In light of this, it is not possible for me to know whether you are comparing apples with apples.

Since you are in the UK, I suggest you email the UK MD Richard Twynam at RTwynam@azamaraclubcruises.com to discuss the particulars of your situation.

I do hope it works out in your favor.

The T&C's for the Best Price Guarantee state...

"Azamara Club Cruises’ Best Price Guarantee (the "Guarantee") is available for United States & Canada consumers that book an Azamara Club Cruises voyage on or after August 1, 2014...."

Nevertheless it will be interesting to see what Azamara UK say. Good luck with getting a lower price.

I got a phone call from a member of Mr Twynham's staff. She was not aware that the Best Price Guarantee logo now shows up on the UK website too!

She did, however assure me that I could cancel and rebook at the lower price, but when we looked at prices, the new promotion was not cheaper. I realised that I had been looking at the wrong cruise - same ship, similar itinerary but in November rather than October. Silly me - must double check in future. Sorry, Bonnie, if I have caused anyone any hassle!
