cruisingbarb Posted April 30, 2015 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2015 We are on the Emerald Princess in September and they have now canceled the stop in Tunisia and we will be going to Salerno instead. However, on the first leg of the cruise we will be in Naples and are planning on going to Pompeii, Positano and Sorrento. It looks like we can do similar things from Salerno but since we will have just done them, any suggestions as to what to do in and around Salerno. FYI, we have been to Capri before so that's not an option. Thanks.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted April 30, 2015 #2 Share Posted April 30, 2015 There are several options. You could change your plans to do the Amalfi Coast from Salerno (much more convenient). Then from Naples you could visit Pompeii and the National Archaeological Museum. Or Pompeii and Sorrento. Or you could keep your plan "as is" for Naples and visit Paestum from Salerno; it's a lovely site with some ruined Greek temples and a lovely small museum. (And nearby there are bufalo mozzarella farms with farm stands.....)
bcnvcanada Posted May 4, 2015 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2015 Is public transit easy to get from the docked area. We do not know much about this port other than the Americans landed there in World War II. Any help would be wonderful.
insanemagnet Posted May 4, 2015 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2015 Is public transit easy to get from the docked area. Easyish. The port is an industrial one, so there is a mandatory free bus to take you to the port gates. From there there are public buses that run along the front to the town centre. Use Google maps public transport directions to see the bus stops and the routes. However you need to buy tickets from a tobacconist shop or similar before you get on the bus. Or you can walk, it takes around an hour. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/40.6724763,14.7363785/40.6722459,14.7672653/@40.8303119,14.3117999,7z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e3 When we were last there, the cruise line ran a bus from the ship to the town centre for a charge about four times the cost of the local bus. From the "Porto turistico" in the centre, you can catch small ferry boats to Amalfi and then Positano. You can do both, but it is a long day, and a long way on what can be a choppy sea on a small boat. You can also catch a local bus to or from both towns, so you could go one way on the ferry and the other by bus.
Adventures ahead Posted May 4, 2015 #5 Share Posted May 4, 2015 Hi, Barb I also read here that the ferries may not be reliable so it would be good to have a Plan B.
bcnvcanada Posted May 6, 2015 #6 Share Posted May 6, 2015 Does any one know which bus to the train station 4 or 9 and if there is a tabacco stand nearby to purchase tickects from? We are going to go to Paestum. We tried a couple of tour companies but they would have to come from Naples and would charge for this.
Rare mskaufman Posted May 6, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 6, 2015 We were able to take a boat tour from Salerno to Amalfi. Sorry but I do not have the company reference. Seeing the Amalfi Coast from the water is a different perspective.
