Anyone ever just order appetizer/dessert in MDR

Hi! It has been a few years since sailing on NCL. We purchased the UDP for our upcoming Breakaway cruise and booked primarily late dinners. Just wondering if anyone ever just goes in to the MDR earlier in the evening (non-peak time) and order an appetizer and possibly a dessert? I prefer appetizers over main courses and my husband is all about desserts. Or just desserts later in the evening?

I've never done it, but there is absolutely no reason you can't do that. Eat what you wish.

You can even eat appetizers in one MDR and then go to another for dessert. <== just using that as an example of you being free to eat what you want.

You mean you'd have an appetizer or a dessert and then go to a specialty restaurant for your dinner?

We had UDP, ate at Moderno and the went to Taste afterwards just for dessert amd coffee. Our trip was winding down and we just wanted to try out Taste. We asked before being seated and they said it was no problem.

On our cruise aboard the Gem several weeks ago, five of us had dinner in Orchid Garden. It was terrible, our only truly negative dining experience of the week. (I posted a thread about it, it was that bad.) We left as soon as we could, and headed over to Magenta (the smaller MDR), where we had dessert and coffee.

Won't each of the specialty restaurants offer appetizers and dessert? Couldn't you have your whole meal in that restaurant? I'm not 'getting it'. :o

I think the OP mayb be a hobbit who wants a "pre-dinner" at 6pm, before his real dinner at 10pm.

And yes, you can do it. With the UDP, you can even have an appetizer at a specialty restaurant, your entree at another, and your dessert at a third restaurant. I love Freestyle :)

I plan to enjoy each course in the Specialty Restaurant, but there are a few appetizers offered in the MDR that I think I would enjoy earlier in the evening with a pre-dinner glass of wine. We tend to eat a very light lunch so the appetizers would be like a tapa before dinner.

I think this is a great idea!

On the BA in late March, we sat next to a party of 4 who just finished the Cirque dinner show and they're still hungry (paid full price, no UDP) - thus went to the Manhattan MDR for hot/warm soup, starter & yes, dessert as well. Perfectly fine, IMO.

We saw Cirque last year & ate early, and went - afterward - upstairs to the buffet for soup, fruits & dessert, etc. as quickies before heading down to play in the casino.

We have booked our platinum free dinner as soon as the restaurant opens, told them on making reservations we wanted only appetizers and a bottle of wine. Great experience! We are usually the only ones there so the entire staff will come over to chat with us. We love that.

I love it!!!

Then I officially challenge you to embark on a most unusual quest of the culinary variety. I double dog dare you to sample a single delicacy from each free eatery within a 4-hour period. This tasteful quest will be its own reward.

:D
