Rare LewiLewi Posted July 12, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2015 Are Mah Jongg sets available on board? Are playing cards provided by HAL? These were available on both Princess and Celebrity. Just wondering if they are provided by HAL.

sofietucker Posted July 12, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 12, 2015 Have not seen mah jongg in any library/game room on any cruise line--and we look; cards are also available at guest services (& maybe casino). Count the cards in open decks in game rooms...have occasionally found some missing.
Rare richwmn Posted July 12, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 12, 2015 While I don't have personal experience I would be cautious about mah jongg and other games available on board. In past comments I remember that people have mentioned missing playing pieces - just like many games in our homes.
Krazy Kruizers Posted July 12, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 12, 2015 Many of the games are locked up and you have the ask the librarian for them. The librarian is no longer on duty all day as in previous years. We borrowed a scrabble game one time -- not all the letters were there.
EbayCruiser Posted July 12, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 12, 2015 On past cruises, we have purchased a set of playing cards from the Casino for $1.00.

ithaca gal Posted July 13, 2015 #8 Share Posted July 13, 2015 Thank you all for your responses. I will check as soon as we board. Yes, do not count on having a complete mahjongg set. The one on the Eurodam this year was missing one tile.
starryuk Posted July 13, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 13, 2015 aah mahjongg! We played it regularly in my family years ago, I can still hear the very satisfying click click of the tiles as we built our walls! Loved it as a child. Dragons, honours, bones, bamboos...such words to excite the imagination! I don't know anyone who plays it here in the uk, although I do have a slightly inferior plastic set. Perhaps I should investigate.
take us away Posted July 13, 2015 #10 Share Posted July 13, 2015 As of a few months ago, do know the Amsterdam had at least 4 Mah Jongg sets and all were complete, but as previous said - they are kept locked up. Would recommend buying cards in the casino or bringing your own as who knows where they have been. At least you can clean the tiles in MJ sets. Flying Posted August 20, 2015 #11 Share Posted August 20, 2015 I just got back from HAL Eurodam and they had 2 Mah Jongg sets. I did not play so don't know if they were complete. They advertised for players in the daily newsletter but no one showed up to play but myself. I'll be on HAL Volendam 12/22/15 to 2/2/16 so if there are any Mah Jongg players that will be sailing, let's get together.
Alberta Quilter Posted August 21, 2015 #12 Share Posted August 21, 2015 After my recent experience with norovirus on the Maasdam in May, I would be cautious of using playing cards that had been handled by others before. As someone said, you can clean the Mah Jong tiles but playing cards are difficult to clean. I can tell you, I won't be very quick to do jigsaw puzzles onboard anymore! While my cruise wasn't ruined, it did decrease the enjoyment a wee bit.
