Casino Bar - smoking changes?

Let me just say RIGHT UP FRONT that I don't want this to devolve into a typical smoking/non-smoking thread that has to get locked or deleted. So.. let's just address the topic at hand!

On the last several Carnival cruises we've sailed I've seen perhaps half the casino bar adorned with the typical non-smoking signs (cigarette with red circle and slash mark), presumably meaning that the other half of the bar (closest the casino) was OK for smokers.

On the Sunshine (just got off this morning) they instead had the following signs on half the bar (near the casino):

Sorry if it's a bit fuzzy... when I took the photo, that might have seemed "in focus" at the time! :D

I'm not sure what the goal of this sign change was, as it left me wondering about the smoking status (permitted or not) at the far end of the bar where the non-smoking signs used to be...

Is the sign just paper or is it hard plastic? When I smoked I had one of those made from paper and it was designed for smokers to place in public smoking areas while they were there smoking to ensure a more or less hassle free environment. Maybe a guest brought it on board because I haven't seen them on the ships recently.

It was a hard/plastic sign. Several of them at the end of the bar.

You mention such a sign might make the area less of a hassle for smokers. Sounds reasonable to me. I suppose it's a kinder/gentler approach having a sign which permits something than one which forbids it...

That was the idea and for the most part it worked.

It's a subtle change that's is geared for a more positive message .

It's saying to smokers " you are welcome here" vs you are prohibited/not welcome.

You see these popping by up in many areas on land

And I think to also indicate to nonsmokers that it is indeed a designated space.

I like this idea...when we did smoke we had woman get horribly nasty to us for smoking on the appropriate side of the lido deck. I'm sure she thought we were in the wrong :/ It worked in our favor, we became buddies with a couple two tables over who came to our defense and we have kept in touch to this day. :)

I think it's a subtle change, and a good one, previously the ship's were smoking ship's with dedicated areas for non smoking. Over the past few years there has been a subtle but noticeable shift to a non-smoking ship's that allows smoking in certain areas.

You sign for the areas the different, since most places are non smoking the signage is a affirmative that this is a smoking area. If done correctly it SHOULD help avoid conflict.

Tom, not to steal the thread, but we enjoyed finally meeting you, Cheryl and your son on the Sunshine. We only got a few minutes to talk, hope to sail with you again.

Not a steal at all ! I as equally nice finally getting to meet you and your wife as well. That's the longest I've hung around a Diamond event (nearly an hour) !

I did notice those signs on the Glory at the bar closest to the casino. They were also stuck (in smaller form) to designated slot machines. I don't smoke but some of my family members do. It made it easier for them to see which areas of the casino/bar were smoking right off the bat. I usually hang out with them in those areas and if it gets to be too much, I leave. No biggie.

This last time I also noticed the additional air purifiers which I thought helped a lot.

I think it's just a change in messaging.

It could have been because although the no smoking signs were only placed on half the bar (with the other half being smoking allowed), that there was often a misinterpretation by non-smokers that the entire bar was indeed non-smoking (after all - hey, there's a sign in front of me on the bar that says no smoking).

I think it's probably easier for the bartenders to say to someone, "Could you please move down to where the smoking signs are?" then to explain over and over again, "It's only this half of the bar where smoking isn't allowed. That gentleman down there with the lit cigarette isn't breaking the rules."

Since there was no literal line down the middle of the bar, it probably made it tough on the bartenders.

I just missed you Tom. We were getting on when you were getting off. They definitively only allow smoking at half the bar. My SIL was told to move. It was funny because she was one seat over from an ash tray and asked the bartender to hand it to her.

BTW there one night around 11 PM there was some guy playing $500.00 a hand at BJ. He was up over 11k when I let. I felt like a gnat playing my $50.00 a hand. I was happy when I left $500.00 ahead for the day.

Back to the topic. It is smoking only at half the bar.

As far as I'm concerned, the entire casino bar is for the smokers. They may only be sitting at half of the bar but their smoke affects the air in the entire bar area.

Last time that I was on the Triumph, it started that way. By the 2nd night, all of the non-smoking signs were gone and it was a complete smoking bar for the rest of the cruise.

It kind of makes sense. When I was on the Elation there were so many smokers crowded into half the bar area and they were so closely packed and smoking so much the entire casino was filled with smoke anyway.

I think they should make it even more clear and place the red non-smoking signs on the right side of the bar and the green smoking signs on the left side of the bar.

To me it doesn't make sense to only tell someone where they can smoke without making it equally clear where they can't. Each of the machines in the casino have red or green labels on them.

Maybe they are trying to appear more accommodating to the smokers.

Unfortunately a "no smoking" sign will not protect anyone from secondhand smoke if it's only 3 feet away from a "you can smoke" sign.

I don't believe anyone is forcing you to sit at the other half of the bar though I could be wrong about that.

The smoking half of the bar is closest to the casino and the non-smoking half is next to the corridor that passes through the ship so there is less smoke in the corridor.

One would hope so but it doesn't work out that way when there are lots of smokers on board. I never sit at the casino bar but when I cannot even walk past the casino without coughing and gagging then it's a problem.

I think they are just re-defining the space, again. Still half and half.
