Excursion salmon bake vs. salmon onboard the cruise ship?

We're going to the salmon bake in Juneau next Monday rain or shine. From the reviews there appears to be large covered areas. But, hey if you don't get a little wet it wouldn't be the full Alaska experience ;)

The salmon on the ship will be from somewhere and will be frozen. The salmon at the salmon bake will be from Alaska but may have to be frozen as fresh caught salmon is seasonal.

Do the salmon bake or just go to a good on-shore restaurant.

We're doing an Alaska cruise next May and eating some good salmon sounds nice. Are the $50 salmon bake excursions (Juneau-Gold Creek or Skagway-Liarsville) better than the salmon served on the cruise ship (Carnival Legend)?

The salmon served on the ship is not local nor is it fresh. It has been sitting in someone's freezer for a while. There is no comparison in the taste.

Depending on when you are there the salmon bakes may be fresh local or frozen. In May it is probably frozen from the previous season. The salmon are not running that early in the year.

winter commercial salmon trolling in SE begins October and continues through June, but I agree most will be cleaning out their freezers.

seems none of the bakes tell of what species is on the grill.

The salmon bake in Juneau tastes much better than the salmon on the ship.

You'll love the salmon bake! The corn bread that they serve there is extra delicious. Also try the salmon with the birch syrup, might not look good, but it definitely tastes very unique. :)
