We have a penthouse suite on the dawn in NOV and I'm wondering if we carry on our luggage if we can get settle in and unpack right away. I've read someone escorts you directly to your room after check in so this makes sense to me instead of checking luggage and waiting for it. We only take one bag each. How large of luggage can you take when you carry on? They would be 25" and 28" suitcases.

If you get there early normally the Concierge will escort you to Cagney's for lunch not to the cabin unless it is ready. If you want your carry on brought to your cabin then your Butler would be called and they would bring it to the cabin if the cabin is not ready.

The suitcases for carry on are the ones that fit thru X-Ray machines so if it fits though the machine then you can carry it on.

We are on the Dawn in November, too. If I were you I would just check it and wait for them to bring it. Its a long walk and up a set of escalators. You also get priority luggage tags and they get you your luggage pretty quick. We get there early and we have always dropped off our carry on bags before we go to Cagneys. On our last cruise our escort was new to the Dawn (he wasn't a butler, he worked in the casino) and we showed him how to get to our suite....

We've had penthouse suites on our last 5 cruises and have never been escorted directly to the suite, just to the restaurant for lunch. We've always boarded before the cabins were ready though so, maybe if you board later it might be different.

Escorting to the cabin usually only happens on the smaller ships like Sky. But it can only happen IF the rooms are ready. If you board early between 1130 and 1 they probably wont be ready. Most times you will be escorted to the Haven area/restaurant or Cagneys. Some times we lost our escort and went about or ways ourselves.

I never could understand why anyone needs escorted anywhere. It just is silly but it makes some people feel important or something LOL ;)

My wife and I had an aft suite on the Gem twice. Both times we each had a carry on. We were taken to Cagney's for lunch and our butler ask if we would like or bags taken to the room. We said yes please, we were never "escorted" back to the cabin

It was also a ship with a 2:1 passenger:crew ratio, so on average if they only used 19% of the crew they'd each escort 10 cabins, use 20% of the crew 5 cabins each, it would tie anyone up for more than about an hour.

Can someone tell me what the purpose of an escort is? Is it just to make sure that you know where your room is and it's just a little perk for the suite guests? It can't be that hard to find a room.

When I first started cruising in the 70's that was standard procedure, of course the ships only held 300 - 800 passengers with a 2:1 ratio back then. That and dozens of extras were removed over the years so now the masses can enjoy cruising for a third of the price.

Very interesting question.

 

I think that one of the functions was for you to meet your butler (hard to plan considering to each butler can have up to 10 suites) and for the butler to show you around the suite.

 

We had an escort to our suite on our first cruise just to drop off our carry on and then we were taken to Cagney's for lunch.

 

While the idea is there, it is very hard to implement.

I just commented on some possibilities, when I was escorted that was per the Butlers request and he wasn't sure on some of my request and we were able to clear everything up before we sailed.

Its a way to show special attention to the suite guests. For the first groups its to walk them onboard before everyone else. Since the rooms are not ready yet they take them to the suite lunch at Haven restaurant or Cagney's.

 

On the away ships they have a elevator that is signed Haven guests only during embarkation.

As always I love your logic & just plain common sense! I read posts about what people expect because they are staying in a suite & can only think there must be nights butlers on these ships lay in bed dreaming of inventive ways of throwing suite passengers overboard 😝
