Staying on board at port - what is there to do?

We love to stay onboard when the ship is in port! The casino and shops will be closed. The pools, hot tubs, mini golf and other sports on deck will be open and not nearly as crowded as sea days. Sometimes the water slides are open. There are less organized activities, but they still have some. The lido food areas are open and several bars around the ship. We love to relax and enjoy the lido when it isn't so crowded.

If we were to stay on board at Progreso, what is there to do? Are all the normal things still open etc?

Eat, drink, lay in the sun, swim, explore the ship while it's quiet, get a spa treatment...

The onboard shops and casino are closed while in most ports including Progresso. There are very few activities going on around the ship during port days.

I love to enjoy the ship while most passengers are ashore and it's quiet.

Thanks everyone! I was just thinking that everything might be closed/roped off for cleaning/maintenance/whatever. We've never been to Progreso (first cruise) but wont be doing an excursion. We were considering walking to the beach from the shuttle drop-off but seeing that we are doing a beach day excursion at Mr. Sancho's the next day in Cozumel I'm thinking of maybe just staying on the ship. Thanks again!

I was wondering this also, we are going to jump off the ship in Amber Cove and wander around port a bit and then get back on board before lunch. Sounding like an even better idea now:)

That's EXACTLY our plan for Amber Cove! If there's a great spa package that day I plane to take advantage.

Last year, we traveled with our kids and grandson. For one port day, everyone except my grandson and I were going on a full day excursion. My grandson and I planned to spend the day at the pool/hot-tubs/waterslide.

The family left, we packed a bag for top-side fun and headed up only to find that they closed the main pool, hot-tubs and slide for maintenance. It was closed for the entire day. So out of desperation, we headed to the back pool & hot-tubs. We were the ONLY people there aside for a lady laying in a lounge chair and security came and told us that we couldn't use the area as it was "adult only". I tried to explain that everything was closed and the area was EMPTY...it didn't matter...so we left.

I really regretted not taking him on an excursion at that point. Very sad little boy and Grandmother. We had planned the day for months....

Unfortunately, that can happen sometimes on port days. :o

I've done this! I had a spa treatment with a facial, hot stone massage, exfoliation and body massage then I went and soaked in the hot tub with a glass of wine and finally took a nap! It was a lovely day!

That was what I was thinking might be a regular occurrence BUT then I'm thinking why would they do that when the ship is in use? They should schedule maintenance like that on a separate day in between scheduled cruises. I feel so awful for you. Sounds like our luck.

I get the whole maintenance thing, but seriously, what would it have hurt to bend the rules. Bad decision Carnival employees!!

On our last cruise, we had brought our 4-year old grandson, and it was his first cruise. Our only port was Nassau, and I've been there many times. I knew that I did not want to go through the hassle of taking him off the ship, and he was happy in Camp Carnival. I didn't mind staying on board while he was in camp. It gave me a chance to enjoy the ship by myself. It was so nice--the buffets were manageable and the ship was fairly quiet.

Nothing wrong with staying on board but the Uxmal ruins in Progresso are breathtaking and a really cool thing to see. I've been on lots of cruises and done lots of excursions and Uxmal is definitely in my top 3 of all time. Just something else to think about.

We always stay on board at least once. Food places are open, use the slide with no lines and the pools barely have anyone in them. Once we had the Serenity Pool all to ourselves for 2 hours.

Typically there are no days between scheduled cruises. When a ship arrives at embarkation port, the crew quickly turn the ship over and ready her for a new cruise that same day.
