As an American we do understand this tendency of fellow Americans to think that our dollar works everywhere. But alas. it is just not true. And in some places that will accept a US Dollar, they will give you an awful exchange rate (discounted by 20% or more). So do yourself a favor and when you are in Europe (or most other places) get some local currency (easily obtained out of an ATM) and spend wisely :). And you might ask yourself would a NYC taxi accept Euros, or Yuan?

Hi,

We will be arriving Santorini on April 22 on Oosterdam. If we do not take the ship's excursions, I believe we will have to take tender to the Thira port. After we get off the tender boat, where can we take a taxi, and will we have to wait for long for one?

Any idea how much if we want to keep the taxi for 4-5 hours?

thank you.

Good questions. If you tender in to the port below Fira (which you will do unless you take a ship excursion) you only have 3 options to get up to Fira. The cable car (best option), the donkeys, or walking up the donkey train (plus some steps). Once at the top, you are in the city of Fira. If you walk back a few blocks and towards your right you will eventually get to the main taxi area which is located adjacent to the local bus station. Since just about everyone speaks English, when you get to the top just ask a local (or experienced cruiser) and they will point you in the right direction. We would assume that a taxi would want at least 200€ for 4-5 hours and you can certainly negotiate. On the other hand, you could rent a small car for about 50€ for the entire day.

Thank you Hank for your reply.

So if we were to book a local tour excursion, we would still need to take the cable car up to Thira? They cannot pick us up from where we get off the tender? So are we better off going with ship's excursions?

How easy to take bus from Thira to Oia, and how long to travel?

Thank you.

Indeed you need the cable car to go up( and down) . Tenderdock is at the bottom of the cable car and Fira is the station at the top.
