Reformed alcohol smuggler seeks methods to drink cheaply

I did this exact thing recently and haven't been given a life sentence. It's not the worst thing in the world.

I don't think anyone called it "the worst thing in the world." But that's not a very good criteria for determining what is appropriate. It's sort of like going to a buffet restaurant, paying for only one person, and having others join you in eating, without paying. That's not the worst thing in the world, either, but it's dishonest and a form of theft. There are, of course, worse things in the world than dishonesty and theft, so if your goal in life is to not be the worst person in the world, you're meeting expectations.

Theft or no theft, with the money I spent on this trip, I owed it to myself to cut a corner. It harmed no one expect the morality police.

Hey I'm on the vision of the seas , right now. And they just came out with 10 drinks for $85. Also the 5/7 wine package has returned!

Cj

Is $85 the price after gratuity is added or before? On Liberty last week it was $67 + gratuity (which came to just over $79 total).

I'll admit, this option definitely crossed my mind. I ultimately decided against it, but more out of not wanting to have to worry about being stealthy about it. And I'm sure my wife didn't mind me not having an open bar available to me for four days straight.

I understand why it's such a gray area though. My wife isn't a big drinker, so at worst we'd be looking at one drink a day under that plan (and honestly, it'd probably wind up being closer to two a day). If RCI had a way of "signing off" on that, they'd probably get more total money out of me, as without it, we'll just drink less and spend less. For similar situations, I can see how the passenger could morally justify it that way. The problem becomes, not all situations are similar, and policing that would be next to impossible for RCI.

There are several opportunities to indulge in complimentary drinks, one being the champagne art auction you already mentioned. Another is the Captain's Gala evening, which is the first Formal Night. Wherever it is held, there is complimentary champagne and perhaps other alcoholic choices. As well, the Welcome Back C&A party offers free alcoholic drinks.

Having said that, and given all the replies you've received, perhaps you will find you won't be drinking as much as you think you might because you have your "young son" with you. I mean, if it's a family vacation, you may want to concentrate on that aspect of it. :) Family is precious.

Enjoy your cruise.

Karen, you hit the nail on the head. It's a family vacation with the three of us, so I don't really want to be anything more than slightly buzzed in front of my son. We'll have him in the kids club after dinner most nights, so I don't mind drinking a bit more in the evenings. It wouldn't hurt to have a running start, either, so the Captain's Gala and Welcome Back Party would be good options for us.

One question though - Do they even do those events on four night cruises?

Yes. Good, I'm glad my comments didn't upset you. :) I just wanted to offer perspective from another angle.

Honestly, I was in a hurry to post before work, and I missed the part about it being a 4 night cruise. I'm sorry. :( I actually don't know - we have been taking longer cruises in recent years so I hope someone else can help you out on that.

May I ask.....what is the 5/7 wine package???

Either a 5 or 7 bottle wine package. Royal has discontinued the fleetwide wine packages, but each ship can offer their version of a wine package. You pay a fixed price and get to choose your 5 or 7 bottles from a short list of wines.

In June, I was on the Dream.. I know different company... but, I played and spent a lot at the casino... on the third day my sister in law won 15 drinks per day.. on the fourth day, I won the same... I was giving drinks away... so, maybe spend in one area and get compensated in another... casino/ drinks.. great combination.. they want you drunk to keep spending in the casino...this is true on every ship...:D

Change cruise lines. :D

Have someone else mule it in for you.

Buy the drink package for yourself and use it to get your wife her drinks. I do it every cruise and have never had a problem
Amusing answers . Not necessarily helpful but very amusing . :)

Babyblu, that's exactly why I chose to buy the drink package, it covers all drinks including water.. I think it was $57 per day... 20% off... once you get a morning special coffee, morning mimosa, or fresh juice, morning water, a drink for lunch, after lunch drink and water, during dinner a drink, and a couple drinks after dinner... that pays for it.. heck,: I don't go to bed until sunrise...

One of the nice things about Royal Caribbean is that not everyone in the cabin.has to get the drink package. I am concerned that with such blatant disregard for the rules they will go back to demanding everyone in a cabin gets the drink package (or no one gets it). The rule is one person, one package.

I don't think RCI is so naive to think that the sharing isn't going on already. If anything, it's likely already accounted for in the price of the drink package, to an extremely small degree. I'm sure they've accepted the minimal amount of sharing that does occur, and chosen to focus their efforts on stopping the blatant violators. It's not much different than the local police department letting cars speed 5 mph above the speed limit, but pulling over and ticketing the one going 20 mph above the limit.

Personally, I'm at that stage in my life where I prefer everything to be on the up and up, which is why I started this thread looking for deals offered on the ship. But I understand that other people have different circumstances, and that's between them and the cruise line. If someone with the package wants to allow their spouse a sip of a drink to see if they like it before ordering one of their own, I'm not judging them for that. And anyone who would pass judgment for such a minor infraction - well, I probably wouldn't want to drink with that person anyway! It's all shades of gray from there - just a matter of where each individual chooses to draw the line.

I totally understand this topic warranting further discussion, but I respectfully ask that anyone wishing to continue the conversation start it up as a new thread, so as not to derail the original intent of this posting - both for my sake, and the sake of anyone who comes along later looking for info and deals on cheap drinks. Thanks!
