NCL Tweet

New to NCL... sailed most other lines numerous times and this is the first NCL sailing that I've come a crossed that hits our itinerary drive. A 14 nighter on the BA for this coming fall. Loved the itinerary!!!

So, here I am... back to becoming active on CC so I can learn about NCL, join my roll call, etc. My concern is that I've been reading quite a few bad comments/reviews of the BA... I am not a person who buys into bad reviews as I am very aware of "cranky people" and/or "people who think they are entitled".

My biggest concern is that quite a few people have mentioned "unhappy crew on the BA". That is probably the one thing that would ruin my trip. I'm a middle of the road kinda person, just go with the flow and always make the best of anything, but to pay so much money for several cabins and be with miserable people for 14 days would not be a good thing :(

My concern grew after seeing a party on my roll call cancel their booking due to bad reviews.

So, last night I tweeted NCL... the power of Twitter is phenomenal with Corporate America. Well, this morning they answered me, asking me to message them.

How do I sum up the concerns in one message back to them?

Feedback welcome (encouraged)...

Thanks,

Lori

In my opinion, you're having problems composing your thoughts because the concern is one of a subjective nature.

What are you going to ask them? "Hey, I heard the BA crew are all unhappy. Is the crew of the BA unhappy?"

What would be NCL's response? "Yes. We are aware of the crew's continued dissatisfaction. Internal employee issues are being worked through. We apologize for their unfavorable disposition and hope to have their moods improved soon."

It's ridiculous.

Even if you manage to articulate your message, NCL's response will be of a canned variety. Something along the lines of "the crew works hard to make your vacation memorable!" and so forth.

To me, messaging NCL about this would be utterly pointless.

I'm not sure that you would accomplish anything doing that. Unless you have issues specific to your cruise experience what would they say to you? Every corporation gets some bad reviews. As a consumer you can decide how much credence you put in to those.

Disagree 100% - I'm guessing you are not a Tweeter, which is a good thing I guess.

Not sure what my use of twitter has to do with this, but whatever.

Why do I bother with this place?

Don't worry about what you read. Some people are just unhappy and very negative all of the time. You will have a great cruise on NCL and I have never ran into any unhappy crew on any cruise I've taken.

Go have fun and stay positive! :)

I've been wondering the same thing lately. CC isn't what it used to be, that's for sure.

I'd just say on your message back to them that you have read a few reviews where reviewers have said the crew was not happy, not smiling and if they can't guarantee you that this is not true, you are going to cancel your cruise.

Thank you NLH. I'm composing my response now. Luckily I am limited in characters so will be keeping it short - LOL.

I know that they can't guarantee everyone will smile (I'm not an idiot)... but I did want them to realize that there is alot of slamming on CC which may or may not hurt business. Then again, CC is not the same as it was 10 years ago...

has developed into the prime medium to hold corporations and businesses hostage.

I agree with the poster, exactly what would be your anticipated answer that you are looking for?

" We guarantee that every crew member will be Happy, punishment for failure to comply will include discipline up to and including keel hauling"

Was the intent of your tweet to just let them know that some people on boards have stated that many crewmembers are or seem unhappy. if so you accomplished that already.

It could be that they responded in hope that you had some first hand useful knowledge that could help them out. My guess is they were not aware that you are looking forward to your first NCL cruise, and was simply commenting on what you heard, but have never experienced.

People on cruises have different expectations, some who expect that they get kissed on both cheeks, feel slighted because a crewmember is not happy about complying.

I think I once saw a post on social media from a cruise line crew member who was pointing out that some people on board seem like they are not doing everything they can to enjoy the experience. Wait, no that was just a dream.

It seems you do not have a complaint, or an actual experience to let them know about, but just wanted to let them know that there are some around who actually believe it. And as far as people cancelling their booking due to a perception of what may happen, shakes my head. Remember you saw it on the Internet, so it must be true! Just because they state that was the reason, does not make it so...

I bet there is not a single forum on here for any of the cruise lines, that does not have at least one complaint about something. Sometime legit and sometimes, not so much.

Exactly what type of vacation can you go on where you are guaranteed 100% smiling faces ?

My bottom line take, is I think you should be more interested in not booking a cruise that has a predominant amount of people on it that always need to be complaining about something. They seem to far exceed the number of unhappy crew.....and that would really ruin my experience.

Just my two cents on it.

We have spoken to crew on the Miami-based ships about this, and they have told us they do not like sailing from NY. They are basically treated like crap, and that is why they are so miserable. It is not the crew - it's the passengers. Be nice to the crew, treat them with respect, and I am sure you will receive smiles.

The people complaining are probably the cause of the problem  I am from the area. I know exactly what type of attitudes they (the crew) are encountering. No, not everyone does this, but it happens often. Exactly why we will not sail from NY. This will tick off a lot of people, but it doesn't make it inaccurate.

I was on the Breakaway in March '16 and had a Meet & Great with the officers.... the Hotel Director (Prem, I think) mentioned that they are aware of Cruise Critic and they do read it. During the sign in... they actually ask for your CC user name and pay attention to the posts you make.

You may want to just remind them to visit Cruise Critic a little more frequently to get the "temperature" of the customers

Another thing that I found.... if you do have an issue on the ship and visit the Guest Services Desk \ Fill out the comment card... make sure to include your Cruise Critic username. It was referenced by the Manager when I was contacted with an issue I had.

We've sailed the BA twice and both times we encountered absolutely no issues. The crew was wonderful. What I have encountered; however, is rude passengers. Last month we actually made a game of noting the petty complaints we heard - a prime example "I am extremely disappointed in this ship, you have mirrors on the stairways rather than pictures."

I'm not a tweeter so can you explain what you were hoping to accomplish with your tweet? They are aware of Cruise Critic and can't guarantee you a happy, smiling crew. I'm not being snarky - I honestly don't get it.

Exactly like examples we were given by crew. It's ridiculous. I hate seeing people treated like that.

Good luck to OP. :D

We tweeted NCL a little over a year ago about our first hand experience directly, smoke in the BA casino, and, yes - we spend a considerable amount of time there as players, not just passing thru, not based on indirect feedback or hearsays. That was after we filled out the post-cruise e-survey online, 2 years in a row.

Still waiting for acknowledgement ...

It does sound like NCL's social media department is working a little differently, again. They used to come to CC directly to acknowledge & directly address some of the issues, selectively - of course. Now, it's been total "radio silence" for what it's worth.

Don't over-estimate, just saying - it is what it is ... this is a forum for critics, folks do agree to disagree ... cheering on all sides ;)

I have sailed both the Breakaway and the Gem out of NY. The crew on the Gem seemed happier and were more friendly but I think it had to do with the size of the ship and the ratio of passengers to crew. That said I still thought the crew on the BA were great and we are sailing again on BA. I have seen people from all over rude to crew not just New Yorkers.

and in defense of the crew.... if I am ready to pull my hair out after spending a minimal amount of time with passengers who are rude, entitled, disrespectful and nasty to other passengers..... the "abuse" some of these crew members tolerate is absolutely amazing and embarrassing. So a couple looks or a sparky remark by the crew gets a pass from me.

I just got off the breakaway two weeks ago. I didn't read any reviews prior to our trip so I didn't realize all the negatives comments regarding the crew. I will say this, my DH and I love NCL and we were actually surprised on the BA how rude some (not all) of the crew were. Never came across that before. Of course there were also great crew members too. I am not sure why they were miserable but it was very surprising. I wouldn't say I won't sail on BA again because of that I won't sail again because I personally didn't like the ship. Of course this is just my opinion but I don't believe or at least what I saw, was the passengers were being rude it was obvious some of the crew members don't like their job very much.

Thank you for those of you with positive and respectful comments. I am back on firm ground now and looking forward to the BA. I've reaffirmed that there are people who are just cranky, miserable, unhappy, etc. This is not me and I've decided to skip over the BA reviews.

On a positive note, I did respond back to NCL's tweet and I received a speedy response that they are confident that I will enjoy my time on the BA and offered me (at no charge) the UCP internet package for my 14 day trip. It does not appear on my ncl yet but they assured me it will soon. I will also print the message from them to ensure it's all squared away on the ship.

Since they gave you the internet package, could you take the time on your cruise to let us all know your feelings about how the crew is?
