Carnival Sunshine - April 16th - Diary and Review

She said loudly and quite firm... "I will do that for you" Steve said, thats fine..and she said again "I WILL DO THAT FOR YOU". It was strange indeed. Needless to say the rest of the dinner was a bit uncomfortable.

Wow that would be awkward. We were on this same cruise, so can't wait to read someone else's opinion on everything. I had ordered bottle of wine one night, my husband doesn't drink it but he always refills my glass for me, and the waiter walked by and saw him doing that and responded oh "that's my job, let me know next time", but he laughed and we laughed along with him. I think if my husband had been addressed with that tone he probably would have responded back, lol. But in reality it's the waiter's responsibility to pour the glasses and keep them filled so they were the ones in the wrong not your husband. Hope the rest of your cruise went well.:)

Sunday afternoon... Toilet Saga .. (part 1)

After our afternoon relaxing, Matthew and I decided to play some Trivia. Today's offering was 50's 60's music. He had played Movie trivia earlier that day, but wanted to play with me this time. I am a music trivia junkie, I admit and have always done pretty well .. but 50's and 60's were not my strong suit! Trivia was played on the Ocean Plaza on Deck 5, near the Red Frog Pub. this was a great place for Trivia contests. We really enjoyed this round of music hits, and did quite well. We got 38 of 40 questions.. but nonetheless a very smart couple got them all! No Ship on a Stick this time!!

Matt and I went back to the cabin for a short break and ran into my Mom. She had gone to the Casino for a bit and browsed the shops. I used the bathroom and then we were going to go walk up on deck and meet Steve and Allison at the slides. As I was leaving the room, however, I heard a weird water noise coming out of the bathroom. I thought I had left the sink running. BUT NO!!!!

When I opened up the door, there was water POURING OUT OF THE BACK OF THE TOILET!!! GUSHING OUT. NON STOP. Water everywhere in the bathroom. I would say I calmly handled it, but that is not really the case. I screamed for my 17 year old to play master plumber. Or better the little dutch boy trying to stop a leak. Mom rushed to find ANYONE who could help. We tried to use towels to block the water, and I called Guest Services... after being on hold for WAY TOO LONG.

Mom found a supervisor from Housekeeping. The guy who walks around with a clipboard. He called for help immediately and then we then got all the towels (including the beach towels) out of BOTH CABINS and tried to create a dam to stop water from flowing into the cabin. FINALLY a plumber arrived and tried to stop the water, but had a hard time. Finally, he had to turn off all the water into the cabin.

By the time he did this, water had flowed into the cabin soaking the carpet. He had to totally pull apart the toilet, eventually fixing the part that shuts the water off when you flush. It was stuck in the open position.

Now.. this happened about 4:30PM. An hour before we were going to get ready for Elegant Night. The plumber was very nice and efficient and did what he could to fix the toilet. As he left, he told me that Housekeeping would be by immediately to help clean up. He was gone about 15 minutes when Steve walked in. Imagine the horror he saw - soaked carpet, towels everywhere, water STILL Soaking the floor in the bathroom ... and NO HOUSKEEPING. We called Guest Services, who told us they were on their way.

NO. They weren't. We waited. At this point, we wanted to get ready for dinner. We needed showers. We could easily use the shower in our other room... but we had no towels!!! We called again. NOTHING. Finally, after almost an hour, Steve marched down to Guest Services pretty upset. He was firm, and demanded that someone come and visit our cabin immediately. They needed to see the mess. Sofia from Guest Services came right away. Once she saw the chaos, she apologized for housekeeping and made a phone call. In a very short time, the Asst. Head of Housekeeping was in our room. We were angry. We really just wanted towels. The mess could be cleaned up when we were at dinner. He got on his phone and we had six clean towels within five minutes.

I explained to him about the drain issue that I had that morning. He said again, it was because of the rocking of the ship. Finally, we were able to get ready for dinner. The plan was for Housekeeping to clean our room when we were at dinner. A blower would need to be our room to clean the carpet.

The one thing that struck me, is that we heard the same line from three people that afternoon. "We have 1500 cabins. This type of thing happens". That is FINE. I get that. But the slow response from Housekeeping to follow the plumber was upsetting. I felt they were just waiting for our normal steward to start his shift and they had no plan in sending another crew.

One thing, however... I want to make sure I emphasise this. NOTHING was ever damaged. It was an inconvenience, yes. But at this time, we were happy with the apology for slow service from the Assistant Manager of Housekeeping and we moved on to the rest of our day.

Because of this event, we were delayed for dinner that evening. It was elegant night, and it was close to 7pm by the time we were able to go to dinner. There was a line at the sign in station on Deck 5. This was indeed a very popular time to go to dinner. Our nerves were a bit on edge, and we asked for different servers. In order to get someone different, we were told we would have a half hour wait. By that time, we just wanted to sit down and eat, so we were seated at the same table as the previous evening.

Dinner was very good this night. One thing I did ask for, however, was an appetizer portion of Spaghetti Carbonara (something that was always offered in our prior cruises). With American Table, however, pasta entrees are no longer offered as appetizers. So I was given a full portion, which I split with Matt. I had the Prime Rib, cooked perfectly. Steve had Sea Bass, which he really enjoyed. He asked for a Lobster Tail to be added to the dish, and they complied.

One thing I realize now? No pictures from Elegant Night. I was completely stressed over the whole thing, I did not even bring my camera!!!

After dinner, Allison went to Camp Carnival. Steve, Mom and I went to the Liquid Lounge for the STUDIO VIP Show. A tribute to Disco. I admit I do enjoy the shows. But they have not really been a priority the last few cruises. But I know my Mom and I both love Disco, so we decided to go. It was GOOD. Was it GREAT? No. Not really. Three of the 8 performers were really good. Gone are the days of a male and female singer and 12 dancers. The shows now feature 4 males, 4 females... all who sing and dance. The songs were fun, and the show was over in 40 minutes.

IMG_1321_zpsemh6dxj0.jpg

IMG_1320_zpskqmp8z0r.jpg

After the show, we hung around for a while, walking and exploring. Mom and I eventually made our way back to the cabin. (Which had a new Air Blower doing its thing). Steve stayed out, hanging out the Red Frog Pub, until 1am, when he picked up Allison From Night Owls. Night Owls is a 3 hour party for Camp Carnival Kids. Featuring Singing,Dancing, Games, Prizes etc. She certainly had a blast!!

Finally, our night of drama was over, and it was time to go to bed and get ready for Sea Day #2!!

MONDAY - Sea Day #2

You know how when you cruise, you sometimes have one day when you have NO IDEA what you did? Well this was this day.

But, I can tell you .. that once again it was filled with a bit of Drama.

Once again, I woke up earlier than the rest of the family and ventured out to the gym. The plan was for me to go to the gym, then get the family for breakfast and go from there. But this day, I did not go out until well after 8 and I got back around 9:15.

When I returned, I could tell something was up.... and I knew right away from Steve's face.. that I missed something big.

Yup... the toilet exploded AGAIN.

Luckily, this time, there were two room stewards right outside the door. All the towels once again went down and somehow, one was able to go into the toilet from the outside compartment and stop the water. Plumbers called, but this time, Steve went down to Guest Services right away and made contact to the Head of Guest Services .. who was WONDERFUL. She apologized and then sent the HEAD PLUMBER, HEAD Housekeeper and Head of Guest Services down to our room.

They offered to move our room a few times. BUT.. because we had connecting cabins, that would not have been the most ideal situation. We did not want to move.. we just wanted the situation FIXED. Everyone at Guest Services knew about our room, and we could tell they wanted to make it right. The head of Guest Services gave Steve her Cell Phone number, if anything would happen again. At that time, they gave us the Key to a room six doors down, so we could use that shower, etc. She also gave us a few drink tickets as a token gesture.

This time, they needed to SHAMPOO and STEAM CLEAN our entire rug. The blower was once again in our room.

During this time, I was able to take a shower in my Mom's room. Mom, Steve and Allison went to breakfast. Matt waited for me, and by the time I was done with my shower, we decided to try something different and we went to BRUNCH. I liked Brunch. Matt and I were seated in a table for two, but very close to two other couples. We all ordered together, served together, etc. By the time the main course arrived, we were all talking to each other. It was nice to hear different perspectives about their adventures so far. I had fresh Fruit, and Raisin Bran encrusted French Toast, with Turkey Bacon. It was SO GOOD. Matt.. fully taking advantage of the Brunch Menu had (only a 17 year could handle this)... Caesar Salad, Mac and Cheese with Chicken, and FRUIT LOOP French Toast. GROSS!! He LOVED his selections!! Brunch service however, was slow and relaxed. Do not go to Brunch expecting to get in and out. Items are cooked to order and the expectations are relaxed breakfast here.

It was close to noon by the time brunch ended. We spent the afternoon at the pool, listening to the music, enjoying the sun, which was peeking through, and just enjoying being on a cruise. Matt, Mom and I played One Hit Wonders Trivia in the afternoon. I once again got 38 of 40 and thought I would have a good chance to bring home a Ship on a Stick... but no! Someone got just one wrong and won. That game was my favorite all week!!

You are not going to believe what happened after Trivia. YEP.. I get back to the room .... and Steve had taken a shower. This was the first time the shower had been used since I flooded it out the previous morning. We had been using the other room's shower the entire time. Well, the drain issue WAS NOT the ship rocking... it was an actual problem!! Yep, Steve flooded out the bathroom AGAIN. This time, he called the Guest Service Manager on her Cell, and we had service right away. They had to take apart the entire drain, which was clogged. It was really getting to be a laughing matter now.

I have to say however, and I want to make sure I repeat this. Guest Services were FANTASTIC. They were apologetic, but I actually think they were appreciative that we were upset, but not crazy. We were not looking for a free cruise, we just wanted to be known that we were inconvenienced a few times, and wanted it fixed.

The afternoon was a blur, and before we know it, it was dinner time. I was not feeling well during dinner, and I hardly remember it. I do know that Allison went to Camp Carnival and we hung out at the Lobby Bar, enjoying the music and people watching. Steve picked her up at 10 and they went to the Blue Iguana Fiesta on the Lido Deck. Some dancing, some beads, and a lot of fun.

Tuesday - APRIL 19th - St. Marteen

Our two days at sea were over, and we were about to start our 4 days in a row Port of Call Journey. Stops in order are St. Marteen, St. Kitts, San Juan, then finally Grand Turk.

This was our fourth time visiting St. Marteen. We have been on an island tour, visited Maho Beach to see the Airplanes and also Visited Orient Beach. One thing we do love about St. Marteen is the fun shopping, and the cheap beers along the waterfront. This year, we decided just to take the Water Taxi to town, walk along the beach front, and rent a couple chairs and spend time in the beach there. After the beach, we would venture off to the shops to browse and perhaps look for some inexpensive souvenirs.

For some reason, this is the only Fun Times that I do not have to refer to, so everything here is by memory. We had a quick breakfast on the Lido Deck, and got dressed for a day at the beach and ventured out. Folks who had tours had already left, so there was no line to leave the ship. We were the only ship in port that day, so there was a relaxed atmosphere getting off. After walking into the Cruise Port area, we took a few pictures, then made our way to the Water Taxi.

DSCN0866_zpsixtzxfjt.jpg

DSCN0867_zps6ihzmudy.jpg

The Water Taxi is $7.00 for an all you can ride bracelet. We ended up just going up and back, so I am not sure if it was worth it. But at least we had transportation to Phillipsburg, the main town and shopping area. The water taxi holds about 50 people and we waited for it to fill up before we took off for the ten minute ride.

DSCN0869_zpsekgjrpzs.jpg

DSCN0872_zps3xkmogg4.jpg

When we arrived, we were approached 100 times IMMEDIATELY. Would we like a tour? No thank you. Would we we like a tour? No. Thank you. Would we like to go to the beach? No Thank you. Would you like your hair braided? No Thank you. All polite and firm no works best.

I knew from reading the boards, that we could bargain for Chairs and Drinks at many of the establishments along the waterfront. I also had read to walk a ways, and the further from the Taxi, the better deals. Eventually, after checking out some prices, I was offered 4 chairs with two umbrellas for $30. I bargained it down to $25 with 6 Drinks included. 2 Beers, 2 Sodas and 2 Waters, it was a deal. We were right across from the Honkey Tonk Bar, and we also received Free WiFi Access, making Matt a HAPPY KID!!

DSCN0873_zpsdmrsj4qq.jpg

The beach itself was great for us. Not beautiful, but a lot to look at. There were Jet Skis, Banana Boats, and a lot of people just having a great time. We enjoyed our low key adventure here. We did bring snacks off the ship (Cereal Boxes, Goldfish from Home, etc) as well as bottled water and soda.

St. Marteen Continued...

While on the Beach, we were approached dozens of times from Street Vendors selling everything from Hats, Shirts, Jewelry, Drinks, etc. Although I told Mom not to entertain these vendor, of course she did!! Once one sees you are paying attention, they all come!!

Mom ended up buying a bag, (paying too much)... and a beach coverup shirt for Allison caught my eye. She wanted $20. I wanted to pay $10. I was not moving, because I was fine if it was more than 10.. didn't need it that bad. First she said 15. Then 12. When I said no, she walked away. Two minutes later, she came back and said, OK, Give me $10. And I happily did. The shirt is not only adorable on Allison, later that afternoon I saw it in all the shops.... yep, for 10 bucks. :) This is a great place for beach bags, hats, coverups etc. It is also a great place for jewelry, but we were not in the market this cruise.

IMG_1314_zpsgfl4xkgy.jpg

In the afternoon, Matt took our wet towels and ventured back to the ship. Mom, Steve, Allison and I went shopping. Allison found some bracelets for her friends (woven for $1.00 each), I found another coverup, this time for me, Mom found something too. The festive atmosphere, with folks sitting in the beach bars, music playing, etc makes this place a real fun stop.

We went back to the ship via the water taxi (a short wait ). Even though we had had snacks and no lunch, we knew we would take advantage of Any Time dining and go to dinner very early. We returned to our room with our friend the Blower STILL drying our carpet. But we are happy to report that our bathroom plumbing issues were over.

We moved to the other side of the ship for Dinner this night and had a great Head Waiter, Thomas. We would be assigned to him for three more nights. Dinner remained GOOD, but never blew us away this cruise. We found offerings, especially desserts not that appealing.

We had a lot of fun this night, spending time at the Atrium Bar participating in the MOTOWN TRIVIA Singalong. What a blast. Donkey sure does a great job getting everyone involved in a real fun event. They do not score the trivia, but I got 19 of 20 songs right and it was fun just to sing along and laugh with everyone who attended!!

Thats it for this day... I will be back tomorrow for our favorite day of the week. St. Kitts!!

Hi Catrin I met you and your family on the Splendor a few years back, so I am really enjoying your review , also I am doing the same itinerary in two weeks on the Conquest, you all look great!

Gail

Hiya Gale.. great to see you here. I hope you and your family are well. We were on the Conquest last year. I love that class of ship a lot more than the Sunshine. I hope you have a great cruise!!

Can't wait to hear about St. Kitts! We've never been and are looking forward to that port the most on our 8 day leg of our B2B. I'm trying to figure out something inexpensive to do there.

I will have time tomorrow for all the pics and commentary.. but as a preview, we went to the Marriott for the day and had the best time!!

Hi. My husband and I met you on the shuttle and were in line to board with you and your family. Being alone we spent a lot of our sea days in the serenity pool area which we absolutely love. Sorry about your plumbing. I did have a small leaky toilet issue which I got fixed and a balcony door handle that was stuck and needed to be replaced. I think that there were a lot of plumbing and leaking issues that needed to be taken care of and that the dry dock scheduled for early May was too late.

I have traveled on Carnival for 15 Aprils straight and this ship is a favorite as far as the restaurants and serenity area but it definitely had some issues I have never seen before. Fortunately my two problems were fixed quickly and our cruise was awesome. We chose to eat at JIJI's and Cucina del Capitano and Bonsai three of the nights and the rest in the dining room. I liked the American Table menu as it allowed for sides and our servers were great. I would choose anytime dining the next cruise though and did notice that the waitstaff was smaller than in the past and had to work even harder to keep up with the tables. Looking forward to reading more. In St Martin we did an excursion that wasn't through Carnival and rented a small Boston Whaler on the lagoon for three hours. We had done this two years ago when on the Sunshine and it is a great way to spend time in St Martin. We have now booked a land vacation there for next year to change things up a bit. It's an island we want to have a chance to see more of and we visited the resort while we were there last week. I think it will be less hectic and more relaxing.

Really enjoying your review! Not letting the plumbing problem ruin your cruise is admirable :) I would have been upset with it too, but going bonkers isn't going to help anything either.

Marking my spot so I can follow the rest of it!

Sorry to hear about your bathroom problems! On both of our Freedom cruises we have had bathroom problems. On both cruises the bathroom smelled like sewer at random times throughout the day. The steward tried his best to spray the bathroom. On one of the cruises the shower would not drain twice and we had to call for someone to fix it. Guest Services was amazing and gave us two free drink coupons, we were thankful but all we cared about was getting the problems fixed.

Wednesday - April 18th

aka.. Our Favorite day.... St. Kitts

In 16 prior cruises, we had never been to St. Kitts. A part of the reason why we picked this cruise was to visit somewhere new! In planning however, we had leaned towards a 4x4 excursion, very similar to one we took in Aruba last year. A tour of the island, photo stops and a brief beach stop. But, as the cruise got closer, everyone at home was kind of wishy washy on taking a tour. While we love the islands, they DO look the same after a while, and we realize that our best days are days where we can have fun relaxing at a beach or pool.

In doing some research online, I came across a thread where folks were talking about the Marriott resort at St. Kitts - and a day pass. The grounds looked beautiful and I thought about spending a day here. Once I showed the pictures to the family.. they were SOLD. Allison, while loves the beach, absolutely LOVES swimming in big pools. Matt asked right away.. "Do they have wifi?" and Steve said... "sure, whatever you decide is fine". So that was our plan.

Here are the pictures of the resort from THEIR website. This is what sold me.

st-kitts-marriott_zps6q0nvukm.jpg

895163_305_z_zpsohmc5dqz.jpg

Our plan was to wake up quite early, get room service breakfast, and venture out as soon as the ship docked. We put out our room service card the night before, and exactly at 7am, breakfast was served. I did have enough time, after getting ready, to run upstairs and grab some bacon and a few snacks that we saved for later. (Ziploc bags are a must!)

We watched the ship arrive from our room, and as soon as we saw people were being let off, we ventured our way out.

Immediately, we liked St. Kitts. The port area was full of shopping, and we would make sure we had enough time later to explore.

DSCN0878_zpsobravc7k.jpg

But.. we did not have the best weather day. Clouds overhead, we were just praying to the weather Gods that today would not be a washout. (There is that coverup on Allison that I bought in St. Maarten!! She wore it the rest of the week!). We walked through the village, and followed the signs to the Taxis. We did see someone with a Monkey and I warned the kids.. "Stay away from the Monkeys", which we did. A taxi driver approached us and we asked how much to the Marriott. Make sure you ask for a price up front. Because Allison was a kid,he charged us $12 one way. The taxi was a comfortable and picturesque van ride. As we turned the corner and he pointed out where we were going, we were already excited for our day.

DSCN0879_zpsfdflxccz.jpg

We arrived and I approached the registration desk. This hotel did not accept advanced reservations for the Day Pass. The cost was $35 per person. It included all entrance fees to the beach and pool as well as use of the washrooms. When reading, I did read that there was one person who, instead of Day passes, actually rented a DAY ROOM. Knowing there were five of us, I was wondering what this cost would be compared to the Day Passes. She looked up the cost, and told us that a DAY ROOM would be $125 plus Taxes, or $155. It included passes for four people. I asked about the fact there were five of us, and she saw Allison and she said, that's fine, she's 10, right? Sure she is.

So, with that, we now had a room. Which excited ONE person in particular, Mr. Matthew. His favorite show, Better Call Saul had ended on Sunday night, and his priority was to watch the ending episode. Pathetic, yes, but hey he is 17, what can I say. He had already done his research and knew that this show was actually a Netflix show on St. Kitts, so he was all set. The room they gave us was in a building right next to the beach and pool, so we went there first. We used the safe in the room to store our wallets, and it was nice to use a private bathroom. Matt stayed behind to watch his show, (while crawling into the plush bed) and we ventured to the beach. With the room, we also got four towel tickets. We used the Marriott Towels at the beach, and kept our Carnival towels for later.

DSCN0881_zpsl8jgxitg.jpg

Walking down to the beach, we knew we one of the first people to arrive.. there was less than 10 people on the entire beach... and it was beautiful. Cabanas with chairs and tables are lined all along the beach. We did not have a hard time chosing one and we settled in. Right away, Steve and Allison went in!!

The water, while wavy, was warm. It was not rocky at all, and was completely enjoyable.

After Steve and Allison played in the water, he and I went for a walk along the beach, to the left way past the Marriott, and then back again to the left until the end of the property. There was a truck on property combing the sand, removing all the seaweed. The beach was immaculate. Further down, we saw signs for Donkey Rides and a few other properties.

This place was a stress eliminator. We loved our walk and even though the clouds were looming overhead, we were so happy here. After our walk, I went in the water with Allison and Mom.. and we enjoyed swimming, talking and just relaxing at the beach. And that was only the first HOUR!!

When we first got to the beach, one thing Allison noticed immediately was the Volleyball Net. This kid LOVES volleyball! So she and I went back up to the Towel Hut, where we noticed they had games, floaty mats, etc. We asked if they had any volleyballs, and we gave her our room number and borrowed one! (another small perk from renting a room!). We went back to the room, got Matt, who by this time was just finishing his show, took a five minute break and headed back to the beach for a game of Beach Volleyball.

IMG_1109_zpsm6nh4mwe.jpg

After our game, Allison asked to go check out the pool. Steve and Allison went to find the pool.. and Mom, matt and I hung out at the Cabana, reading and just relaxing. During this entire time, there were at most 20 people on the entire beach. Steve and Allison were gone a LONG TIME... and I said to Mom..."I bet they aren't coming back" - so I took a walk to find them. Sure enough, there was Allison, all happy playing in the pool. Steve had found himself five lounge chairs, and was happily relaxed. He said "Its about time!.. come up here, its awesome"... So I went back to the beach, gathered Mom and Matt and we packed up and went to the pool.

DSCN0890_zpsxuptifdf.jpg

The pool was beautiful. Perfect temperature with a swim up bar. There was music playing in the background. Every chair had an adjustable canopy. We all went in the pool for a while and enjoyed this area. By this time, I was getting into my book on my Kindle.. and I just loved sitting here reading and doing NOTHING!!!!!

We had brought snacks and sodas with us (love the Granola cereal boxes for snacks!), but the kids were getting hungry for lunch. The easiest thing for us is Pizza, and there is a pizza shack right at the pool. We split a large pizza (charged to the room) and that made everyone happy again!!

We really did nothing else all day. Allison asked about a floating matt, but they wanted $10 for it, and since we only had an hour left, we said no.

Before we knew it, it was time to go. We went back to the room one last time, dried off, etc. Handed in our towels then checked out. Taxis were stationed right at the hotel, and we once again negotiated $12 return to the ship. Once we got back to the ship, Matt headed right back with our bags, and the rest of us took our time in the multiple shops and did some Tshirt shopping, as well as our free Diamonds International Bracelet and Charm for Allison. Mom was able to buy another bottle of wine as well. When we arrived, we realized another ship had arrived as well.

DSCN0894_zpsvoqae0ku.jpg

DSCN0896_zpsygfzwwpg.jpg

When we got back, we once again decided to shower, relax in the cabin and go for an early dinner. Our friend the blower was STILL doing its thing in the cabin, but the carpet was pretty dry by now. Steve had a message from Guess Services, so he called and they asked about our room. They followed up with us EVERY DAY. She mentioned the other room they gave us (which we were not using) and asked for the key back, as they needed to use it for another passenger. Steve decided to take a walk and return the key directly to the Guest Services manager and thank them. She then offered Steve some more free drink tickets, paid for my Mom's Internet and gave Allison a $5 game token card!! She also mentioned that they would let us know about compensation. We did not expect alot really, as we were already given several free drinks and internet.

I realize now, I got my nights screwed up in my previous day. Guess the Motown Song was THIS NIGHT ... so that is what we did after dinner. SO MUCH FUN. We did walk around and visit Kareoke at one point, but other than that, there was not much going on this night. Allison went to bed early, she was so tired. We had such a busy day, that it was time to go to bed... very happy and satisfied with a great day in St. Kitts.

Tell your son that it is perfectly ok to sit in the hotel room and watch Better Call Saul. It was the last episode of the season. I did my best not to look at any spoilers while on the cruise & watched it when I got home.
