irishayes Posted April 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2016 I am booked on the Celebrity Summit Jan 7, 2017 out of San Juan. The departure time states 8:30. Isn't that really late for a sailaway? What time can you board the ship with a departure time that late?
Cruisingwithoutthekids Posted April 28, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2016 We boarded at 11:30 a couple of weeks ago. Our philosophy is to get on board and start enjoying our cruise. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Aunt Tina Posted April 28, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 28, 2016 They can leave later often because they only travel a few miles to the next island, and it is one of the ports ship often stay later in.
irishayes Posted April 28, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted April 28, 2016 I guess my question is, how early will they let you board, with a late departure time of 8:30 pm?

hypercafe Posted April 28, 2016 #6 Share Posted April 28, 2016 Boarding time is normal, starting around 11. Sailing out at night is nice.

Mr. Click Posted April 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted April 28, 2016 and once you check in and board and dump your luggage you can get off the ship and head into Old San Juan, just be back before final boarding call.

Agreed! We really enjoyed the area during the evening and had a couple of beers at one of the restaurants with outside seating.
pete_coach Posted April 28, 2016 #10 Share Posted April 28, 2016 You may be boarding a ship that actually started in Miami or elsewhere? We were on a cruise out of Miami and stopped in San Juan. We arrived in San Juan at 3PM and departed at 9PM.

For those new to Celebrity and its cruises that depart from San Juan, the ship is NOT at the Old San Juan port (across the street from the Sheraton)! It is across the bay next to the small plane airport.

And as noted, it does not dock downtown. Passengers can still drop off luggage and go into Old San Juan for the day like xmarksx did, but this is a taxi ride away and as noted be sure to account for traffic returning to the ship so you are there on time for sail away. Tbog12 Posted April 28, 2016 #13 Share Posted April 28, 2016 I was wondering the same thing! Looks like we will be partying all day [emoji2] Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
irishayes Posted April 28, 2016 Author #14 Share Posted April 28, 2016 Tbog12, I was thinking the same thing. It will give us time to sit by the pool, unpack, eat dinner and then hit the sailaway party. But just wondered if our embarkation time would be bumped back because of the late departure. Sent from my SM-N915V using Tapatalk If you have Select Dining, make sure you go to dinner as early as possible. They start clearing out the dining room around 7 or so for muster drill. On our Summit cruise from San Juan, we went to dinner at 6:15 and were just able to finish our entree before they kicked us out.
Barwick Cruiser Posted April 28, 2016 #16 Share Posted April 28, 2016 Muster drill for the Summit sailings is at 7:45pm. So early fixed dining eats before and late diners afterwards. We had a 6pm reservation for Select and had plenty of time to eat and still make muster. We also boarded at 10:45am with no lines and once checked in, went straight onboard. Was a great cruise...Summit sailers you're in for a great time!
Charles4515 Posted April 28, 2016 #17 Share Posted April 28, 2016 I am booked on the Celebrity Summit Jan 7, 2017 out of San Juan. The departure time states 8:30. Isn't that really late for a sailaway? What time can you board the ship with a departure time that late? Sailaways from San Juan on ships that home port there are later because flights to San Juan from the US arrive later than flights to Florida. Xpressers Boss Posted April 29, 2016 #19 Share Posted April 29, 2016 We are on the Jan 7th, 2017 Summit as well. I hope we can board early, 10:30 or 11:00, like some have mentioned. Our first cruise and we can't wait!
irishayes Posted April 29, 2016 Author #20 Share Posted April 29, 2016 This was our first cruise, as well, back in 2011. You will LOVE it! Sent from my SM-N915V using Tapatalk
jsf Posted April 29, 2016 #21 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Be thankful, for many years the San Juan departure was at 11:30 PM and the muster drill was about 10:pm. You would almost get one day on the ship before your cruise would start. J.
dodger1964 Posted April 29, 2016 #22 Share Posted April 29, 2016 Check-in time for this sailing is between 3pm to 7pm. Enjoy your sailing! Is there a reason why check in starts so late on this cruise. We have done many SJU X cruises and check in has always started "late morning". Just curious. Thanks for reply.
