It is all based on your view. To me a cocktail dress is not something that you could wear to the office or a wedding (UK wedding not USA). It is a distinct short evening gown. But I am the exception I think. Most people wear the kind of dresses that I would wear to the office as cocktail dresses on informal nights. Maybe different on a world tour?

My daughter and her husband to be are honeymooning on a transatlantic crossing on the QM2. My future son-in-law is fine about a dark suite and tie and a dark dinner suit, but what does he where for the theme formal nights such as the black and white ball? Should he get a white dinner jacket to wear with this black dinner trousers? They want to do things right for there first cruise.

You don't have to worry to much about dressing up for "Themed" nights unless you want to. Normal formal wear is fine. I must admit that I do do the black and white and have got a black and white long dress. It is always great seeing what some people wear like Royal Ascot etc, wearing a fascinator, but it is not essential (I don't take one). I do hope you enjoy your trip. I have been Round the World on QE, in two separate halves (have family living in Sydney so have to get off there!!), but have always enjoyed the formal nights.

I agree with that! I have my "Cunard Wear" - All of my cocktail dresses which are indeed short gowns, with all the trimmings, or actual long ball gowns. And then I have my "Non-Cunard Wear" - all of my suits, outfits for work, pants & shirts/blouses, for a regular dinner out, etc. Never the twain shall meet.

That's not been my experience, I don't wear office wear on an informal evening and I don't remember seeing many other women in dresses you would wear to the office.

My office is in a steel works so my work wear definitely wouldn't be suitable for an informal evening !

I never received a brochure.

Really? Did you use an online agent? Any good agent will have a cruise line send a brochure to you. It's casual during the day & The daily guide will show the dress code of the evening.

Lots of Hobbs floral short dresses. I would describe those as business casual and very much office wear for most of my clients.

Thank you.

I did use a travel agent. You comments made me look further on line and found out much more about the dress codes and I thank you. Our cruise actually have 3 nights where jackets are optional. The rest of the time my husband will be in a black suit, black jacket with other colors of pants, velvet jacket for formal nights, and of course, ties.

We realize Cunard is a special cruise line and it is important to us to be properly dressed! We look forward to the cruise! Thank you!

, it sounds like office wear is even more complicated than Cunard dress codes ! I would never have considered floral short dresses as business casual so I have learnt something.

Have a wonderful time, the fly cruises in the Med have jacket optional nights on embarkation days.

If you are English the only time a white evening jacket would be worn is in tropical climates and even then it is certainly not compulsory. So he will be fine. Conventions on a cruise are no different from those on land.

My husband would simply wear a black and white bow tie with his black dinner suit for the black and white ball. He would definitely not be out of place. I either wear a black and white evening dress or a black dress with white jewellery or wear a white Pashmina.

What a lovely way to honeymoon. I'm sure they will have a wonderful time.

We have Cunard cruise wardrobe as we have spent many nights often on world voyages on Cunard ships so you accumulate your wardrobe over time.

We like to dress up on an evening and especially formal nights. I always wear a long dress. Usually have them made and always something colourful as I don't wear black. I do have three black and white long dresses that I bring out for black and white ball night. Like member Dreamflightpat whom I have sailed with around the world, we like our black and white ball dresses. :)

You can't ever feel too overdressed on Cunard and people who do not dress are in the minority.

Day wear you sound as if you are well sorted out and the rest, just go with the flow. I see you have just been in Israel, well I live very close to there so you will know what the weather is like in the Eastern Med and the clothes you wore there will be suitable for the rest of your Mediterranean cruise during the day.

I also take short dresses for non formal nights. I often have them made and I am in the process of having five new one made for my next Cunard cruise as it is in November so going for a different look ;)

I often go for something embellished for a bit of glam. I like the look of lace that is in at the moment.

It is pretty easy to find nice dressy clothes these days that do not break the bank, get some nice costume jewellery or the real thing and that goes down a treat as well so go for it and have a fabulous cruise.

I always find the staff onboard really like it if you make the effort to dress and they let you know they appreciate it as well by telling you so, and the maître D always escorts me to my table as they love to do it and it makes one feel special. Enjoy your time on QV.

Here we are on a formal night.

where else can you experience something like this this days ??

...on the Orient Express where we were a couple of weeks ago, on the London - Venice round trip, including a 2 night stay at the Cipriani.

The dress code was followed by 95+% of the passengers.

Stewart

Absolutely true BigMac. I have done the Orient Express twice and both times dressed up authentic 1920's clothes, and also formal wear for dinner. It is a number of years since I last did the journey but it was very special and I am pleased to hear you had a good time and that people do still have a dress code.

Be prepared to discover there will be no going back. :)

To what? Just got off the QM2. Enjoyed it very much, but once is enough. Would like to try the QE, however. Big difference between a cruise and a crossing.

Obviously, the beautiful people will feature in any brochure trying to sell a perceived life style. It's called marketing. Most companies do this. When I walk around the ships I see passengers enjoying themselves and day wear ranges from the simple elegant dress and chinos and polo shirt, to a tees, jeans and shorts style, the latter being the most prevalent [and remember we are advising on Victoria here, not a TA on QM], especially in warmer climes, which is where treasure is going.

As very frequent passengers with Cunard [Queens Grill just for interest with reference to part of your comment], we have a collection of present and past brochures. It's interesting to note the present brochures don't have as many photographs of the Gala style of dress as they used to. Gala gowns and the beautiful people are certainly present on all ships, but the majority of ladies wear long dresses and not the gowns brochures depicted, [subtle diffference those of us who have inferior status and who were dragged up, know about;) ] and cocktail wear of an evening. Treasure's suggested evening and daytime wear will be fine. No need to peruse photographs. She already has it nailed.

Good morning Victoria.

Brochures are for advertising or, as you state, marketing. That's stating the obvious.

They also provide deeper guidance on a multitude of items, including 'dress', indeed, in the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section of the latest Cunard brochure the opening paragraph says..."Dressing up elegantly for dinner is one of the great thrills of Cunard..."

It is one of the reasons Cunard is my favourite line. I have sailed on all three ships of the current fleet, and two no longer in service, at both Grills levels and also, to a much lesser extent, in Britannia and Britannia Club; the longest being 56 nights in Queens Grill.

12519335023_324fcba201_z.jpg

Incidentally, both my wife and I like to dress smartly at all times while on board and not just for the 'formal' occasion...

Unfortunately I'm unaware of any name given to collectors of 'out of print' cruise brochures. It would surely make a good trivia question. :):)

In the words of Ol' Blue eyes..."We have, so much in common".

You and JT look gorgeous and certainly know how to dress for Cunard.

Even more, you ain't afraid to show it.

Being an ephemera dealer, we call such people collectors of "out of print" brochures. There is a lively group and the brochures and other Cunard memorabilia bring decent $$ in the market place.
