What to do around port area Civitavecchia

We are sailing on the Royal Princess October 8 and will arrive at the port early. Once we board, we would like to get off the ship and walk around. Is there anything to see in the port area, without having to take a taxi? I have skimmed through these threads and don't see much.

The port is somewhat industrial, and walking around within the port, while doable, is not the safest idea. You could take the free shuttle to the gate and walk around town some.

Quite honestly, there is not a lot to see in Civitavecchia. It is a very average and unprepossessing town.

 

Most people who get off the ship and walk around are looking to do something like purchase some wine or other beverages to take aboard.

 

You can walk along the promenade next to the sea.

 

Can't think of much else...

With each passing year we have enjoyed the local town even more.

 

No it's not Rome, or many of the Italy ports that one stops at but.........

 

There is a beautiful Catholic Church nearby the port entrance. Visit inside the Church.

 

On many days there is an outdoor market similar to what you will find in many towns in Italy.

 

There are several streets with stores and cafes.

 

Even take a walk towards the train station.

 

You can enjoy a couple of hours in town.

The market at Civitavecchia is an every morning occurrence.

 

You can find it in the heart of the old town. If you shoot for the intersection of Via Barberini and Via Monte Grappa you'll run into it. It goes on for several blocks and will be hard to miss.

We made reservations at this restaurant and made pasta with other people in our tour group. It was the best time and I know others on our cruise are doing this and they will be making pizza! Great fun and something different.

Thanks so much for posting those lovely pictures! We will be spending a night in Civitavecchia prior to our cruise, and were planning on walking around. It's great that you were able to see so much in just 2 hours! Do you recall where the market was? We plan on staying at a hotel along the water.

 

Hi, Host Jacquely, thank you for reading and the kind words. I think euro cruiser gave a good description of the location of the market. It's a covered parking lot type of set up at Via Monte Grappa/Via Cooperazione/Vioa Della Case Nuove and Via Baberni. Nothing spectacular but it was kind of fun going through the colorful vendors.

If you check Google Earth, we started from the port shuttle stop near the roundabout, walked down Calata della Rocca to the castle, then continued on Calata Principe Tommaso which turned into the main street by the beach front (Calata Cesara Laurenti). The huge plaza at the beach (Piazza della Vita), then crossed the street to town. After the church (Chiesa dell'Immacolata) we followed Corso Centocelle then made a left up on Via Monte Grappa and bumped into the market. We did not know where we were going and just aimlessly walking around exploring. I am sure we missed some other interesting spots but felt we had a good day in town.

I don't know if this is the one the others are referring to but if you Google civitavecchia cooking class I found a Tripadvisor reference to Aqua Restaurant.
