Lost CRUISE CASH ON CARNIVAL

cruise case is meant to be purchased as a gift.

For my first cruise with Carnival, my team at work purchased me some drink coupons for Christmas. When Carnival eliminated the coupons, they went to on board credit to be purchased in the form of cruise cash.

If I wanted to gift someone something, cruise cash is one option (along with physical gifts delivered onboard). I would not purchase this for myself - I'd rather either prepay one of my credit cards and use that for my sign and sail card or keep the cash and add that to my account upon boarding.

I don't understand why they just wouldn't get a GIFT card if they wanted to give you a gift. At least it is refundable. Why have 2 ways to give someone a gift on a cruise ship. This is just a way to possibly get more money out of people, especially if it is a gift and the person sailing never read the part about it being nonrefundable.

Because it is automatically applied to their account so they don't have to do anything. They probably think it's a good idea. Just like ordering gifts through the Fun Shops.

Exactly.

And it can be a very nice thought/gesture. And extra $25 - $50 dollars to spend on board on drinks, photos or the casino? Most would enjoy that kind of gift.

Not sure why some find it necessary to insult people that buy cruise cash but there is nothing at all wrong with funding your onboard account this way if you read the terms and then understand them. They are designed to use right on the cruise you are taking or to give to someone else. So you can't transfer the purchase from booking to booking or get any money back. Those facts are not in any fine print or fuzzy confusing wording. It's right there on the 3-line description. So if you lose money it's your own fault, which the OP easily acknowledged.

People plan and fund their vacations in a variety of ways. And there is no one size fits all. I have used cruise cash to fund my kid's accounts. $25 to get them started but the majority of my s&s account is funded by gift cards also and yes it's a good one because I can get back whatever I don't use (something you can also do with cruise cash) and use them for every cruise specific expense other than bon voyage purchases in advance. Please don't preach about discipline. I've been saving for 3 cruises simultaneously for a year in various ways. I'm plenty disciplined. As are others. It's easy to slap a credit card on your account. And if that works for some then good. But I applaud Carnival for offering a variety of ways to fund your onboard spending. Certainly makes it easier for those of us who use credit cards for other things on vacation or not at all.

This page is here to ask questions and every bit about gift cards and cruise cash I learned right here. If you're a member then there's no reason to be taken by surprise by cruise cash being non refundable. Or learning the trick to actually avoid that problem. Still nobody is perfect and the OP was trying to be helpful to the next person.

Too often when threads about cruise cash and deposits and such come up, people start that mess about a loan to Carnival. What am I losing besides a few pennies in interests that I'll gladly give up in lieu of pacing myself and saving at a comfortable pace. Not everyone can afford to drop a bunch of money at once on vacation. And what difference does it make? Everybody paid in full gets to go. No matter how you did it.

Just wondering.....

Could the OP bought the gift cards from Cherry on Top with the cruise cash?

Many times you just don't want another bauble or bottle.

We do a combo of cruise cash and gift cards. For us and how we prepare for our cruises it just makes sense. I look at what we spent on a previous cruise and purchase our cruise cash based on that. I undercut a little to make sure we don't purchase too much. Then I purchase gift cards to bring to make up the difference. And if the gift cards aren't all used, then we're ahead of the game for our next cruise. So to each his own, as they say.
