Suggest those that think it is not a safety issue Google "Star Princess cruise ship fire"

I did read the report on the Star Princess fire and no place did I read where the cause was improperly disposed of smoking material.

The report is inconclusive, and lacking evidence suggests the cause may have been a butt tossed overboard.

It may also have been from some chucklehead having a lit candle on their balcony, and a towel catching fire and being blown back onto the ship. It could have been caused by a lot of things, but the true cause was never determined.

When people use the Star Princess fire as a reason to curb or eliminate smoking it really works against their argument. Facts and only facts will change policy, not opinions.

Nope. Doesn't bother me one bit. Wish it was legal on the balconies, then there would be many less congregated in the increasingly shrinking smoking areas. And the casino could be smoke free.

I have reported it once before the ship even left port. Those that smoke on a balcony or any place not allowed, are part of the "it's my cruise, I will do what I want" crowd, and they need to be reminded that it isn't. They chose the cruise, with the knowledge of the rules, therefore, follow it.

I would and I have. the time I reported it they were such heavy smokers and not very courteous at all. The area we were located in all the ashes settled on our balcony. I couldn't even go out barefoot and enjoy the smokey smelly air that I paid for.:(

I am a smoker. I would not report a balcony smoker unless I saw cigarette butts go off the side of the ship. Then we're talking a safety risk to everyone. A whiff of smoke here and there is no big deal to me. However, I will not step foot in the casino because closed-in spaces filled with smokers is just plain nasty! I feel that smoking outdoors is way less offensive than smoking indoors.

What annoys me more is people on their balcony who are having such an obnoxiously loud conversation that everyone can hear it, and it goes on and on and on. That disrupts my enjoyment of my balcony the most. I go to my balcony to get away from the crowd and just have quiet solitude with a book and the ocean.

When I booked my first solo cruise on Princess I got a balcony room just to sit out there with my book, a cocktail, and cigarettes. They changed the smoking policy a month before I sailed. :( Turns out I smoked less on that cruise since I had to leave my sweet balcony to go elsewhere. So maybe not such a bad thing.

I do like the idea of a section of balcony rooms in one area where smoking would be allowed, but I'm not sure if I would get one.

If the smoke if noticeable and it prevented me from enjoying my own balcony, yes. And if there were no remaining chairs around the pool and a towel sat there for half a day - yes, it would hit the flo'. Call me any name you like, I'm not very tolerant of rude people or bullies.

I don't think I would but I ain't mad at the folks who might. If the smoke is bothering you, you have the right to enjoy your cruise without people breaking rules around you.

Smoke just doesn't bother me much (I am an ex-smoker but the smell of smoke doesn't trigger anything in me like I know it does some others).

I have a question....Carnival banned smoking on balconies in 2014, is that correct? So to the posters that are present that can absolutely not stand even the slightest whiff of burning tobacco, did you not go out on your balcony? Did you just book OV rooms or interior rooms? Or did you wait for the new rule and just start cruising in 2014?

No. I am a smoker, and I do not book balconies anymore. When I did book balconies, I hardly ever saw anyone on theirs. I did hear a couple one evening, if you know what I mean...........but I don't think my smoke was bothering them.

Doesn't really matter, the rule was the rule and you dealt with it any way that you could. I remember the days when I smoked while shopping in the grocery store and virtually everywhere else. Times change.

I was just curious what those people did prior to 2014....Many posters have said it is either a health risk to smell smoke or so unenjoyable if they catch the slightest whiff....Sounds like we have a lot of new balcony cruisers since 2014

No, from a former smoker. Doesn't bother me. When I was a smoker, and when smoking was allowed on the balcony, I usually put my cigarette out when neighbors were on their balcony. I never smoked in my cabin when it was allowed. I'm more concerned with those folks who throw a lit cigarette over the side of the ship. Very dangerous fire hazard. I'd rather they spend more time trying to put a stop to that sort of behavior.

If it's a whiff here and there, no. If it's enough to aggravate my asthma and cause me to start having coughing fits, yes. I'm not paying thousands of dollars for the privilege of using my inhaler because someone wants to break the rules. I have a coworker who I am close to who sometimes comes in my office after smoking outside and sometimes that's enough to aggravate my asthma.

We have a lot of people empowered by a change in the paradigm. When I was growing up smoking was allowed almost everywhere, including hospital rooms. Now non-smokers don't have to put up with what they had to put up with back then. As a smoker I was perfectly okay with limiting my smoking to the designated areas even though I did complain from time to time about all of the new restrictions. Now that I am a former smoker I still feel that smokers should be accommodated and smokers should comply with the rules.
