Actually, yes. I am a Guardian (personality type) and rules just happen to be important to me. Especially when someone is making a point to let me know they are. It's the same speech I gave my floor in college when I was an RA: If I don't see, hear, smell or taste it, I don't know about it. But when you make it a point to do something so that I can see, taste, hear or smell it, don't cry to me for getting in trouble...

JennN, I love that response. Too bad many in our society just don't get it.

I have followed this thread for the past week or so and I do have one question to all of those who would go and report it. How would you know where the smoke is coming from. For instance, I use my balcony a lot and I normally sit out there very late at night - it is dark, the ship is moving so air is stirring, and if I were to smell smoke, how would I really be able to tell with a certainty where smoke is coming from, it would next to impossible. I respect rules, and I think everyone should adhere to them whether we agree or not; but to report someone on a hunch or a smell would be a bit much if the person reporting is wrong. I also don't understand how smoking on a balcony can affect someone's asthma and walking through the casino or walking through the ships designated smoking areas do not.

Techy, there is no room for logic on these boards, stop it immediately :D

People who are sensitive to cigarette smoke avoid these areas. I avoid them. I'm basically kicked out of the casino due to the smoke, why should I be kicked off of my balcony?

Use my eyes and see if I can see someone smoking. If I can, I can identify the location. If I can't see it, I can't identify it. This is common sense.

I would only report it if I could identify where it were coming from and that's fairly easy to do if it is the balcony next door. I personally will be steering clear of the casino and all designated smoking areas. My attitude changed 4 weeks ago when I lost part of a lung to lung cancer. (And if the smoke is bad enough yes, it can affect someone's athsma, even outdoors.)

I would only report someone if it's a chronic issue, but it wouldn't be hard to pinpoint which neighbor is the "offending" party.

You know how flimsy those partitions are. You can easily hear if there are people out in the balcony right next to yours since noises are magnified. You can hear the door opening, the scraping of the chair, the flick of the lighter, and a moment later, you get the whiff of smoke. And let's not forget that many times you can clearly see what's going on in the balcony next doors on the glass reflection.

I know that many smokers don't realize how strongly they smell of cigarettes, but I think that even more people don't realize how little privacy these balconies actually afford them.

Those of us who have asthma don't go through areas where there is smoking.:confused: Not to mention, walking past an area vs sitting on a balcony and inhaling the smoke from next door are two different things.

Sorry I haven't read the entire thread, but I wonder when someone reports smoking how they prove the infraction. Smoke drifts, it may be coming from below or to either side, or a few cabins away when the ship is stationary and since when a ship is moving the air is also moving I would find it hard to "know" who is smoking and I refuse to whip my head around a balcony divider and confirm that a cigarette is, in fact, lit.

I am sure smoking on balconies has been greatly reduced since the ban and has had a positive affect across the board.

Booze smuggling is easier to "prove" so it is more aggressively targeted.

My answer is "no" I wouldn't report anyone. If the problem is problematic and I find myself on a balcony next to a habitual smoker that I can prove I would be gracious, tell them it irritates me and ask them nicely if they know smoking is prohibited. If the passenger is then rude etc. I would just back off and hope that it doesn't happen on the next balcony I book.

The question was would you report SOMEONE smoking, not would your report SMELLING smoke. Reporting someone indicates to me that you saw someone smoking...and if they were down wind, you might not even smell the smoke.

I avoid going anywhere near the casino and I make it one of the first things I do to find out where the smoking areas are onboard so I can avoid those as well. It's not my place to shame smokers, if somebody wants to smoke that's their business, however, if their smoking affects my vacation/health, it becomes my business. As for not being able to tell where it is coming from, I'm going to assume if I can smell it I can tell where it is coming from. If it isn't coming from right next door then I would assume I wouldn't smell it as the wind would take it away. As someone who has spent a considerable amount of money and time in the hospital due to asthma, it's just not worth my well earned vacation to care about hurting somebody's feelings who is blatantly flaunting the breaking of rules. I don't care who breaks the rules or what their reason is, as long as it doesn't affect my vacation/health....wear shorts in the MDR...I couldn't care less, it won't affect my health.

No more mister nice guy, have asked to many times. If they are smoking next to me I just take a picture and head to GS. Problem solved

Did just this on the Magic in February, got desired results. Enjoyed the rest of the cruise without watery eyes and my wife being able to enjoy the balcony.

Haven't done it on a cruise ship but I once took a picture of the smoker directly underneath the "no smoking" sign. Boy, was she mad. But she did butt out immediately. LOL
