Basic Poll: Would you report someone smoking on their balcony?

How is CCL to enforce the issue if they aren't told that there is an issue? There is a difference between a rule being broken in a public space where the crew can notice it and a rule being broken in a private space.

 

I just lost part of a lung to lung cancer so if I cannot use my balcony because someone is smoking than yes, I will call guest services. (And I will no longer be using the casino, although my use has been very limited in any case.)

 

And I do agree that all of the rules need to be enforced.

 

That sounds great in theory but unfortunately it doesn't work in practice. Otherwise, why are there so many threads about chair hogs, people in t-shirts and shorts in the MDR on "Cruise Elegant" nights, kids in the Serenity area, kids in diapers in the pool, kids in the hot tubs, etc?

No, I wouldn't report it. Just like I don't report chair hogs, saving seats in the theater, people jumping lines in the buffet, snowflakes in the hot tubs, serenity area and casino as well as diapered babies in the main pool. All of these broken rules hamper the enjoyment of something I have paid for... "My" vacation. As a smoker that obeys the rules, yes it bothers me. Just as much as any other rule that is violated. But it irritates me more how folks pick and choose which rules "apply to them" but I'm on vacation and if I were to report every rule violation I encountered, that's all I would be doing! :rolleyes:

 

I would report the smoker - just like if I was sitting in the hot tub and someone tries to bring in baby with a swim diaper. I'm not going to just give up my enjoyment and get out. If I had someone on the balcony next to me who was a regular smoker on their balcony, then yes, I would report it. Why should I have to go inside or not use my balcony because someone else does whatever they want?

 

If there are seat savers that don't affect me, I'm not going to bother saying anything (nor do I have to); if there are seat savers in the wheelchair area that prevent me from sitting with my mother, then yeah, I'm going to either say something or get an employee - I'm not going to say, "Oh well, because of those people we just won't see the show".

This type of "event" could just as easily happen by someone throwing a cigarette overboard from one of the "designated" smoking areas. The best way to avoid this is to make sure no one leaves flammable items on their balcony, such as towels, bathing suits, etc.

 

Maybe we should call GS if someone does that !!!!!

The main point being is if someone is smoking on a balcony the only way CCL is going to find out is if someone says something. I don't put the chairhog rule or dress code rule in the same category as the no smoking on the balcony rule and kids in diapers rule as the latter deal with the health and safety of passengers.

Yes! The only time I had balcony was on a 7 night to Mexico. Our neighbors were smoking on the balcony constantly. Smoking was allowed then, so we just didn't use our balcony because it was so bad. I have not booked a balcony since because I don't want to waste money to smell smoke. If I did, and it was constant, I would absolutely report it.

I haven't run into an issue as of yet. If it was an occasional thing, where we both happened to be trying to enjoy our balconies at the same time and once a day or so I had to deal with the smell it wouldn't bother me. If every time I went out to enjoy my balcony I had to smell it I would probably report it. If they were using the E-cigs I wouldn't be bothered by it at all and wouldn't feel the need to report it.

If it is a fire risk for someone to smoke on their balcony why is it not a fire risk to smoke in the casino or a deck three floors above their balcony? And if it was such a risk to smoke on the balcony why did carnival wait until 2014 to make it against the rules?

Well, yes, we would report smokers. Just got off Freedom and twice we sat on the balcony and watched cigarette butts sail down from cabins above us. We called security, they came, but the cabins above us all denied smoking. One fire is all it takes...

I like the vocal non smokers who want to complain about to much smoke being in the casino....Cruise lines have accommodated them to the point that 90% of the ship is smoke free, yet they still want to complain. I am a non smoker BTW

I would report it if it kept me from being able to enjoy my balcony. I study deck plans at length to try to choose a room away from the smoking section so it doesn't even drift up to my balcony on port days. I respect smoker's rights to have a designated section and I will hold my breath and move through the casino as quickly as possible, but when I am in my space, I don't want to have to smell it or taste it in the air. For the record, I was a smoker 15 years ago. When I was smoking, I really didn't understand exactly how noticeable it was to other people around me. I get it now, lol. So yeah, if you are smoking on your balcony and I have to smell it...I'm making a call. We have saved for a long time for this trip and for us the balcony is an important splurge. I won't let someone else take that away from us.

I'm amazed that almost 40% said no.... you would think that every person aboard a ship is looking out for a smoker so they can call them out, or pour water on the offending object... that is if you read the "smoking threads" on here.

if i can resist duct taping the mouth of a whiny little snowflake which is surely much more aggravating to my cruise experience, someone smoking on their balcony isn't going to bother me in the slightest. :cool:

Nope. Doesn't bother me one bit. Wish it was legal on the balconies, then there would be many less congregated in the increasingly shrinking smoking areas. And the casino could be smoke free.

It takes 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette. Stay inside for 5 minutes. A lot of people don't know they can't smoke on the balcony. Hear it every cruise. Steward lets them know if butts or ashtray are found.

 

No I wouldn't say anything to GS. I might tell the person about the rule and charge.

 

There ought to be another place inside besides the casino to smoke.

Ehhh I really am not sure how to answer. I'm technically a smoker. I switched to an e-cigarette almost a year ago, but the smell of smoke doesn't bother me. That being said, I've always abided by the rules & smoked only in the designated areas. If I'm sailing with my kids & the smoke really is egregious I might say something. I never smoked in my home or the presence of my kids as to not impact their health & I wouldn't want them impacted by someone else breaking rules.

 

I would not call GS to report it on principle alone though. I mind my business. I'll follow the rules & keep my side of the street clean & won't bother anyone else unless their rule breaking is truly impacting our experience. If my balcony weren't in a cloud of smoke, I don't see myself calling for a faint smell.
