HAL used to do various game shows -- they are gone now -- due to cut backs in staff.

There are a lot of trivia games.

You do not need reservations for any shows on HAL ships.

Agree -- definitely try the Tamarind for dinner -- $15 per person -- price may have gone up.

They had "The Marriage Game" on the May 7th sailing (7 day Alaska cruise).

They don't have fresh orange juice in the Lido Buffet but I think you can still get it complimentary in the dining room for breakfast. The ship is beautiful and clean. if you drink wine, bring it with you. You get 1 bottle per person or 2 per cabin that you do not have to pay a corkage fee, if you drink it in the cabin. Bring more and pay the corkage fee of $18, it is worth it as the bottles you can buy for $7-10 at a wine store are $40 on board. Eat at the Pinnacle Grill for lunch. It is $10 and the food is great. Dinner is $35. Ask for hot hor douvrs at the Pinnacle Bar and other bars before dinner, they are complimentary. Do a martini tasting or class. They are inexpensive and you get the samples. Make a reservation for dinner even if you have anytime dining. If you are going to Alaska, do the Crab Fest in Ketchikan! The train in Skagway is good but only do one way. Private tours are less expensive vs the ships tours. Don't miss the formal night that serves lobster, it is great, but you have to go to the dining room.

One adult in the cabin is one bottle. Three adults is three bottles. Four adults is four bottles. Only if there are two adults is there two bottles in the cabin---one bottle per adult.

It was $20 pp and just this week (8/1) it went up to $25.

Thanks, RuthC, for that clarification. We have never brought wine on board. Given the cost of wine purchased on the ship, we are seriously considering bringing one bottle each on our upcoming cruise. Can you answer this question; - is the checking in process, during embarkation, delayed if you bring your allotment of "free wine" in your carry-on baggage?

The check-in process will vary a bit, depending on the port.

First, you must carry on your wine yourself; no placing the bottle(s) in checked luggage. It may be packed in a carry-on, or any method you choose, so long as you carry it.

 

The process will vary a bit from one port to another, but these three steps will appear after you turn over your large suitcase(s). You will go through security, where the person and carry-ons will be screened, the way is done at an airport. You will check in. There will (should?) be a table off to the side where you go to declare your wine. If it's just the one bottle, there's no charge. It may or may not be recorded. Any additional bottles should incur an $18 per bottle corkage, and they will be marked as "paid". Those bottles can be brought to a dining room or lounge for no additional charge.

If the "free" bottle is brought to the dining room or a lounge, the corkage will be charged then.

 

So, the extra step will take extra time for the person with wine, but should not add any time to the rest of the boarding line.

yes they had the marriage game show on 9 July sailing. A bit disappointed with what other lines call enrichment programme - there wasn't one. May be they reckon in Alaska everyone will be so interested in scenery no one wants to listen to a lecture. With the exception of the ranger's lecture after glacier bay - a must see. However having said that the cookery school is worth a visit and we went to a brilliant session on using movie maker. The IT room is well equipped and they teach you something useful it's not just another sales pitch.

 

Full marks to HAL for their informative and interactive navigation screen on your cabin TV. First it gives you a weather forecast as well as nav info. Second you can zoom in or out on the nav screen to get the info you want.not seen this on other lines.

You don't need show reservations. And when you see the quality of the shows you will know why. On our sailing they had two violinists who were twins and they were brilliant. BBking Blues club was good, but the rest of the entertainment was not up to much (of course that is my opinion, others will have different tastes and enjoy different things).

We found that if you ask your steward he will bring you glasses to your room and you can take a glass of your own wine with you to the dining room or anywhere else on the ship. You cannot have a whole bottle of your free wine with dinner but for me one glass is enough.

You can only take your own wine to the MDR (either by the bottle or by the glass) if you've paid the corkage fee on it. The non-corkage bottle is specifically to be enjoyed In Your Room - not in any public areas.
