waterbugohio Posted August 13, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2016 Just curious. How/when does Freedom transistion from Port Canaveral to Fort Lauderdale?? If I'm reading the website right, it looks like there is a day in between?? Does the ship just sit in Canaveral overnight, or does it sail around empty and then come ito Fort Lauderdale the next morning?? Just curious. We are on the second sailing out of FLL. Ken at the beach Posted August 14, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2016 (edited) She is sailing empty of guests to FLL. My guess is nice and slow. It costs money to sit at a dock. Edited August 14, 2016 by Ourusualbeach
Retired LEO Posted August 14, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2016 The Freedom and the Oasis should pass each other (both empty) during the night.

deliver42 Posted August 14, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 14, 2016 Thanks to our maritime laws, they have to sail empty. They have to have a foreign port between U.S. stops. That's why they stopped cruises to nowhere.

Not only a foreign port, but since they are going between two different US cities, it has to be a distant foreign port, such as South American or the ABC islands. Now that would have been a real good repo cruise! How silly of Royal to just have both ships go empty. I would have loved to do that repo.:)

Just in case anyone is interested this is the law. Reason why we have Alaska cruises making stops in Canada, or starting in Vancouver. Hawaii cruises also restricted from US. Merchant Marine Act of 1920 .... AKA Jones Act.

I believe the Jones Act was for commercial shipping. The Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA) of 1886 is the law that applies to cruise ships. norcalemt02 Posted August 15, 2016 #16 Share Posted August 15, 2016 I wouldn't mind a cruise that starts at one port and ends at another

This could turn into one of those SAT questions: If ship A departs PE at x:xx and ship B departs PC at y:yy where/when will they pass each other? Biker19 Posted August 15, 2016 #23 Share Posted August 15, 2016 Not that difficult, but we would also need to know each ship's speed.:) Of course RCI will tell the Captains to save money so they'll go at a leisurely 15 knots.
