remharri Posted October 25, 2016 #76 Share Posted October 25, 2016 Between the time I booked and took my first Celebrity cruise in September and now, they are now charging over 200% for singles .I usually sail on Crystal so the fare isnt the issue so much as it is the principle of the thing. I do not use more than 1 persons worth of space and am darned if I pay over 200% on any cruise with any cruise line. What a slap in the face for those of us who either do not have anyone to travel with or choose to travel alone! Thanks for posting this, I've never cruised Celebrity. How is it traveling solo and meeting people? I'm really just looking for something affordable for Feb/March next year that will give me a nice tan and refreshing beverages. haikou Posted October 25, 2016 #77 Share Posted October 25, 2016 so I don't totally buy they additional revenue loss from the potential second passenger in a room. Plus solo rooms are capacity controlled for this and other possible reasons. My beef is with what appears to be MORE than 200% single/solo supplement fares on future cruises. I looked to see if it was just because some categories of inside cabins were sold out/unavailable on the cruises I was considering, but it still looks like more than 200% to me. I did receive a reply from Celebrity today and they still claim the standard solo rate is 200% that of a double occupancy stateroom.

Hotel rooms and cruise ship cabins are priced by double occupancy so it makes sense that the single supplement would be 100%. It's nice when it's less than 100% but to charge more for the same cabin when occupied by one person instead of two makes no sense and is certainly unfair. If it saves you money, just book your cruise with John Doe or Jane (whichever your preference) who will be a no show on Embarkation Day. And at the Meet and Mingle , it was not well organized .Too many people sitting down, so I saw little mingling I am shy and between no nametags and not feeling like the area was conducive to introductions, it was tough too. The one singles event CC put on was poorly attended. Only 10 -15 people at most. I think I only saw one of those people again on a 17 day cruise :( I don't know what the answer is to your question. I usually cruise on Crystal and have no problem meeting people on the Symphony and Serenity, but they are half the size, have a low crew turnover, and I play team trivia and paddle tennis-and I always meet people during those activities I found so many activities were gambling oriented, and many in lounges and bars where I do not feel comfortable as a non drinker. My conclusion is Celebrity is not a good fit for me PS Crystals single supplements start at 30% more than double occupancy(used to be 25% until almost 2 years ago), and is all inclusive so by the time you add in drink packages(alcohol or non alcohol alike) internet cost(1 hr free per day on Crystal) etc it is not really much more to sail on Crystal. Hmm, I am not sure what you mean about the activities being focused around gambling and drinking on Celebrity. I have not found that to be the case, and I think I would have noticed because I do not ever gamble in ship's casinos, and the only alcoholic beverages I enjoy are my "frequent flyer" perks and are free. If all the activities were gambling and drinking-focused I'd be very unhappy with the cruise. I know Celebrity has several trivia games going on most of the cruises I've been on--one is progressive trivia. The activities I enjoy on sea days are art/crafting classes, lectures (on transatlantics they generally have 2 lecturers who give interesting talks every sea day, or sometimes 3 lecturers), reading on my balcony, sitting by one of the pools, listening to musical entertainment, enjoying a fancy coffee... As far as meeting people, if you are looking to meet singles Celebrity may not be a good choice as there are not a lot of cruise-sponsored singles activities. I can't speak to how fun or well-attended they are because I have never been to one. I'm happy to speak with anyone, whether they are single/solo or not, and people on cruises tend to be friendly. So I have no problem finding folks to chat with. We all have our own view of what an ideal cruise vacation looks like, and of course we don't all have the same view! I'd love to try Crystal but I have yet to find a cruise fare with them that was anywhere near the same ballpark as a Celebrity cruise fare, and I'm just too cheap to spend that much on a cruise. Celebrity suits my tastes very well. :)
JayS Posted October 25, 2016 #81 Share Posted October 25, 2016 (edited) I think the posters beef is that they are now charging more than 200% I am fine with the solo cabins and did one last week on the Anthem no problem with the cabin but have an issue with RCCL feeling that solo's should also eat solo. I called the head waiter out on it and he said people don't want to share tables but a couple of girls at the next table said they would have welcomed it but were never given the option. I was on the Independence 2 years ago and this was never an issue. But as solos we speak with our dollars and even though I am a Diamond cruiser with RCCL I will go back to NCL who have addressed this issue. As a HAL solo cruiser who tried Anthem and NCL Breakaway this year, I agree that RCCL dining rooms are not as solo friendly as HAL. On HAL it was the exception rather the rule that I was placed by myself. On the Anthem except for the times I came with people I met outside of the MDR I was usually placed by myself. On the BA I met with the solo cruisers and went to dinner as a group. Edited October 25, 2016 by JayS

She is a travel agent and was able to handle it by calling the revenue department. They fixed the fare and all was good. More than 200% is unacceptable. Sungold Posted October 25, 2016 #83 Share Posted October 25, 2016 As a solo traveler, even the 100% single supplement is unfair to me. I may take up the space of two people in a cabin, but I don't eat the food of 2 people or use the resources of 2 people. My bar tab is probably close to two people's! I also make purchases in the gift shop. So they are not losing any money on me cruising solo. So I only cruise when I can find a bargain. Living in Florida helps. PlayCousin Posted November 26, 2016 #94 Share Posted November 26, 2016 Barring last minute options I haven't seen much in the way of great bargains for solos lately. I've seen acceptable prices at double but no deals or discounts. I'm always looking and I'm not brand loyal. I can only hope that things will change in the coming months. kek123 Posted November 27, 2016 #95 Share Posted November 27, 2016 Just booked the Azamara Quest departing on April 18, 2017 from Barcelona and stopping in Isla Mallorca, Corsica, Monte Carlo, Florence and ending up in Rome. No supplement at all and not a bad price either. I sailed on Azamara a few years ago and they really treated me well.
RandoCalrissian Posted November 29, 2016 #96 Share Posted November 29, 2016 (edited) Christmas 2016 + New Year 2017 in South America Norwegian Sun 14 day roundtrip from Buenos Aires. From Dec 23rd to Jan 6th. The standard guarantees are the cheapest at $799 (inside), $899 (oceanview), $999 (balcony) but I think the BD-class balcony at $1329 is the best deal since it comes with two perks. The free tips promo is available, but an email I got from Norwegian says the current round of promos is going away tomorrow. It's worth almost $200, making your other included perk cost about $140 vs. the guarantee balcony. Taxes are $483 for all of these. Be aware of the Brazil visa requirement and lead times if you need one. P.S. also comes with the $100 OBC for Cyber Monday. Edited November 30, 2016 by RandoCalrissian P.S. remharri Posted December 5, 2016 #99 Share Posted December 5, 2016 Gesh, trying to find a deal for March and so far I'm not seeing anything at all. I'm hoping for something on the Getaway in March doing the Western Carib. Has anyone done this in the past and know when a good time might be to see some price drops? I thought maybe booking my airfare before a cruise but I'm afraid all solo's may sail out before I see a price I'm happy with. Has anyone ever done this or am I crazy? I have an airline voucher...so it's burning a hole in my pocket. :p
zebra36 Posted December 5, 2016 #100 Share Posted December 5, 2016 RCI is currently going through their 1,2,3 promotion and have found that solo pricing on some cruises is at 150% vs normal(?) 200% rate. Though no great bargain may be worth a look.
