Paulxyz2004 Posted September 4, 2016 #27 Share Posted September 4, 2016 The only thing that I got in the Windjammer was a bad burn that sent me to the medical center after I picked up a tong that was so hot that I dropped it and my hand automatically went up and touched the heat lamp above the food. The picture shows the day after I got the burn. It was a little worse three days later . The ship's doctor gave me a band aid and told me to keep in dry. My doctor back home put me on a prescription antibiotic cream. But at least I wasn't charged on the ship for a visit to the medical center. Just be careful when picking up the tongs because as you can see they can get hot. I know that germs or Noro can be picked up anywhere. My concern is not so much as the things I touch as much as the food I eat. If someone who's sick uses the utensils and then they or someone else lays it on the food, then all the handwashing is useless. I realize that the crew can't monitor every pan constantly. I guess I was wondering why they don't seem to have a specific "holder" with each pan where the utensil could go. I know, I know, some people would still not use it. I just hate to see the handles on the food! I also don't like when someone hands me a cup with their fingers on the top of it. Call me crazy! I agree with you, the Problem is the cruiseline will not put the Utensils on the Food, but in a holder, or more likely on a plate in front of the Food. It´s the passengers placing them on the Food. It´s not the best Thing to do, but as I can´t Change it I´m not starting to worry about it too much. I´m much more at risk to get noro at my workplace, where noro is a daily occurance than on a cruise ship. I guess that´s why I´m not too concerned here. This was one disappointment I have with the newer ships. All the high tech, they can't find a place to put utensils in a buffet? I've seen plenty of times people try to put the utensil on the side of the bin, but it slips into the food. It doesn't seem that it would be hard to find a better solution. robtulipe Posted September 4, 2016 #33 Share Posted September 4, 2016 (edited) What I did in the Windjammer Marketplace on our last two cruises, which were on Anthem, was to serve myself, leave my plate at our table and go rewash my hands at the wash station at one of the two entrances which was easy and quick to do. I know we're all concerned about norovirus and we should all wash our hands especially after we go through the line and handle all the utensils, but it looks like they are just laying across the food and in many cases the top (where it is held) is directly on the food itself! Since the whole hand washing thing and norovirus is SO significant (and such a problem) WHY would RC allow this and not be more proactive in utensil placement. Is there anything I can do (I always take precautions) short of simply not eating there the entire trip. I haven't cruised on RC before and I (like everyone else) don't want to waste my vacation (and money) by getting sick. I didn't want to have to just eat in MDR every meal and I don't have the extra cash for specialty venues. Any thoughts? other than ones that would be useless and demeaning. This made my DH and I chuckle. We have been battling this issue since we started cruising and no change on it so far.:eek: They do have smaller bowls on some or all ships now, so the tongs don't fall 'completely' into the salad bowl. Makes no sense we know. Even if they fall on the ground some passengers will pick them back up and they continue to be used. OR the staff changes the bowl with Fresh Food and then They put the Tongs on top of the food!!! Buns, salad etc. we have seen it done. It has been like banging our heads against a wall telling the supervisors what we are trying to convey to them. Germs on tongs go onto the food??
