Adelaide Sightseeing

When we've cruised to NZ there have been people selling tours at the various ports when you get off the ship. Has anyone who has been to Adelaide by cruise ship noticed if tours can be purchased at the dock?

I haven't ever seen tours on sale in the terminal in Adelaide. There is a railway station only a few hundred metres from the ship, so it is easy to travel into the centre of Adelaide, but that isn't a tour. If you want a private tour, it would be best to pre-arrange on the internet.

If you catch the train make sure you go very early, or later in the morning. It was standing room only cheek to jowl when we last got on. The train was so crowded the locals were not able to get on at their regular stops. That was last November so I don't know if it has improved.

If you have a pension card, you get the train trip for free, just remember to start the return journey by 3pm.

From the city you can catch a tram to Glenelg, which is nice.

Seniors also travel for free. Last time we were in Adelaide, on the return trip, railway staff just ushered all cruiseship passengers straight onto the train.:)

The port is really well organised for you to get into Adelaide by yourself unless you want to take a tour out of town to the vineyards or something. It's one of the best organised ports for cruise passengers that you'll find and once in Adelaide the choice is yours.

The queues were incredible getting back on the ship though. It may not always be like this but on our cruise we lined up all the way from the train. There's no sun protection outside the port building so make sure you have a hat and some water on the return journey.

If you get the train into Adelaide, then walk over the bridge and do a tour of Adelaide Oval. The area around there is nice. There is senior discount for the Oval tour. The tram ride to Glenelg is nice as already mentioned. Unless you really want to go to the wine area I would just wonder around Adelaide. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide.

If you decide to tour independently, you might like to go to the zoo to see the Pandas. We spent most of a day there. The zoo is an easy walk through the Botanical Gardens from the city.

Another place we enjoyed was Adelaide Central Market, with 80 stalls and great places to eat.

On our visit to Adelaide on the Solstice we caught the train into town from the port. The train is about 50 metres from where the ship ties up. For $A10 one has unlimited travel on public transport. We also went to the zoo to see the pandas and there is a free bus just around the corner of the station which takes you past the zoo. Seniors discounts are available at the zoo which was great and the discount is not just restricted to Australians. By taking the train and bus we got to the zoo before the "Official" cruise bus. Cost of cruise bus only to and from zoo was $US30.
