Does anyone know if there is an ATM on the Crown Princess?

I seem to remember a Princess ship that I was on a few years ago had one in the casino. Was wondering if I could get cash onboard for my South American excursions.

Thank you.

If there is an ATM onboard, you'll experience the absolute worst exchange rates anywhere. You're much better off using your debit card to obtain cash in ATMs shoreside.

Use a debit card that charges no international exchange fees and reimburses for ATM fees. Some financial institutions charge up to 3% or more tacked onto the rate of exchange.

We took our last South American cruise in 2012. If I remember correctly the on board ATM's were unavailable. It was mentioned that laws in the countries we visited prohibited Princess from dispensing local currencies from the ATM's. Other than Brazil where we started our cruise, and stayed a few days, we did not need any local currencies in other ports. US$ in clean new bills were accepted by private tour guides. Credit cards are also widely accepted.

If your private excursions in South America require payment in US Dollars you need to bring enough with you from home. Though there are many posts of a "workaround" around the system obtaining cash in the Casino may result in your card being processed as a cash advance rather than a debit withdrawal, with the requisite transaction fees and immediate finance charges. And bureaus d' change in South America will first require you to purchase local currency then convert to $US--and in Argentina especially the "official" exchange rate will net you barely half of what the "underground/handshake" rate your guide happily accepts will.

So invest in a money belt or neck pouch to wear until you can put your cash in the safe on board. Easier, cheaper and no worries about taking time out of your cruise for money matters.

If you want US $, there will be an ATM (although it is not guarteed to be working when you need it). Works just like an ATM on shore, complete with a service charge of about $6.

If you want local currency, there may be a currency exchange machine (also not guaranteed to be working) where you put currency in and get another currency out, losing about 15% of the value of your money due to a poor exchange rate and a service charge.
