Cruise to Nowhere

Recommended Posts

Hi

Have a family member on board the Explorer which left last night and is due to return Sunday morning. To and from the OPT.

Just curious as to how far up and down the coast they cruise?

Do they just do loops? Are these cruises a bit rockier than cruises that are heading to a specific destination?

p.s. we had some spectacular lightning here in Sydney last night - imagine they got a good view of it from the ship.

These three day "booze cruises" usually have a lot of the guests "doing loops" but they just usually cruise around at a low speed up and down the coast or wherever they feel like going and obviously picking the best weather/sea conditions.

We used to call "Junior Bridge staff choice"" . The 2nd and 3rd officers would practice course setting and maneuvering the ship. On one Mexico cruises they did this for their practice.

She's currently off Seal Rocks. You can watch her progress here. http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:153/centery:-33/zoom:10

That storm passed right over our place. One lightning strike must have been quite close, the sound of it striking was so loud I nearly jumped out of my skin! The storm actually seemed to intensify as it left the coast so would have been very spectacular from Explorer.

We have done a few of these and it really depends on the weather.

  1. On one trip we had fine weather the whole time and we went up as far as Byron Bay before heading back.
  2. On another there was a weather front so we went up as far as Port Macquarie and then looped down to Eden before heading back. Always maintaining the sunny patches of weather.
  3. With another we just headed straight out east and then looped down to Wollongong then up to around Newcastle before heading back into Sydney.
