Wearable Medallions??

I am one who hates change.....however we can't avoid it. This will prob be the norm in years to come both at sea and shore side. Look at how much we can do with our smart phones. Some don't even carry their credit cards any more. They just use their phone to pay. Change is coming might as well grin and bear it. There is not much we can do to stop it.

Our phones go in the safe as we leave and stay off until we return. This is the only time we totally unplug.

 

Anyone out there have odds on these tablets slowly replace crew? If that happened, I guess they could not only reduce costs but use that space for pax revenue...

 

I hope that's not where this is headed but its likely imo as cruising becomes more popular.

Much like the keyless entry for my Nissan, just put the controller in my pocket, and I can unlock the car, and start it, without pulling out a key. Very convenient. Place the medallion in your pocket and let it do the work....

This is their version of the Disney Magic Band...I love the idea and hope we see it rolled out soon.

So much easier than carrying cards around....It's what I love about going to WDW or cruising on DCL...you just swipe your wrist and Voila!

 

On my only Disney Dream cruise a few years back, when I found my cabin, I stood at the door wondering how to use the key card because there was no slot to put it in.

 

Luckily, a crew member came by and just held my card near the door lock so I could gain entry. DUH!

 

I'm guessing that the Disney Band has replaced this?

Exactly!! That's also how our car works. We love it. As for people worrying about "Big Brother" tracking their every move, are they doing something they shouldn't be doing or at a place they shouldn't be?? Google already tracks our every move on our phone and that doesn't bother us. I think the medallions are a great idea and it's good to see Carnival Corp out front leading this technology.

The band is optional, you can also still use the card. As I passholder I get both.

As a followup to my satirical post about having a chip implanted subdermally for the duration of the cruise, consider the following:

 

The chip can send images to one's brain, so that all cruisers in the MDR will be wearing the type of clothes you imagined they would be, especially on "elegant" night;

 

The chip can block images at the buffet of people overstuffing their plates and then leaving after taking just a bite of everything to taste.

 

The chip can block your olfactory nerve from smelling casino smoke;

 

The chip can signal to the photographers that they should use their invisibility cloak when taking your picture;

 

The chip can make the buffet food look and taste more appetizing;

 

The chip can allow you to avoid Guest Services and speak directly to the Captain's hologram if you have an issue or complaint;

 

The chip will release a small amount of a hypnotic whenever you have to wait for something, so the actual amount of wait time will seem much less;

 

The chip will release a dose of a tranquilizer whenever you check your on board account or are considering a hefty on board purchase;

 

The chip will make your cruise seem the most memorable and fun cruise you have ever taken. I call it a cruising "westworld".

We love using the bands at Disney World so we are looking forward to them on the ships! Hopefully they will give everyone a option or make them so they can be placed on a lanyard as well.

Personally, I hate the idea. We're divers and we dive at every port. I wonder how those things would hold up being as damp or wet as they would get on a dive excursion. They don't have to go in the water with us to get wet. I don't want to be wearing their "jewelry" and I don't carry my smart phone with me on a cruise. I much prefer a card that you can't damage.

Again, folks, by the time this gets to Carnival ships, it will be version Medallion 259.125. And want be anything like this beta model, in looks or functionality. (Unless of course CCL decides it's best to save $ and just recycles the first ones issued:eek:)

All these newfangled gadgets confuse me. I don't even use a smart phone. Have a jitterbug to call in or out for emergencies only. I almost never turn it on. Have trouble with the tomtom I got. Can't figure out half of social media fb.

I'm going to assume that the move to this is for the same reason why sunshine and Vista are testing out the new S&S system. I see this as another cost cut at the terminal and also leading to faster "check in" and embarkation times. I had always wanted to try the magic bands at Disney. Unfortunately we missed that by just a few months.

Don't like the idea. This is just a way of gaining more income by Carnival in my opinion.

 

They need to think about theft issues. I do not see this as safe.

Do the Disney bands have any exposed metal? DD has severe metal allergies. Even plastic watches have a metal plate covering the battery.

No there is no exposed metal on the disney magic bands. They are a softer/ bendy plastic. One of my twins wrists does the same thing with watches and he had no problem with his magic band ( wore it for 10 days ).

 

Having the magic band was so much easier than dragging out the tickets every time we needed to show it for something, like passes/ dining credits and payments etc. I didn't have to keep kids tickets like I did their cruise key cards either because they could wear it on their wrist!

And just wait until it crashes. Can't get into your stateroom, into the bathrooms, can't buy a drink, go ashore, Gamble (there will be a manual backup for that!)
