Lingalang Posted February 19, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 19, 2017 We are scheduled to travel on Viking Sky Apr.15/17 and several of the ladies taking our cruise enjoy playing Mahjong. Does anyone know if Viking has game sets on board? They are far too heavy to pack in luggage. Thanks, Linda
Alicomp Posted February 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 20, 2017 They didn't have them on the Viking Sea in December. If Viking is reading this thread, it would be nice to have a few sets, especially on cruises with multiple sea days. Alice
Rare Peregrina651 Posted February 20, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2017 Perhaps the folks at tellus@vikingcruises.com could facilitate this. Why not write them and ask?

I will be traveling on the Viking of the Sea on March 26th and taking your advise I just emailed Viking Ocean and asked if they could obtain a few sets for us. Thanks so much for that suggestion. Lingalang Posted February 20, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted February 20, 2017 Thanks Peregrina651 for your suggestion to contact Viking at tellus@vikingcruises.com My sister, Debi, also on our cruise, sent a request and was advised to bring her own. I don't believe Viking realizes how heavy these sets are (10-15 lbs). I have sent in my request and also advised that on our Viking River cruise in China Aug/2013, there were several sets on board and they were well utilized by passengers. The cost of $60-$75 per set would be a modest investment by Viking resulting in customer satisfaction. The sets could be signed out at the customer service desk. Little risk to Viking. Come on Viking. Let's do it.

cmaasfamily Posted February 21, 2017 #8 Share Posted February 21, 2017 Don't know if it'll satisfy your needs but there are number of tables with seating for four located in the atrium that had large 'virtual' touchscreens. They had a variety of games including mahjongg, chess and others. Didn't seem them used much - I don't think many folks noticed - but they were there. We played scrabble and backgammon with the 'real' sets they provided.
Lingalang Posted February 22, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted February 22, 2017 Good news.Viking just called me to let me know that they will be supplying Mahjong sets on board the Sky. Assume the sister ships will also be included in this action. Thanks, Viking for listening.

Rare Azulann Posted February 23, 2017 #12 Share Posted February 23, 2017 I would love to learn to play that game. I will be on the Viking Sea next year with six sea days in row.. It would be fun to play in the afternoon for awhile. How many can play that game at a time?

You could also ask on the roll call for your sailing if there are any other mahjong players. It is a small roll call right now, so I would wait until it gets closer to your sail date to ask, so that more people may see it. Don't freak out when you see that you have already posted there. CC has this new thing; it is "auto-posting" for new members on their roll calls.
Youn2122 Posted August 11 #16 Share Posted August 11 STAR September 2024 Iceland to Barcelona cruise. My wife loves mahjong. Any players going to be on board or organized games that anyone knows of. I would think as popular as it is Viking would have table set aside maybe(?).

You can play in the Chef Table dining room, in addition to the card game tables next to the Future Cruise Reservation area. For the mahjong set, you can borrow from Viking. The only problem is that there is so much to do onboard at sea or on shore days that I find it hard to squeeze time for mahjong.
Youn2122 Posted August 11 #18 Share Posted August 11 Thanks for replying. Do people usually just meet there and get a game going or is it more organized? We figure on one of the days at sea it would be a great activity.
SoCray4Cruz Posted August 11 #19 Share Posted August 11 On a sea day, there will be a notice in the Viking daily as to what times the chefs table is open for games.
Rare OneSixtyToOne Posted August 11 #20 Share Posted August 11 We are currently on the Venus and tomorrow is a sea day. Manfredi’s has been reserved from 9AM-2PM for un-hosted informal mahjong. Games provided.
Youn2122 Posted August 11 #21 Share Posted August 11 Thanks so much. We figured they would have something organized given how popular it is!

Unhosted means they have set aside a time and place to play. The rest is up to the players to figure out. Five hours is a big windows. Someone has to figure out how to get players to show up at a specific time rather than to just wander in when they feel like it. (Personally, I suggest an early start so that you are done by lunchtime). I'm not a player but it seems to me that someone needs to take the bull by the horns, get Guest Services to announce a start time for mahjong and maybe even organize a sign up so you know how many tables and how sets will be needed. Viking is usually willing to help anyone with a plan.
ural guy Posted August 12 #23 Share Posted August 12 I have never played Mahjong, but I am glad to see that Viking has reversed it's stance from 2017 on supplying the game set. Enjoy. 👍
HDS Posted August 13 #24 Share Posted August 13 Does Viking offer opportunity for card players, bridge players in particular, to meet and organize a game?
Rare Vacation Nut Posted September 2 #25 Share Posted September 2 On all sea days on Viking Mars, games were available in Chef’s Table dining riom from 10:00-4 pm. However, most people arrived at 10:00 andplayed until 1:00. Generally there were 2 bridge tables and 3 mahjongg tables. Make sure you take your mahjongg card on vacation with you.
