Good morning,

What experiences have you had with tipping? Is it better to hand a waiter/bartender a $1 or to write it on the ticket?

There is an automatic 15% tip added to every bar bill so IF you give cash you are giving more than 15%. We only do that if we use a particular bartender often. Then we might give some extra cash but not for every drink.

18% I believe, last time I checked.

Same here.

Normally on a ship when we tip above the auto-grats and above the 15% at bars we tip that extra in cash.

Before a cruise I calculate how much we might need for room service, bar service, stewards and waiters, porters and wheelchair pushers for handicap boarding .... then I get enough to cover that in small bills.

None of those are required but I can afford and enjoy doing it. We don't give huge extra tips but the staff do know they are appreciated.

Are ticketed tips appreciated as much as cash? We tip $1-$3 on our ticket for bartenders we go to often... but prefer not to carry cash. Just wondering..

Taking my first cruise in two weeks (squeeeee!) and I am planning to tip in cash. I have worked in the service industry and I know that bartenders in particular remember tips & you will typically we well taken care of by tipping a larger bill up front and this is my plan for my cruise. Maybe it means my drinks will be a little stronger. Maybe I'll get my drinks faster. And maybe I won't be treated any differently but $10 is worth it to me for a chance, haha. I am going to break a $100 bill into $1's and $5's before I go, just for tipping bartenders, room service, tour guides, etc.

to be honest, if I order a beer in the states and pay $5, I would be embarrassed to tip .75. In today's restaurant industry 15% is not a good tip anymore

Agreed. I'm used to ordering, say, a $7 drink for myself and a $3 beer for my husband. So with that first order I'll slide the bartender a $10 bill. At the end of the night say our tab is $75, and our service has been good, I will usually add on another $15-20. Plus the $10 tip I fronted.

For myself yes because we do not share tips.I think tips are pooled onboard but not 100% so your favorite bartender or server may not be getting your tip just a piece of it. I'm sure they appreciate it either way

This is what smart people do in regards to drinking:)

I can speak for myself and many of my co workers, we remember tippers and always remember the ones that don't tip even more.I realize that tips are included so while cruising we all do what's best for us and in my drinking days a $20 and a friendly hello on the first day works wonders !!

$20 upfront is insane...don't do it.

Your "pours" will be generous, whether you bribe someone , or not. Your service will be good to great...

You've PAID your tips. If someone is friendly and goes a step above...give them extra on the last evening, as is the custom on cruises. You don't "tip as you go" or "tip upfront"....the last evening on a cruise is when tips are extended. If you feel the need to tip more than you've already tipped, that's the time to do it.

Carnival is a 15% gratuity. IIRC RCI is 18%.

The tips are pooled and distributed through out all the bartenders and waiters, just like the Bottomless Bubbles gratuities are.

Service people hate to hear this, but I consider a tip above 10% only for superior service. If prices are inflated beyond the pale like on cruise ships and hotel bars an even smaller percentage is customary. The cruises I have taken always have 15% added to even the smallest tabs. That is a King's ransom in the countries where many of the crew hail from.

I don't know how to let people who think they can bribe a bar tender with a larger tip to get faster service or a "generous" pour that is just flat wrong. I am a share owner of two cruise lines. I read the financials carefully, and have closely observed the food and beverage control aboard ships and in hotel bars. There is minimal shrinkage caused by employee theft. Managers must account for how much liquor is bought, and how much is sold. They watch everyone, and there is a paper or electronic trail for each transaction. Some bars have more TV cameras than a casino.

As for cash v. check, it just does not matter. Geld ist geld. There is a small percentage of any credit card charge that goes to the payment processor, however, that vig is calculated in the price of the service, so a service worker who gets a dollar on a check gets the full dollar, and the employer picks up the .02 vig.

Now let's look at how much a bar tender should make. On land a hotel bartender gets $12/hr +food +72% of health insurance. At sea they get about $4/hr +room, board, laundry, transportation home, vacation. When penciled out it is about the same $20/hr inclusive for each position. That in mind, if you order a "ship wreck" expect a tab of $18 + $2.70 tip. It takes them four minutes to take the order, mix the drink, garnish, serve, and wash the glass. Your tip is adding $40.50/hr to their $20/hr compensation. How many people make $60.50/hr? Is it really necessary to add an extra dollar bringing them to $75/hr for the four minutes serving you?

We tip on the ticket and we always try to go to the same few bartenders. Our favorites always learn our names and drink preferences by the second day. And the pours are strong and sometimes get too strong. Twice I have had to ask a bartender for a weaker drink. I have never carried cash onboard. That is one of the nice things about cruising. We do tip in cash on the last night if we feel someone has gone over and above.

We do not tip more than the 15% added, but on the last night I will find the great servers/bartenders from the week and give them something extra $20-$40 cash. It may not be much to some but it sure is to me. Room service we always give a couple bucks.
