Taxi Naples to pompeii

What's the approximate price for a taxi from Naples cruise port to Pompeii?

Also how easy is it to find a taxi both there and back?

If it's not too expensive we're considering using this as an alternative to public transport which gets mixed reviews

there will be a line of taxis outside the port and plenty of drivers offering rides and keen to impress you how good their English is!

There is a printed list inside the cab of the fixed prices to and from main sites such as Pompeii Herculaneum and Vesuvius

Last year we were taxied to Herculaneum had 2 hours there until the taxi driver picked us up at pre arranged spot and we paid when he dropped us back at ship

It was 70 euros-Pompeii will be a bit more as it is further away

Don't really want the taxi to wait..just take us there then we can catch one back when suits us

One way will be a little more difficult as the drivers are looking for the larger r/t fares.

the taxi doesn't wait-it drops you off ,does more fares then returns at specified time for you[we had his card in case needed to adjust pick up time]

incidently we had a fixed fare but the meter was also running and the fare shown was pretty close to actual fare paid

You'll pay the round trip fare even if you only go one way, as out of town fares are doubled because the driver cannot take other fares on the way back (a Naples cab cannot pickup fares in Pompei). You would also pay a round trip fare for a Pompei cab to take you back to Naples, for the same reason.

You can probably negotiate a longer stay at the ruins, although they may/probably will want to charge more for that.

By the way, the current (2017) fare is still €90: http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/IT/IDPagina/1193

Just heard that the trains a bit basic..also what's the easiest way to get to the station from the dock

The Circumvesuviana train is like a subway car that runs on ground level/above ground tracks. It stops every 3-5 minutes along the way.

Your best chance for getting one of the few seats on this train is to get on at the start of the line, Porta Nolana. This station is a mile and a quarter from the cruise port and you can get there by taking bus #151: http://www.anm.it/images/stories/PDF/linee_urbane/linea_151_mag_17.pdf. There is a stop on Via Cristoforo Colombo (the main street in front of the cruise port) just to the right as you leave the port.

There is a SITA bus that goes to Pompei from the port, the depot and ticket office are just one third of a mile from the cruise port at Piazza Immacolatella. I prefer this to the train because it's closer to the port, most cruise passengers haven't heard of it so it's not crowded, you're pretty much guaranteed a seat, the AC works, and the threat of petty crime is lower because there's no escape route for the thief after the attack (there's one stop in Naples after departure, then the bus travels non-stop to Pompei).

The problem with the bus is that there are so few departures, vs. two per hour for the train. If your timing aligns with the bus it's a great alternative. Schedule here: http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/archivio/Download/corse/sitasud/Campania/Salerno/32d0a018-38cc-4b4f-b650-b6186648cdf5_5001_2016.pdf/0

You'll see that there are buses at 7:30 AM (Monday-Friday in the summer, from July 28 - Sept. 2 only), 8 AM and 9:30 AM.

The bus stop in Pompei is two-tenths of a mile from the Porta Marina entrance to the ruins (on Via Plinio in front of Camping Spartacus) while the Circumvesuviana Pompei Scavi station is just around the corner from the same entrance.

If you want to be extra efficient, regardless of whether you take the train or the bus to Pompei, you can organize your visit in one direction and depart from the Anfiteatro entrance/exit, taking the Circumvesuviana Poggiomarino line back to Naples. This line runs less frequently than the Sorrento line (the one that stops at the Porta Marina entrance), only one per hour, but it's far less crowded.

Just want to confirm - 12 eur per person return, but taxi for 4 is 90 eur return. If I am correct might just go taxi to make it easy and get to site early before it gets too hot.

To confirm, a taxi for up to four people from Naples to Pompei and back, with a two hour stop at the ruins, is €90. You can download the taxi fare chart from the city's web site here: http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/IT/IDPagina/1193 The pdf file under the cartoon of a taxi is in both Italian and English.

The bus to Pompei is €2,60 each way or €5,20 round trip. The ticket is the NA-3 Aziendale.

The train is also €2,60 each way but if you take either a tram or the metro to the train station, as most do, the fare is €3,20 each way or €6,40 round trip. The ticket is the NA-3 Integrato.

I don't know where poster #14 came up with €12 round trip, perhaps they're confusing it with Rome?

We were in Naples last week. We took an express shuttle that goes to Pompeii and Herculaneum called Pompeii Sightseeing. If you take the Red line it goes to Pompeii for 18 Euros round trip and 15 Euros round trip for Herculeanium. Just walk through the parking lot passed all the the taxis and you will see it. It starts at 9:00 AM and leaves on the hour. It was very easy and a fraction of the price off a taxi.

Did you buy tickets on the bus?

We did not want to take the train as we heard stories of pickpockets and robberies. The bus was very easy as we picked it up in the cruise terminal parking lot and it dropped off in front of Pompeii an Herculaneum. According to the schedule, it leaves from the terminal and Pompeii every hour from 9:AM and 5 PM. In reality, the driver told us what time the pick ups would be. We bought the round trip tickets right outside of the bus. For us, it was all pluses and no minuses as we did not want to take the train.

It sounds like some of the pluses of this bus/van service are:

  • pick up and drop off right near the cruise port
  • drop off right at the ruins
  • ? was a seat guaranteed?
  • ? did the AC work?

Minuses might be:

  • three times the price of the public bus or the train
  • only one run per hour, vs. two or three for the train

We were there last month. We used a shuttle van service, can't remember the name exactly but it was run by the hop on hop off company. The vans are red and leave on the hour and leave Pompeii on the hour. I thought the price was 16 but it could of been 18. We were happy with their service. You buy the tickets at the van in the parking lot out past the taxis.
