Changing rooms

I am cruising for the 1st time and going with a group. The group is of 2 couples, 1 single, and my family of 3. When the person in charge of booking the cruise booked our room they put my husband in the room with the single person so he would not be responsible to by 2 spots and the child in my room. The problem is I want to buy the drink package for me and my husband but don't want to be responsible for buying one for the person he is rooming with. Am I able to change my roommate to be my husband and put my child in the single persons room without having to pay a cancellation fee for both of them?

As I understand it

Three cabins

1 Couple

2 Wife and child

3 Husband and Friend

Assuming all but child are over 21

Does Friend want the Cheers package? If no, then Husband has a problem and you'll need to switch people around. There are only a few rates that you'll incur a penalty to change pax.

If Friend DOES want Cheers then it's a simple matter of arranging separate credit cards (or cash) for each person in the cabin. Can set this up when doing online check in.

There is no problem with your husband moving into your cabin. No one cares who is in each cabin.

I believe each person in the cabin MUST buy the drink package. It is only for one person and you CANNOT buy anyone else a drink. The waiters make sure you don't do this.

Did you know to make the drink package worthwhile everyone who has one should buy 7 or 8 drinks each day? You can get a bucket of beer for less than the cost of each bottle, think that's now 4 bottles in a bucket of ice. A friend puts what he doesn't drink in his cabin fridge for later, doesn't drink all 4 at once. And, you can share a beer bucket.

We don't drink during the day, only evenings, so the package is not worth it for us. We also buy the 'HOUSE" brands of each drink. The 'house brand is lower than other drinks. Just ask what it is - for gin, it's Bombay gin. ,If you don't specify the brand of gin, bourbon, etc. ,the waiter can get you a more $$$ drink for a bigger tip. 15% is added to all drinks.

And, when I bought a wine package I didn't know the tip was not included so it was added to what I thought was the total price for 5 bottles of wine. Don't know if the tip for package is added to the cost when you see your final bill.

I don't understand. Why don't you put this error on the person who made the reservations and have them make it right? Why would anyone put your husband anywhere except in the cabin with you?

OP said the husband was put with the single so the single didn't have to 'by 2 spots' aka buy two spots/pay the single supplement. As to why the child wasn't put with the single (the only other odd man out, so to speak), the person who made the reservation probably figured having the child with their parent was more acceptable than not.

I tend to agree. Every cruise line I've dealt with has a reduced fare for 3rd & 4th persons in a cabin. Assuming nothing else is going on, then the way this is set up the single person is avoiding the single supplement, but you are actually paying more than if all three of you were in one cabin. For all I know an adjustment is being made by the person coordinating this.

do you know the single person?

Would you trust putting your child with them ?

If not when you check in have your hubby use his CC & the single person use their own credit card

That way all charges go to the respective CC

Will your hubby be sleeping in your cabin or staying in the other one?

Things can be rearranged once onboard no one cares just hope there is a bed for the child

Thanks for this.... No, no supplement is being made. I just assumed that each person paid the same price. I will definitely have to check into this.

yes. it is my brother. So I definitely trust him. The plan was for my family to all sleep together just make it a little cheaper for my bro so he could come to. I just dont want to be stuck buying him a drink package. He is not planning on getting one.

First decide what sleeping arrangements you're looking for. Paying extra so your child sleeps in the same cabin as your brother, giving you and your husband privacy might make some sense.

Pricing. Think of a hotel. Typically priced at double occupancy. One person in a room pays the same price as two people in the room next door. A third person in the second room might be free. Moving the third person into the single room lowers the average price in half. All you've done is have the family of three subsidize the single.

Think cruise ship. Same principal. Food is included. Sometimes the cost for a 3rd and 4th passenger is enough to offset additional port fees and food costs. Sometimes the cruise line is running a promotion and absorbs some of those costs. The ship is staffed for a fully sold cruise. The actual food only cost for an additional passenger is nominal.

Single supplement is the reverse. The cruise line is saving a few dollars in food costs but losing a few dollars in revenue. Two people will generally spend more money then one person on extras like photo, spa, shore excursions. casino...That's why cruise lines frequently have a single supplement that is basically paying for an extra passenger.

An issue not mentioned. It's OK (more or less) to switch passengers. Only a one way switch, going from 2 to 3 in a cabin, maybe not. One issue is the cabin might not be configured to sleep 3. Another issue is "muster". Each passenger, based on cabin, is assigned to a muster station (emergency meeting place. Lifeboat capacity is determined by the number of passengers in that area. That's why not every cabin which can accommodate 4 passengers can be sold as a quad. There will be enough beds but not enough room in the life boats.

Suggestion. Go to Carnivals website. Price out your brothers cabin as a single. Price it out as a double. Price your cabin as a double then as a quad. The extra money your spending subsidizing your brother might be alternatively spent upgrading your families cabin.

Conclusion. If your goal is to subsidize your brother, without being obvious, so he can financially join you then list your child as being in his cabin. Otherwise book your child in your cabin, possibly upgrading your money with the money you'll be saving.
