Question about switching cabin keys and cheers

Wow y'all are something else! This question has been asked a million times and I can't recall the last time an OP has been jumped on like this. Usually it's just "Go to GS and get a duplicate key" or people offering up ways to get around couples having to purchase Cheers by having spouses switch cabins when traveling with another couple but only the guys drink or whatever. Or how to get Past Guest Rates or Casino Rates for 2 cabins when only one couple qualifies. People are quick to chime in for them to do a "wife swap" on paper and get extra keys later so that both cabins can get the lower rate. For some reason that isn't the case here. Not sure why.

FYI when we went on Conquest and I booked by calling the 800 number, they automatically put an adult in each cabin although technically they didn't have to. They said it's easier that way and keeps the computer from flagging it or something. They were 17 and 14 at the time. We did not purchase Cheers as we aren't big drinkers. The room steward knew when we arrived what the plan was - us in the OV and the boys across the hall in an inside and had the beds made up accordingly.

If the OP was looking to buy one package and split it, then I would have an issue. However, as it stands they aren't. So the correct answer is to book one adult in each cabin and then get extra "Key only" cards for access to the other cabin which is exactly what we did.

I do believe that anyone caught sharing their Cheers package should have it revoked immediately with no refund so I will say that. However, if you are truly looking to follow the rules and not share, then perfect! Enjoy your cruise!

The OP is following the rules and it's working to the OP's advantage. If there were a problem with it Carnival would change the policy. They're a business; they know the consequences of their rules and policies. They're doing pretty good these days. The OP has two staterooms with four cruisers; one adult's getting Cheers! and one's buying drinks. Carnival has determined this is a profitable arrangement. The kids learn that sometimes following the rules provides beneficial loopholes. Maybe they'll end up being lawyers? All will be well. Here's wishing the OP a bon voyage!

The only thing this whole thread highlights is the sheer insanity of Carnival by making all person's 21 and older in the same cabin purchase the program.

If they didn't then I would imagine the sharing would be wide spread.

Don't worry about the trolls stirring the cheers pot. I had the same scenario last month on the Dream. I purchased the cheers package prior to the cruise. Once on board we went to guest services and they provided my wife with a key to my room and my son(who was assigned to my room) a key to the other room. No questions ask, no problems with cheers. Just do it and cruise on.

It has nothing to do with one cabin. Each adult had to book a room because the kids can't book their own. There is no loophole that is being taking advantage of as it's Carnival's own booking policy.

THIS! ^^^^^

I really wonder if all the morality police are free of sin. Have they ever went over the speed limit? I mean even 1 mile over is breaking the rules. That's just one thing. The OP is not trying to get away with anything. By Carnival's policy, an adult must be in a room with minors. They need two rooms, where is the loophole?

An adult must be in the room with minors and then moving the adult to the other cabin appears to some as a loophole. I have read threads where the two husbands will be booked in one cabin and the two wives in the other so that only one of each pair need purchase Cheers. Again, this appears to be a loophole but it is consistent with the rules and CCL allows it. Other cruise lines close the door on this type of thing by requiring all adults on the same reservation to have Cheers, but CCL doesn't require that. I personally have no heartburn with it, just explaining how some can perceive it.

I can't agree with the speed limit analogy. Two wrongs don't make a right and it doesn't matter what someone does outside of the cruise. Just because someone chooses or not to obey or follow other rules really has no bearing in any other capacity in relation to the current situation. Nor does it make them a better or worse person. In this scenario, what OP is proposing is well within Carnival's guidelines and I have no idea why some feel animosity towards them when it's perfectly "legal".

Thanks! I have to say I'm shocked at how some people have acted. Especially the poster who felt the need to comment on what I was teaching my children. It wasn't even something I was "trying to do". I was just asking how it would work so I knew.

I can totally understand why people are hesitant to ask questions.

I understand that is the logic behind the requirement but I don't think it actually would be. Neither RC or Princess requires all adults in a statement to purchase the packages and the other person just pays for their drinks individually. I think that they would catch on pretty quick if you were trying to share the way that all drinks all electronically accounted for. :)

NCL "gives away" the drink packages as an incentive to book, AND they allow you to get 2 drinks at a time. Actually, that's really nice, because I could go to the bar and order myself and my wife a drink without either having her come with me or digging around in her bag for her card.

Back to this post -- even if it is a loophole as some suggest, Carnival is a smart business and they know about it. The OP is not being "immoral" or anything, and if the loophole works to her advantage, more power to her! You win some, you lose some. In this case, she's winning, bigly!

Thank you. This is what I think as well.

Really dont see what the big deal here, if she has 2 cabins, one adult in each she is following the rules. This is silly if ppl are going to share the cheers (which the OP is not) they certainly can do it without the cabin rule! That's why they have a 12 drink limit and a 5 minute wait rule (that and keeping ppl from excessive drinking). Personally I would rather they put more effort into entertainment, activities on the ship and food service than have to have staff policing everyone!

To the OP, get your extra keys and enjoy your cruise! :D

We have done this in the past. My 17 year old and 10 year old stayed in one room and me and hubby in the other but they made us put an adult on the reservation in each room even tho I told the rep that booked it we would not sleep that way. He said it didn't matter. Hubby got cheers and I didn't. I carried my 10 year olds key as I had him and hubby booked in one room. He didn't need a key so I never even had to go get an extra one. No big deal and you are not breaking any rules by doing this. Have a great cruise!!!

From post I've read, you need to ask for key card only. This will work the door and can't be used for Sign n Sail. Sign n Sail would be the original card you were given . That's my understanding.

Hate me if you want, but what the hell is the big difference with sharing anyway??? The limit is 15 alcoholic drinks. Why should Carnaval care WHO drinks the 15? I could see if it was unlimited, but the 15 is a hard limit. Now mind you, my wife and I both ALWAYS get the Cheers package so there's no sharing, but I mean, come on, it makes no sense when there is a hard limit. Just like on our cellphone plan, we have a data limit, and Verizon doesn't care who uses how much. I just see this as asinine.

But back to the OP, as has been said: You're not breaking any rules, you are following rules. Here's an example: two single cruisers meet up, and one has Cheers and the other one doesn't. They hit it off, and one decides to spend the entire cruise in the other's cabin for the duration 😇. Are they breaking rules because only one has paid for Cheers?

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. These self-righteous people need to look in the mirror and examine their own flaws.

If you drink 7 drinks and DW drinks 7 drinks you are within the 15 drink limit, but under your system CCL has sold one Cheers package, under their system they sell 2. Since offering Cheers is done primarily to make them more money the way that they have it set up makes perfect sense.

Wow that's kind of rude lol. We aren't trying to beat the system at all. We are a family of five and need 2 cabins. I need to be put on one and my hubby on the other.

It's a legitimate question. We won't be sharing it in any way. I would just like to know because it impacts our decision to buy it for hubby or not.

I guess if you don't want to buy 2 cheers packages then how about you pay for 2 cabins.

We are booked the same way on our upcoming cruise. One of our kids will be 18 but they want an adult over 21 (or maybe it's over 25....can't remember) booked in the room with the kids. So my husband is assigned the room with the younger two and my 18-year-old is assigned with me. Of course our plan is to switch my husband and daughter. However both my husband and I are purchasing the Cheers package anyway so my only issue is that if I get extra cards, I wonder if he can transfer the drink package to the new card. If we simply just get extra keys, he would have to keep up with two keys. I would rather all the cards have charging privileges. Makes it easier.

Your husband and daughter can do that right at guest services when you get on and they will give them new cards for the correct room.
