I usually tip $1 per drink unless the server/bartender acts like they're doing me a favor by serving me a drink. 99% of the time the servers/bartenders are prompt and polite but occasionally you get one that acts like they want to be anywhere other than at the job they're getting paid to do. They get zip from me and I move on to another area that has staff that are friendlier, then usually give them the tip that would have been given to the other guy.

To me ....

**Bribe = cash given before service to try to ensure good future service

**Gratuity = Tipping when services are rendered or after rendering

**Tipping some extra cash at the end IS a gratuity for services that were rendered over the course of the cruise.

Who tips before? not quite sure what your quote is saying. You go to bar, order a drink, receive the drink, get a bill, pay the bill and tip. Yes we tip the room steward and waiter at the end of the cruise is they did well. However, we were specifically talking about bar staff. Not a bribe, it';s a tip

I usually buy the package with the included gratuities and then find a bar and or bar tender/server or spot by the pool that I like and give a tip ($5-$10 depending on if I am alone or my husband is with me) on top of that to start. If they keep my drinks coming and I don't have to go running to find them, or have my drinks go completely empty all day, etc. then I will usually give an additional tip when I am done with that "spot." I feel that is plenty on top of the prepaid grats from the package. I a sure some will disagree though.

Just and FYI, from articles I've read- TIP started as an acronym for To Insure Promptness. A small sum was given to persons performing a service to insure quicker attention. Don't know if that's exactly true or not but it sounds plausible.

I bring lots of $1 bills and give one with each drink or round of drinks. If you give the extra tip in cash they can keep it. If you add it to the check it's pooled.

Is there a source for that? At most restaurants and bars the receipt indicates who the server or bartender was who handled the order, and they would receive any added tip.

I tend to stay in the casino when I drink. I take plenty of one dollar bills. I hand the receipt back with a one dollar bill. It doesn't take the servers long to figure out who does this. I never have to wait for a drink.

Agreed.

Here is why we don't tip with every drink. My wife doesn't like a heavy pour and sometime I don't either.

We tip extra at the end of the Cruise

If you like your drinks "weaker" just ask for a tall. They will make your drink in a pint glass if it's available at that bar. Also makes your drink last longer.

Sometimes. I tip an extra $1-2 (in cash) when I find a bartender that makes my drinks just the way I like. And I find that a bit of cash keeps the roving bartenders -- they are much more rare than in the past -- coming back more frequently.

There are folks who say the slip some cash to staff at the start of the cruise to ensure good service ... to me those "bribes" are not necessary :) A tip IS cash added after one is served

I stopped tipping $1 a drink long ago. Now I just wait until I know which bars we will frequent the most (casino always one) and tip the regular bartenders there $5 or $10 at different times throughout the cruise. Beats carrying a bunch of one's and they remember me quite well.

I’m same...there’s usually several that stand out and I do take cash to give them some extra, they remember my name and drink I like

This was not even something I thought to do until it came up on a thread. So....last cruise we tested it out......we had Cheers (which we won't do again because I figured out we spent 200.00 more as a couple then if we would have paid as we went. And trust me, we drank ALOT)....anyway, I tipped the Alchemy (our go to bar) bartenders 2.00 cash each time my husband and I ordered a drink.

Alchemy has become VERY popular and some evenings we could not get a stool and had to stand at the end of the bar. As soon as we walked up one of the bartenders noticed us, knew our drink order, and would just nod at us...meaning he will make them next. Was the service 10x's better than no tipping...no. But, I think it did help and I will continue this. The Alchemy bartenders make amazing, sometime complex drinks and they deserve it.

first of all when someone says"trust me", I can think of one, it's usually not true. I guess A LOT is less than 6 drinks a day which is break even with Cheers, especially in the Alchemy Bar where drinks are usually $10 and up.

But... It should be the opposite :)

The bartender makes your drinks and controls what goes in it liquor wise ;)

In my experience I get good drinks either way. When I tip a bartender extra I am hoping for better service if the bar is packed. I generally recognize the server because simply they are making it convenient and more enjoyable for me. I get to relax while they order the drink and bring it back to me in whatever comfy chair I've found.

I think with cheers, if I spend a lot of time at one bar and drink way more than the $50/per day, I should tip a little more. If I drink $100 worth of drinks per day, then the gratuity I paid with cheers comes to 7.5%. I don't mind spending an extra $20-30 over the course of a week on dollar tips here and there. I also don't blame anyone that never adds any, since that is how carnival set it up.

Most certainly I tip extra when I get a bartender that makes a drink just how I like it! We like Moscow Mules and are particular about the Ginger Beer used. We ordered them at the Alchemy and wasn't really impressed. When the bartender asked how we liked our drinks I mentioned that it was "off" and probably due to the Ginger Beer used. She made us new ones and added freshly grated ginger to give them more flavor and they were perfect! From then on anytime we'd come by for drinks she immediately grabbed the fresh ginger for ours. She also saw how I love olives so each time we sat at the bar she placed a dish of olives and nuts in front of us. After that first time we started tipping her a couples each order with an extra $5 now and then to show her we appreciated her personal attention.
