Toddler Question

i will be traveling with my toddler in November. What do parents do with potty training? Are they allowed to go in pool with swim diapers? What do you do at bedtime I was thinking of bringing extra pads for bed time so he won't wet bedding. Love to know what expierenced parents do in these situations.

Thank you

please keep your kiddo in pull ups or diapers at night.

My kid was day trained at 3, but it was after 4 when he finally night trained as well. He went on his first cruise just before he turned 4, and was most definitely wearing pull ups at night.

Please don't let your kid pee on the cruise ship beds, even if you are ok with him peeing all over his own bed at home.

Hello! I'll be bringing my 15 month old triplets on a Princess cruise in January.

We might get some nasty looks from other passengers

you won't get nasty looks unless you are letting your not-yet-potty-trained kids into the pool. Other than that - only nasty people would give nasty looks to people with kids. Pay them no mind.

Enjoy your vacation!

Don't forget to check out Family Cruising on cc, and Traveling with Children board on www.babycenter.com. A ton of good info!

Hello! I'll be bringing my 15 month old triplets on a Princess cruise in January. We won't be letting them swim per Princess policy but I have been advised we will be allowed in the youth center with the babies so they can play (as long as we are with them)

We might get some nasty looks from other passengers, but they don't know that I need a vacation and I'm entitled to one just as much as they are.

We will not be taking them into the main dining room as I can tell right away they (the kiddos) won't tolerate 2 hour dinners (which is my favorite thing about cruising). It is the Horizon Court for us every night, and its probably best that way for everyone.

The poster above me added tons of good ideas and hope they don't mind if I steal a few of them myself!

Enjoy your cruise with your children.. I am sure the ships photographers will love taking their pictures. Taking pictures of triplets sounds like picture taking that they would love to do and don't get the chance to often.

I am also taking a cruise in Jan. Hope to see you on board my cruise.

No swim diapers allowed for obvious reasons and also because the filtration system in ship pools is not like those on land pools. However on several of our recent cruises on Princess, Cunard and P&O we have seen children in the pools and hot tubs in swim diapers and one of them was the baby son of the captain!

Talking about setting an example. You should have reported the kid.

You said what I was thinking....thanks for bringing that up!

I can't speak for the regulations in the UK, but as far as the US, the ships' pools have as good a filtration system, and a better chlorination system than 90% of public pools on land. The CDC, which oversees ship's pools on ships calling at the US, studied several hundred public land pools and found 80% of them to be in violation, and about 30-40% of them would require immediate closure if they were to meet USPH/CDC standards. Pools on land must only meet local or state health codes. It is not the cruise line's policy that prohibits swim diapers, it is the USPH/CDC regulations, and the CDC is a world renown center for contagious diseases and their epidemiology.

I spoke with the people in charge of the youth center and they said non-potty trained children are not allowed in the kiddie pools for the same health reason they aren't allowed in the regular pools. Its not a big deal for us as my children aren't very fond of the water in swimming pools.

We are on a 15 day to Hawaii and I know that itinerary has even fewer kids than 7 day voyages, so its will mostly be older people. I'm just imagining a bunch of the scooter set raising their fists at me as my children toddle down the hallways about us being too darn slow. That would probably be the highlight of the entire voyage!!!

To corporate, with a picture. That kind of violation on a cruise calling in the US could get the Captain fired.

As I said have seen it happening on various cruiselines and the pool staff are obviously aware but do nothing.

There were babies in the pool on my last cruise with Princess. When I asked an officer by the pool who was in charge of making sure babies were not in the pool his response was "No one. We just assume people will follow the rule". I reminded him that it was in violation of the health code and he shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

When I got home, I wrote to Customer Service and suggested they be more pro active and put a LARGE sign near the pool indicating "no Babies" And in defense of the parents the sign by the pool was so small that it was easily missed. I also suggested they put a written notice in the rooms of anyone with a baby. But we all know the truth is no one on the ship wants to address the issue.

Actually, my niece was potty trained on a ship. They made big deal over the special toilet and the sound it makes.

Told her only big girls get to make the toilet make the special sound. She didn't have a daytime accident the whole trip.

We will show ours the toilet flushing as soon as we board the ship. I know my grandsons are going to be amused.

Somewhere on youtube, there must be a clip (with audio) to show the kids the giant whoosh

... before leaving home.

Thank you for everyone's comments. I think the biggest adjustment will be the sound of the toilet flushing. I think we will be fine and enjoy our vacation together .

Just wait til the little one is out of the bathroom to close the lid and flush.

My son was late 2s (and basically fully day time trained) when he went on his first cruise. We took one of the toilet rings for use in the cabin; we chose Carnival because they allow 2s and have a kid sized potty in the camp. So since you don’t have that and are actively potty training I would stick on the same schedule you are at home and make regular frequent trips back to the room.

At night we woke him before we went to sleep for another trip and we also limited fluids in the evening. The pull-ups took care of the rest. I really did not find it to be a big deal at all.

Wow, takes me back a few years! So not sure about the pool, but maybe a rubber padding for the bed? I would call Princess and inquire as to whether the room steward could supply one so you don’t have to pack one. (Perhaps ask about the pool policy, too)

Cruises have so many children on them...one would hope they are prepared for any occasion.

Also bring some absorbent pads to use throughout the room, put pull ups on in public areas ...adults should do this as well.

The general rule (for nearly all cruise lines) is that nobody in diapers is allowed in the regular pools. A few lines (such as Disney) have special pools for the little ones....but not on Princess. We would point out to the OP that most folks do not feel comfy swimming in a toilet or sewer.....and that is what you get with diapers....even swim diapers (which are not full proof).

A few years ago, while we were on the Grand Princess, a family took 2 toddlers (with diapers) into the main pool...despite signs saying no diapers. One of the toddlers had an obvious "accident" and the pools had to be closed for hours for draining, cleaning, and refilling. This deprived the entire ship of the pools on a nice sea day. The family was warned. A few days later they did the same thing...and again the pools were quickly closed (with many angry passengers). The following day that family was escorted off the vessel (at a Caribbean Port) for their sudden journey home!

Those splash areas that are designed for swim diapers, on the ships I mentioned above, are constructed and operated to USPH/CDC requirements. These include a completely separate water system from any other pool, slide, or hot tub, a higher turn-over rate (how often the water is filtered and sent through the chlorination system), and most importantly a UV sterilizer that all of the splash area water must pass through. Operationally, there must be a crew member assigned to monitor the splash area, and shut it down immediately when a fecal accident occurs. Also, per existing regulations, the splash area should not have any standing water where a contamination can linger.

Thanks, Chief. I was about to respond to that post, but you did it ever so much better than I could have. Good info! :D

As much as we love Princess, when we traveled with toddler granddaughters Royal Caribbean was the choice. Those splash areas were wonderful for little ones! We spent many happy hours as the kids frolicked in the water. I can't imagine sea days on Caribbean cruises without taking the kids swimming!

I'm sorry that you might experience some negative feedback from other posters.....

It's not a negative thing to mention the no diapers in the pool, if that's what you mean. It goes beyond a cruiseline's rule...it's more an industry requirement.

But you'll find that even some land public pools will have this restriction because any "accidents" will require the water to be drained/or heavily shocked. It inconveniences everyone who wants to use that pool.

When my girl was taking swimming courses at the local community college, the parents were told to make sure their kids used the restroom right before class. One day we arrived for her lesson and was told that a kid did have an accident so they had to cancel the rest of the classes for the day while they cleaned the pool. The school had to give each student a credit for any future classes at the school...no small expense.

So just make sure any toddlers know ahead of time no pool if still in training (perhaps not go on that deck if you think your child would fuss). Bring a liner along and put it under the bedding on your child's bed.

As far as the toilet, we used a portable ring while our girl was tiny. She loved trying out different toilets. Of course, for the ship bathroom, we took her off the seat before flushing so that wasn't a problem. She was in training mode for her second cruise. By the third cruise, she was out of pullups.

She enjoyed the MDR (she didn't fuss, but we had a system of removing her from any place if she did, so she knew it wasn't benefitting her to do that away from home) and really loved joining in on the waiter parade (her first three cruises were on Carnival). She also enjoyed the shows too.
