Top Shelf Liquor (Cheers)

IMO, frozen drinks are an excuse for a bar to skimp on spirits (also makes the drink so cold that you barely taste anything).

For run that's readily available and not outlandishly expensive, Mount Gay Eclipse or, better still, their Black Barrel is our everyday rum at home. Appleton is also good. Personally, I'd never drink "light" rum, even if recipe calls for it.

BTW, if you order a "painkiller," the classic uses Pussers Rum - not great but, at least, authentic.

If your a rum drinker you MUST try this ! The most smooth wonderful rum we have ever had. We drink it on the rocks or straight up8f70fbc82a79c902946c554cdfc02883.jpg

Thanks everyone. I have had some very bad tequilas and some amazing ones. I think I will know the difference. Just because o do t know names doesn't mean I won't know.

Flatbush are you a bartender or do you just know tour stuff about liquor?

I'm allergic to Tequila, every time I drink it I break out in handcuffs.:')

It also comes down to personal taste also. I'm a martini drinker, so I prefer Bombay Sapphire in my Dirty Martinis. If I'm having a gin and tonic, on a cruise, I go with Tangueray, and at home, the Kirkland brand is fine.

Everybody is into Tito's right now. I didn't care for it. I will stick to Grey Goose for vodka based martinis.

As others have said, I don't drink top shelf in mixed drinks, but that's my personal taste. Others may prefer it.

Flatbush Flyer,

Sounds like I need a trip to the liquor store. The Aviation sounds delish, and I need to try it.

You are the only one to using the term, "abusing the system" if the shoe fits. You can buy a $100 bottle of wine for $50. If everyone were allowed to get $25 glasses of wine included with Cheers, the program would change rather quickly.

You literally stated, "please don't abuse the system." So, I guess there are two (now three) who have tossed that term around.

But you and I were only quoting him/her...therefore I only count that as 1 person throwing it around.

Still baffled why asking for a better etoh in my mixed drinks or wishing better wines were offered by the glass would be "abusing the system".... It's not like I'm getting a drink and handing it off to someone without the package. THAT would be abusing it!

It wasn't the passengers that raised the limit from $10 (or was it $12) to $50. Sounds like Carnival is actually inviting people to move up a shelf or two.

That being said....I am usually against going top shelf and then mixing it with the super-sweet mixers or, with whiskey, even with soda. Not an abuse of the system, but just treating good liquor poorly. :) Take advantage of the ability to go top shelf and drink them in a classic cocktail or just over ice.

But to OP, just ask the bartender, "what's your best brand for this drink?" Sometimes, the most expensive isn't the best for that particular drink. I have never seen a bartender be anything but helpful when asked.

Even though we are more Rum & Coke and Rum & Fruity drinks, that Aviation sounds very tempting and has peeked my iterest. Pease remind me to try one on our TP!:D

Grey goose VX was only at the casino bar. It was around $16 per drink. I also tried a rockstar with this, which came to $22 per drink before tip.

please stop, you are asking for a Cheers price increase or reducing the limit on the top shelf. Putting Red Bull in a $50 bottle of Vodka is a total waste, I guarantee, you could use Absolute and not tell the difference. If you are going to order VX, make it a martini or on the rocks, so you can actually tell the difference

Just make sure they use real "creme de violette" and add it (about 1/4-1/2 tsp) in the poured drink while stirring lightly. The result should look like a storm brewing- just what an "aviator" needs.

Here's the classic recipe:

If you add a cherry, make sure it's a cocktail bing (e.g., a "bada bing" brand) and not that bright red poison. And remember: real lemon juice!

fear not, it was on the rocks, and I indicated I tried it with a rockstar. I assure you carnival will remain in business while I try top shelf drinks that are included in their cheers program. Also, i indicated it was in the casino bar, I assure you the casino earned back the cost difference between VX and Absolute. Every time I get cheers I will maximize my investment and try the most top shelf brands they offer.

No one said anything about Carnival going out of business, however they may rethink the $50 maximum drink cost. It seems some people really just want to feel like they got their monies worth. It's not a contest. I love Bloody Marys, however, I would never order it with $16 a shot vodka, just because it's expensive.

Do they serve this on the ship? If so, which bar would be the best place to get it.
