Pride of America - Flight home worries

How soon can we disembark the POA. My flight home was changed and now it leaves at 10:40am. I was pushing it as it was when it was 11:15.

How far is the airport? Will I make my flight or should I call the airlines and see what they can do?

IMO, way too close. Remember that Honolulu traffic can be worse than Los Angeles. Moreover, you'll have multiple security lines incl Hawaii Ag authorities to clear.

Hopefully, you didn't accept the changed itinerary notice on the airline website message. Instead, call them and ask for "no charge" schedule change. United is really good about making that accommodation. Don't know about others.

The worse part is that I did not even get a notice. I was just checking on the website and saw the change. This is the second change with no notice. I had decent seats picked out for the flight as well. Very frustrating.

Often, you will need to indicate in your online account or flight record that you want to receive notices. Even then, some airlines do screw up. Despite its occasional hiccups, one thing that is great about United and its Star Alliance partners is that they do update passengers on flight changes and IMO (and experience) are terrific when it comes to making needed adjustments.

Well, it's only 25 minutes by cab....if you ask to be first off, book a taxi or ride...flight check in online (and print boarding passes so all you have to do is drop off the luggage)....it can be done but it is sure tight.

On any given day, traffic can easily double that half hour.

Which airline and (new) flight #'s - can you check its on-time performance ? (A new flight and/or equipment change, etc. = no historical data to look at ...)

Being an intra-island flight, there is no immigration/border control or custom to clear, you must do the Self Walkoff & disembark with everything - it is very tight but doable.

Ship is typically docked & cleared by 7 to 7:30 AM and the rush is on for the Express/Self Walkoff & Priority Escort/Haven, etc.

There are plenty of taxi lined up outside waiting and the lines for it, move very quickly - as long as you get outside and into a taxi by 8 AM & no later than 8:15 AM - AM rush traffic, as bad as it is, you should get to HNL A/P in 45 min. to 1 hour. Giving you about 2 hours to first go thru agricultural inspection, then airline baggage & check-in, then TSA security screening.

I can speak for the Pre-Check and your airline's - it will definitely help, you will be sweating until boarded at the gate ...

If you are flying coach, might not have time to buy a pricey fast food meal, airside to bring onto the plane for that 5+ hour nonstop to the mainland (or, settle for a box snack/meal sold by FA onboard)

If the airline can move you to a later flight (it could be an evening/late day departure) ... but, check the flight options & schedule before you call them up, ASAP.

Also, check the recent Roll Call & closest to your sailing dates to see how they did with disembarkation timing & ride out to the airport. Good luck !

Lastly, on that morning, use mobile Apps like FlightStat, FlightAware or Kayak Pro to track your flight and the status of the inbound aircraft ... if it is running behind schedule, then - you can relax a bit & breath somewhat easier as ground services will need time to do the turnaround once it's at the gate.

Hello Salem 615

to answer your question, we have cruise POA 3 times and always were able to disembark at 7h30am.

BUT, we never had weather related problem to delay the ship. We did have one time a medical emergency on board and were told that it would delay our arrival since the ship had to go closer to an island in order to have the passenger taken by small boat and taken to emergency hospital asap. But they made time and we got to port on time. All that to say that i can not tell you if you will make it or not for your flight. Stuff happens. One accident on hawaii highway and you can be stuck for hours waiting. We go to hawaii every year at least once . One out of 4 time ours flight gets delayed, cancel, push back, so my suggestion would be to call airline and ask for a no fee change because of the cruise arrival time. I would also suggest you to push it back 1 day and leave the next day of it is an option. For Hawaii, we never arrive less then 48 hours pre cruise ( 2 years ago our first connection got cancelled, took 4 hours to solve at airport, got into HNL 26 hours later then supposed to ) , and we never leave the day the cruise ends.

Hope this help

Josee.

Thank you everyone.

This is the second change on our United Flight with no notice. I did sign up for notices but got nothing.

I wish we could stay an extra day. Being our flights are scheduled it would probably be costly to try and rebook for another day plus get a hotel. I do see later flights so I am going to call United and see what we can do. I really do not want to chance missing our flight.

Update

I was going to keep our flights but then went on United's website and saw they had a good flight at 1pm. I called and was able to get everything switched over to that flight. Much better connections as well. (Our original flight had a long layover!)

I feel much more comfortable with some wiggle room. Last thing I want to do is be stressed after my trip to Hawaii!

There is no traffic on Saturday morning at ship disembarkation time. The port is near the airport and the flight time mentioned is perfectly fine. Catch a cab.

Remember to have your checked bags scanned at the airport agriculture station just outside the check in area. Then go to check in for your flight.

Excellent! Enjoy a relaxing breakfast, then make your way to the airport. I've always found the Hawaiian airport workers much friendlier than any other US airport I've been in, no matter which island. Still, get PreCheck if you can. Hawaii still has relatively few PreCheck passengers so it can make a big difference. Versus, say, Orlando, where the PreCheck line is often longer than the non-PreCheck line. You should have a decent plane. Oahu tends to get the better planes from United. My flight back from Kauai one time was horrific because they used an older, crappier plane. Crew was extra surly as well. Always had normal planes and crews when flying to/from Oahu and Maui. Even the United Club is a lot friendlier on Oahu than, say, SFO.
