Any suggestions on cruise lines? I want to go to the Southern Caribbean; St. Lucia, Dominica, etc. Not sure how much my husband and son would like sitting at poolside. But the idea of the huge boats is a bit intimidating for a first time and the crowds...

Try looking at RCI Freedom for their southern itinerary.

It's a great ship with lots to do for everyone and great pricing right now for September...we're doing both Sept 8th and 15th. Just amazing ports for either itinerary.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

I know you want recommendations but it really is hard because we don't know you.

So my recommendation is that you speak with a travel agent who specializes in Cruises.

Since Cruise Critic rules forbid us from giving recommendations I would ask friends who you know who cruise if they have a recommendation of a TA for you.

Welcome to CC. It is hard to offer recommendations when we don't know what you and your family enjoy.

Personally like Royal Caribbean. Would recommend any of their larger ships - Voyageur class or larger. They definitely cater to families.

Suggest doing lots of research and finding a travel agent who specializes in cruising to give you some suggestions.

Second the find a TA who specializes in cruises that can walk you through what you like and don't like. Our favorite line is Royal, but we have done HAL and Disney for different reasons. Royal does have the mammoth ships . We did Harmony last year on Spring Break, might give it another chance but it was a very large ship, crowds weren't necessarily an issue just a lot of walking. Our favorite class of Royal ships are the Freedom class. Rock wall, flowrider, ice skating (and shows), casino, promenade and not too big, not too little. We tend to pick the itinerary we would like and then the line/ship. You may find this is a great way to do a family vacation. Our only rule when we travel is we don't get joined at the hip. We all have dinner together so we can learn about what others did. We might invite others to do something with us, but if they say "no" we are cool with that.

Have fun planning :)

If you don’t enjoy sitting by pool, look for a “port intensive” itinerary.
