I need some very specific smoking info for the Getaway

OP...empathize with you. I've arranged cruise details for family, also. My rule of thumb....I can get you the details of the cruise. I can recommend cabins. I can get pricing for the cruise.

But, once we walk on board, everyone is on their own to find bathrooms, cabins, even smoking venues. I'm sure your group will be just find finding smoking areas on their own.

I was on the Getaway Christmas 2015 - with smokers. At that time, there was a section off the Waves pool bar enclosed in glass that you could smoke in - about a dozen or more folks could fit in there with plenty of room. Not as stinky as the cigar lounge, which really would make you want to quit. Stench-o! Also, Waves at night you could smoke at the bar. Next up: Spice H2O on one side of the bar area you could smoke, although, I noted this on Escape also - it depended on time of day and who was bartending. Sometimes they'd have ashtrays on the tables by the bar that's closer to the entrance. At night you could smoke at the bar. Casino has its sections, definitely follow your nose here, it's obvious. Outside on the Sunset Bar on Deck 8 you could also smoke. We only went there at night after dinner, so not sure if different during the day. But, there's some options for you! Assuming most smoke when they drink, they'll be in Spice a lot! Spice is also great when the bar is not open, early in the morning, if you want to have your coffee and relax (and there's a bathroom there, so if anything gets activated, they're closer than going to the room to TCB). :D:pclear.png?emoji-tongue-1703:p:pclear.png?emoji-tongue-1703:-P

They have a cute little plexiglas cubicle on the pool deck on the Breakaway (so I'm guessing the Getaway is similar) right next to the kiddie area that I saw 30 or so pax in there smoking . There are cute little slits on the side for smoke to escape directly toward the kiddie pool

The other side of the cubicle was toward the water but I'm not sure if the smoke could escape that way. I believe it conveniently escaped toward the pool. It was nice to be able to see the people in the cubicle having fun chatting while smoking

The cubicle reminded me of a twilight zone episode. Classic Rod Serling

We jokingly called it "Smoker's Prison". On the Getaway it is located near the adult pool between the bar and performance stage. I did not detect the smoke odor unless I stopped directly in front of the door.

OP, hope this helps:

https://www.ncl.com/faq#smoking

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on their private sun decks.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 USD cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Deck 8 outside the cigar room next to the Sunset Bar is the place to be. It’s where all the smokers hang day and night.

There is also that plexiglass/holding cell area near the pool but I think that’s gross even to the smokers.

I still don't understand why they did those smoking cells

All they need to do is put up 3 sided plexiglass unit with a plexiglass roof and the open side facing out to sea and put them way over in a corner so the smoke goes to sea ...by lets say...

The bar in h2o

The smoking area of the waterfront (imho the entire waterfront is a smokers lounge at this point anyway)

And perhaps some other place on the pool deck but away from the pools

Oh and of course raise the plexiglass rails in the casino so the stench doesn't waif up to 8 and down to 6. Into le bistro and headliners and the atrium like it currently does

As far as I'm concerned all the ncl ship designers since the jewel class are a bunch of sadists and are doing their best to piss off non smokers with this casino and waterfront design for smoking and by allowing smoking in the open air h2o without some sort of smoke barrier.

It also doesn't take a genius to recognize that when the current group of heavy smokers dies off that the smoking areas will diminish (Asian market not withstanding as that is a world unto itself apparently) but as far as the US market and yes even the European market is concerned....well smokers are just not all that plentiful any longer

Yup even in Italy we had zero issues with smokers..even at outdoor cafes...yes it is on a downward trend thankfully

So give it a decade or less and smoking areas will be close to extinct on many cruise lines...where I will be sailing btw thankfully

For those that say it will NEVER happen well just look back 10 years and see what has happened that you swore would never happen...

2 very BIG things come to mind and they have nothing to do with cruising ...I'll let you guess but I'll give you a hint...

One of them everyone laughed off and said..yeah right..it ain't gonna happen but then they woke up that morning with a big surprise in store

The other thing is now widely accepted and legal in most places too and I'm not talking about weed

So yup ...stuff you thought would never happen can..will and does happen. Just sayin

I am also a non smoker, However the original poster asked a simple question! "Where are smoking areas on the ship" so they could tell there fellow cruisers. But instead people insist on making an issue out of a question. Who are these posters really mad at?? It's Just a question about smoking they are not violating your space!!

Quite honestly when their smoke drifts down from the casino to other decks, yes it does violate ones space. Otherwise I have no problem with their smokers cube or other designated areas. I guess I look back at my 23 years of smoking (quit 27 years ago but was diagnosed with COPD last year) and feel sad for those who still smoke. NCL lost a few bucks from me because I did not go into the casino except when we had to go through there disembarking and it still stunk. When I quit I promised myself I would not become a born again non-smoker, but here I am.

I'm really mad at ncl for their poor planning of the smoking areas

Plus

I'm made at posters who claim they will smoke on their balconies...also those who claim to be such high rollers that they can do whatever they want on ncl ships.

Disclaimer: please don't confuse "mad" with anything that will "bother" me. I'm totally aware that those that post they will do these things against ncl rules are the ones with the issues. I'm also totally confident that one day cruise ships will be non smoking.

Thank you everyone for answering my question .. those that did anyway. I really do appreciate the feedback and I think I have enough information to be able to give some options to people. I've been around CC enough to know that these threads tend to get out of hand so even those that are opposed to smoking, I truly do appreciate your restraint. We actually all can get along once in a while :)

No problem! Smokers pay just as much as anyone else to cruise and have the right to smoke. The cruise lines are responsible for making decent places for them to smoke as to not bother others. Unfortunately they fall short with that. I remember on the Getaway the smoke smell would permeate from the casino into surrounding areas. And Chopsticks was right next to the casino so you could and eat amongst the smoke.

Actually, the fact that they have limited places to smoke says that they do not have the right to smoke anywhere.

Again, no. They are confined to the the open decks where they put up with wind and rain.

And Chopsticks was right next to the casino so you could and eat amongst the smoke.

Hmmm,,,, never been any place called Chopsticks

No they don’t have the right to smoke anywhere, I meant that they have the right to smoke since they paid the same amount of money to cruise. They can also smoke indoors in the casino and cigar bar.

I said NCL SHOULD be provided decent places for them so as not to bother no smokers. They don’t do the best job at this. And sorry but I meant Shanghai’s noodle bar, kill me for getting a name wrong.

Just to make it clear though...you are talking about the Haven sundeck not the general pax sundeck

For those that might not realize that

Yes I was talking about the Haven which is why I referenced the original question about smoking area in the Haven.
