Has anyone been to Puerto Vallarta? I want to book an excursion and will need to get to the location by taxi. Is this a safe port to walk around and take a taxi out of town?

Yes, but we went to Las Caletas and left and returned to the port area.

Plenty of people left the port area and got taxis on our sailing.

The Mexican Riviera Board might be of more assistance. https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=203

Puerta Vallarta is wonderful. Go to the old town area, called the El Malecon boardwalk, which is a few miles from the port. The old town is lovely and the people could not be kinder. We go there once a year for a week and take a public bus all around. Always feel safe and charmed by the locals.

Taxis are very cheap and safe. They will happily take US dollars. But the air conditioning is an open window which can be oppressively hot at time.

We spend the whole winter in PV and many of the taxis are newer and they do have air conditioning. As well they are getting all new buses and they also have A/C.

Our best excursion ever was with Ocean Friendly for whale watching. Best ever port on our Panama Canal Cruise. We booked it privately but saw others who booked from ship for twice the price. Check them out on Travelocity .
