Sizzlechest Posted June 10, 2018 #51 Share Posted June 10, 2018 Dumb question but couldn’t people put the wristbands in their pocket like the cards if they wanted? Of course: https://secure.parksandresorts.wdpromedia.com/media/disneyparks/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/vjhdbf9342.jpg People are paranoid and just plain mistaken what this could conceivably be. You're on a cruise. You don't need to carry a wallet. Your room key is like your credit card. Anything that's not free can be charged to your account. It's also part of your ID to get off and back on the ship. Most cruise-goers are going into the water and wearing bathing suits. Yes, you can put a card in your bathing suit, but it's not very convenient if you have to get it out. A magic band is waterproof and always available no matter what the person is wearing. This isn't enough for the cruise lines to switch to them since they will cost more than the RFID cards. Disney gets people to pay money to buy magic bands that have their characters on it. Is Carnival? Not likely.
Computer Nerd Posted June 10, 2018 #52 Share Posted June 10, 2018 I wonder if people could actually get use to it, sorta like wearing an ankle bracelet ;)..You cant leave home without it :D The big G is watching you. There's some kind of spam box that watches our every internet movement just to throw marketing advertisement at us. "Google comes to play" . So I wonder if this is a marketing theme ? If someone feels like they are being watched or tracked, cover the device with aluminum foil so the signal can't get out.
Computer Nerd Posted June 10, 2018 #53 Share Posted June 10, 2018 The type of wristbands people are referring to like the Disney Magic Bands are adjustable and removable. I highly doubt a cruise line would use non removable wristbands like those used for music festivals. Doesn't make then any more comfortable. Disney wristbands and adjustable and removable but they are still uncomfortable to wear.

cajunfla Posted June 10, 2018 #55 Share Posted June 10, 2018 You guys are looking at this all wrong.....it is not a wristband it is an “ocean medallion”. Sent from my iPad using Forums WTH is an ocean medallion?
beachbum53 Posted June 10, 2018 #56 Share Posted June 10, 2018 Not sure i would agree it means more money foe the company, at least initially. What they do is track you ur every movement, time spent there etc. What would be the point of tracking everyone's movement on the ship? There are only so many places a passenger can go to on the ship. And as long as someone didn't need their wristband (or medallion or whatever), it would be very easy for everyone in a family cruising together to hand their wristbands to one person to carry them. That would throw the whole tracking thing way off. The kids could be at the pool, but if their mom or dad had their wristbands while at the casino, it would look like the kids were at the casino too. Gin505 Posted June 10, 2018 #57 Share Posted June 10, 2018 Perhaps not valid to you, but valid to me. Lanyards are removable and are worn by choice. Wristbands are not removable. If they are like Disney yes they are they attach like a bracelet

Maybe most people aren’t getting what the wristbands are. They are rubber bracelets you can easily remove. (Think the lance Armstrong bracelets) they aren’t the paper ones they tape on you like at a concert. They have a chip in them, so just think about it.... And those who think carnival would track your every moment, why in the world would they do that? If you are playing at the casino they already know. A lot of paranoid people here. Djptcp Posted June 10, 2018 #59 Share Posted June 10, 2018 I would hate to have to wear a wristband! I have lovely bracelets and watches to wear and I wouldn't want some ugly wrist band interfering with my jewelry.

It seems several folks just can't fathom what Carnival could do with tracking movement so I will shed some light on possible uses. Carnival can tell if a certain facility is being underutilized and decide to remove it (for better or worse). Carnival can see where most people are hanging out during certain times of the day and adjust or eliminate manning at bars or eating places (such as the Havana bar get utilized very little so they decide to cut manning and open later or close earlier or just close it completely). I'm sure there are several other uses for the data.

If enough people get up and walk out of the theater during those wretched Playlist Production shows, and Carnival takes note of it via the tracking system, maybe, just maybe, they'll bring back good entertainment to the theater. Rare jimbo5544 Posted June 11, 2018 #65 Share Posted June 11, 2018 WTH is an ocean medallion? The name that Carnival corp gave the the device they started to deploy on Princess ships. Royal has started the same thing bit Disney is the true innovator (from a vacation perspective). Sent from my iPhone using Forums

That would if they were all together and tryouts ng to throw the company off (which will not happen). What will happen is that the cruise would then know all movements, especially the people who purchase. Is the ship apace limited? Sure. Do they currently know where people are? No. Would they want to? Absolutely. I can draw many examples but hope these suffice. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

v3cruiser Posted June 11, 2018 #71 Share Posted June 11, 2018 Heard we might switch from sail cards to wrist bands? If yes, when and what ships? I hope never. Wingman2010 Posted June 11, 2018 #74 Share Posted June 11, 2018 Since RCCL is already rolling out these wristbands, there are many posts on that board that offer opinions on their pros and cons. My experience with them on a recent Harmony cruise was mostly positive. Very easy to put on/take off, very handy for use entering your stateroom and gaining admission to show reservations. They can also be used for any purchases on board. Better in most cases than fishing for your card and harder to lose (if worn). The down side was that they couldn't be used to get off and on the ship (still needed card for that) and that most of the bar tenders needed you to take off the bracelet to bring it to the reader. As far as I could see, the bracelet wouldn't provide any more tracking data to the cruise line than your sign/sail card....
ParrotRob Posted June 11, 2018 #75 Share Posted June 11, 2018 As far as I could see, the bracelet wouldn't provide any more tracking data to the cruise line than your sign/sail card.... I think the conspiracy theorists think there are RFID readers all over the ship silently tracking your every movement.
