Plan for San Juan

Hi all!,

We'll be stopping in San Juan one day from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm. Given what I've read from other posts, and given the seemingly short time slot, we plan on just walking around Old San Juan (forts and stuff) and to eat. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Are there any beaches nearby that you'd recommend?

This sounds like a perfect plan for your timeframe...enjoy !!

If you have time, definitely check out the grave yard right before (and next to...at the bottom of the hill) to the fort. It is absolutely amazing!

That would be besides El Morro. If you get to San Cristobal first you can then walk about a mile to El Morro. The entrance to the cemetery will be on your right on a street going downhill just as the fort comes into view. A lot of famous (although most are just locally famous) persons are buried there including actor Raul Julia. But the real treat are the statues on the tombs and some of the elaborate tombs themselves.

Is the fort within walking distance to the cruise pier?

Basically everything in old San Juan is within walking distance. San Cristobal is about 10 minutes from the pier. El Morro is about 20 minutes IF you don't stop to look at any of the sights you'll encounter on the way.

Is there a name for this graveyard? Is it easily found? or needs some searching...thanks, Jill

It’s called the Santa María Magdalena and it’s easily found. Can’t miss it actually if you are going to El Morro fort. :D

That depends on which pier - there are two in SJ, one is right by the old town, the other one is quite a distance away

Since the ship is coming in for a day stop, 7 - 2. It will be docked in Old San Juan. Easy walking to forts.

Do we know this for sure? I thought all of RC ships docked at the other one. Would be nice to be close to the Old Town!!

Royal Caribbean departures from San Juan use Pan American Cruise Terminal. Royal Caribbean port calls in San Juan use Old San Juan. It may be possible that some RC cruise at sometime made a port call using Pan American for some unusual reason, such as too many other ships in port occupying all the Old San Juan berths, but the chance of that happening on your cruise is extremely unlikely.
