Rare ghstudio Posted August 22, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 22, 2018 Can the eclipse run their engines without using heavy (diesel) fuel which has been banned in that area...or has the ban been lifted? Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare cruisestitch Posted August 22, 2018 #2 Share Posted August 22, 2018 I seem to recall that Eclipse was retro-fitted to be able to use other fuel, and also had "scrubbers" added to their exhaust system. Perhaps others can confirm.
mickey89 Posted August 22, 2018 #3 Share Posted August 22, 2018 (edited) Eclipse must be able to use Low Sulphur fuel otherwise it would not be able to enter any UK or EU ports as it is illegal to burn heavy fuel oils in Europe. http://crew-center.com/cruise-ship-captain-faces-one-year-imprisonment-and-200000-euros-fine Edited August 22, 2018 by mickey89
Rare ghstudio Posted August 22, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted August 22, 2018 Thank you both...I found some info on scrubbers being added to celebrity ships...but no ship names. I also found a reference that celebrity ships can power with low sulfur fuels....so great answers to my question Sent from my iPad using Forums
Ian21 Posted August 22, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 22, 2018 I did the behind the scenes on the Eclipse yesterday. They said they carry both types of fuel. In environmental protection areas they burn the low sulphur diesel. When they are allowed they burn the much cheaper heavy fuel. Rare steamboats Posted August 23, 2018 #6 Share Posted August 23, 2018 The Solstice class ships carry both - heavy fuel and MGO. For Antarctica they have to emtpy the heavy fuel tanks completely and are allowed to run on MGO only (international laws). In the Baltic Sea they can carry heavy fuel but have to run on MGO unless they do have functional scrubbers. In 2016 the scrubbers on the Silhouette were built in but not operating yet. So I specifically asked the environmental officer and he confirmed that they were using MGO (marine diesel). steamboats
