noise, vibrations, and odours in cabin

Certain locations can get fuel fumes. Certain locations can get smoking smells. If you open your window/door, you can get a lot of whatever is around.

Some cabins might feel vibrations from engines or noise from locks.

Lower cabins are more likely to get engine noise or vibrations. Usually aft is worse as it is closer to the engines. However, I did Vienna to Basel (Danube, Main, and Rhine) in the most forward and lowest cabin. I got a lot of noise from the bow thrusters which are used to get the ship lined up to enter a lock, of which there are MANY on that route. I was awakened on numerous occasions.

We were on the Scenic Jewel. Our cabin was mid-ship on the middle deck, and we did not have any problems.  However, passengers on the middle and upper decks in aft cabins complained of noise, vibration and engine fumes during the night. Keep in mind, when the ship is in a lock, it is somewhat surrounded by high walls. That seemed to be when their concerns were most frequent.

We were on a Scenic Amsterdam to Budapest 14 day cruise on the top floor, and only a couple of times were bothered by noise above us. Smelled a whiff of diesel once or twice, but not bad over all. Engine noise and vibration is more common when the engine is working hard, and that's more common when sailing against the current. Sailing down stream is smoother, and sometimes almost too fast when trying to take in the scenery (though they do slow down for the most scenic sections). Our cabin was mid-ship; I've heard there are more complaints in the aft section.

We were on Travelmarvel Jewel and Diamond (ship swap), top level, mid-ship.  No noise or vibrations apart from the gentle swish of the water in the river.  No smell or fumes at all.   Just a quiet and relaxing way to travel.

We recently returned from the Douro river cruise with Vantage and were on the Serenity.  Our cabin number was 205 and we noticed the first night that there was an irritating humming noise coming from near our window that started at 6am and lasted until 10pm.  When we lowered the window a bit, the humming stopped, but we were inundated with diesel fumes.  We reported the problem to the front desk and every day we were told they were working on it.  It was still there at the end of the week and it would be interesting to hear if the people who were in the cabin the following week had the same problem or if the ultimately found the problem.
