What exactly is Pirate Night? Does it require anything on the passenger’s part?

Cast members all dressed up, pirate themed menus in dining rooms, pirate themed show with captain Jack Sparrow, fireworks, lots of guests dress up but of course that's optional.

Pirate night occurs on cruises of 3 nights and greater excluding Alaska and northern Europe (where you get a different deck party event).  The Pirate Night Buffet is served in Cabanas immediately following the fireworks.  It consists of way more food than you can possibly eat.  There are meats, other main dishes, desserts, fruit, etc.  Sometimes they have a fresh made crepe station where you specify what you want in/on your crepe from the ingredients available (strawberry, chocolate, pineapple, whipped cream, etc). The only problem is that if you have late dinner, you won't be at all hungry!  You are also welcome to take items from the buffet and carry them to your cabin.

did three day this past weekend

pirate night was Saturday

a packed night

dinner at 545

show beauty and the beast at 815

pirate show and fireworks at 1015

buffet at 1040

as previously commented in case you are still hungry.  goodness it was a lot of food.   Turkey legs like in the parks taco stations baked potato stations desserts

no lines as cabanas has at least 5 sections that repeat so skip the station with the line and move to the next one

the pirate show was ok...  no characters as I'd seen on some videos.  captain jack could have been captain bob

the fireworks were good for no other cruise ships do fireworks that I know of but when you've been in the parks for 6 days prior to the cruise they pale in comparison
