There is a very long history of shipping in Liverpool with maritime museum and tours,

 

Or if you like social history Port Sunlight is very interesting.

 

There are art galleries & museums that you could do on a DIY tour,  some good shopping or local parkland.

You'll dock right in the heart of the city very close to the Albert Dock and Liverpool One shopping and leisure area. From there it's an easy and short walk into the historic city centre. Lovely old buildings, lots of nice restaurants and traditional pubs. See these links:

I can highly recommend BusyBus. 
In 2012 I organized a private tour of North Wales with them. We had 14 people. They were fantastic to deal with. 
I am planning to use them again if when we  are on the Crown Princess 28 day September 10.

That's exactly what I did--except for the rain, I enjoyed wandering around Liverpool as described above.
