How easy going are the Casino’s onboard?

Would love to have a go at Craps but have never played it before. Have a rough idea of what you do but would the croupier point you in the right direction if you are doing things wrong?

We've usually had dealers who were really patient and helpful. They won't outright "help" you make the right bid, but like at Blackjack when my brother-in-law was playing for the first time the dealer would occasionally ask some leading questions like "Are you sure you want to hit?"

They also have lessons and learn to play sessions on board that can be really useful for new players. I've attended a few of those

as craps player i know i have problem explaining it to a new player,  just ask a player for some pointers. craps is a social game anyways.

two biggest tips i can give is

keep on eye on when the dice are getting moved back to the player and keep your hands out of the table once the dice are out, particularly when the shooter is throwing towards your position.

dont say "7" once a point is established, you'll know by the little white puck that says "on"

if the puck is black say it all you want

would not play for first time on ship - the odds on the ship (as opposed to a land based casino) were terrible - only single odds behind the line unless you are betting 25 on pass line, and then only double - no thanks.

I’ve found at both regular land based casinos and ship based casinos if you ask the dealer “what’s the book say I should do?” Or something like that they will often give you fairly sound advice. They want you to win. Players winning = tips (usually). Craps is a fun game. As another poster mentioned the odds on the ship aren’t great compared to land based casinos but it’s a fun time. It’s a social game and when the table is hitting there’s nothing more fun in the casino. Recommend you follow other players bets. Start with the Pass line and toss some small chips out on the various other bets in the middle of the table. If you bet Don’t Pass sometimes you’ll get a side eye from the shooter as you’re betting against them.

Have fun!

Don't Pass line is betting against the shooter, but has slightly better odds.

Slightly off topic, but hope you forgive me...

GF and I were staying at an AI in Cancun during Winter 2018.  They had a play casino (no cash).  So they'd teach you blackjack, allow you to "cheat" (if you made a bad bet, like splitting on the wrong cards and got burned, they'd say "see why you don't want to do that" and let you take a mulligan.).  It was a great way to learn.  And of course you could get more chips anytime.  (The downside is you couldn't actually win anything, but hey...)

GF wanted to learn to play craps, but when we got to the casino, we were told the craps table was "broken".  I'm pretty sure it was a language barrier issue meaning that nobody knew how to run the table because, by gosh, all the legs looked intact and the felt looked fine...

I've told her about the casino classes on our upcoming cruise and she joked "I hope that it's not broken..."

My opinion is just the opposite.  Learn by playing on a ship with $5 minimums.  Harrah's & Hard Rock Tampa seem to always be $15 or $25 minimums.  I am a lot more OK with making mistakes at $5 than $25.

For Craps and Blackjack, look up "Wizard of Odds".

He has a website and several YouTube videos on playing.   He explains each possible bet, and the odds for that bet, and how he recommends to play.

There are also some other videos on methods to play, some of which are very bizarre.  I like Wizard of Odds since his info is based on the mathematical odds, not some hunch or "secret method" of playing.

For Black Jack, you can buy a card that tells you the proper response to any hand you have, to any face up card the dealer has.  The original one was based on over 4 BILLION hands of BJ on a computer. 😄

Most casinos have lessons.  Why not?  If you don't play, they cannot get money from you. 😄

I learned BJ at the Luxor in Vegas.  They had a class with pretend chips.  After the "class" you could continue to play for $2 a hand.  As long as you played, and things did not get too busy, you could play all night for $2 per hand.  And they sell the card I mentioned above, in the gift stores, and even recommend you get one and follow it.  Most people seem to think that they are smarter than the odds.

I love craps and though it can be intimidating to some if you watch the "Wizzard of Odds," videos you will get the hang of it. Here is what I do. I usually place a bet on pass or don't pass (If the table is hot pass, if the the table is cold don't pass) and then odds. I also put a $6 place bet on the 6 and 8 to receive proper odds back. Next to the seven as the number that has the most combinations to being rolled, the 6 and 8 are next. Do not get caught up in the proposition bets like field and hard ways. I am not an expert craps player by any means but after reading several books on playing craps this seemed like the best strategy for me.

I'm an infrequent craps player. No one else in the family plays. Last time i played on harmony came out $200 ahead 😁  Lasts longer than slots.

Sometimes i forget how to bet behind the pass line after the point is made. Some numbers have to be even. So i just ask. Every one has been helpful.
